AFL confirms the upcoming release of video game AFL Evolution for PS4, Xbox One and PC in 2017

FOOTY will return to video game consoles and PCs with confirmation of the upcoming release of AFL Evolution.

AFL Evolution will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (via popular distribution platform Steam) in the first half of 2017.

The game is being developed by Wicked Witch Software in conjunction with licensee Tru Blu Entertainment, who produced the most recent major AFL video game AFL Live 2 in 2013.

Players from all 18 AFL clubs participated in photo shoots for the new game, however in its press release the developers stated that “the best male players” will be featured.

“It’s no secret that the youth market is highly engaged with a variety of digital brands and properties,” AFL general manager of commercial operations Darren Birch said.

“So for some time the AFL has identified a need to create a new video game as another entertainment property for footy fans.

“AFL Evolution will deliver a unique experience for footy fans, taking them to the heart of the action in a virtual footy world.

“The AFL is dedicated to supporting Tru Blu Entertainment and Wicked Witch Software in creating a game that is fun to play for AFL fans and keen gamers alike.”

Fans will also be able to vote for the cover star on the AFL website, with the leading contenders including up-and-coming stars such as Marcus Bontempelli, Isaac Heeney and Tom Lynch.

“We are extremely proud to be releasing another AFL video game,” Tru Blu Entertainment’s Managing Director Sebastian Giompaolo said.

“We have produced a number of games across console, PC and mobile platforms and we’re determined to make AFL Evolution the most enjoyable AFL video game we have released.”

The AFL money is probably the only way they can meet the desired release window. The development time for this will be quite short and the goals are quite ambitious. I'll reserve judgement until they release some gameplay footage.

We have not announced the feature list yet, but some of the big ones are that there is a career mode to play and manage teams, and a pro mode to play as one player through a career, an online fan hub system and dozens of smaller features such as body shapes, tattoos, grubber kicks, handball lobs, and yes, even socks up or down.

So you can play as Shane Edwards then?

AFL Evolution preview: Developers release first in-game footage of upcoming AFL video game

GAMING fans have finally been given a first look at the newest AFL video game with the release of footage from AFL Evolution.

The short video features Richmond running out onto the MCG as we follow the Tigers up the race, onto the ground and through a generic team banner.

The graphics aren’t quite at the standards of big-budget titles such as the FIFA and NBA 2K series, but given the smaller size of the development team for AFL Evolution, that is to be expected.

While the footage is from in the video game, it’s not gameplay footage, meaning fans will need to wait to see exactly how it looks while being played.

On the game’s Facebook page, some fans pointed out that between different camera angles at one point, the Tigers’ shorts changed from black to white and then back again.

Last week saw the release of the cover of the game which sees young guns Marcus Bontempelli, Chad Wingard and Isaac Heeney featured.

AFL Evolution is set for release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (via popular distribution platform Steam) in the first half of 2017.

It is set to feature a career mode, create-a-team and the voice of newly-retired commentary legend Dennis Cometti.
