Cotchin calls on Tigers to lift in AFL

19/12/2016

For all his pride at being awarded an AFL Brownlow Medal, Richmond captain Trent Cotchin admitted to envy.

While he and joint 2012 winner Sam Mitchell have the one Brownlow, the Hawthorn star also has four premierships.

The best Cotchin can muster is three losing elimination finals.

But after plummeting out of the top eight this year, Cotchin is confident that the Tigers will rebound quickly.

Speaking at Tuesday’s Brownlow Medal presentation, Cotchin said the Tigers were regaining their mojo.

“A lot of people comment on the fact that we haven’t been successful,” he said.

“We’ve grown, we improved – we had a really disappointing season (this) year, we’re well aware of that.

“We’ve had fantastic change over the off-season … we feel re-invigorated.

“The energy is there that we probably lacked a little bit last season.

“We’re excited about what (next season) holds for us.”

This season’s on-field disappointment prompted an unsuccessful board challenge and more despair for the long-suffering Tiger army.

Cotchin was blunt when asked about Richmond’s lot.

“For whatever reason, we do seem to find ourselves on the front and back page of the paper, more often than not.

“I don’t think it’s a successful time.”

Richmond lost Brett Deledio to the Giants, while recruiting Dion Prestia from Gold Coast and Josh Caddy from Geelong.

Cotchin remains determined that before he retires, he will have what Mitchell has enjoyed repeatedly.

“You look at the Hawthorns of the world – I know that he (Mitchell) is not there any more – but that’s what I’m striving to do as a football player … especially for Richmond, is win a premiership, let alone four of them,” he said.

Because if you train well, then you're only required to "do your job" and be "the best we've got"
