Soldo to debut? Tigers running low on big men

AFL.com.au
April 3, 2017

RICHMOND could turn to project player Ivan Soldo in Saturday's clash against West Coast after its tall stocks were decimated by injury at the weekend.

The Tigers will likely need to replace tall forward and back-up ruckman Ben Griffiths, who suffered concussion in last Thursday night's win against Collingwood at the MCG.

His replacement would almost certainly have been rookie Mabior Chol, but the talented 20-year-old also suffered concussion in a VFL practice match on Thursday against the Magpies.

Chol was taken from Punt Road Oval on a stretcher after being crunched in a marking contest, later returning to the bench but not taking any further part in the match.

Soldo, who is yet to debut, has hit form at the right time after kicking four goals against the Collingwood VFL team last Thursday, including three in the third term.

He shapes as the most likely replacement for Griffiths because of his ability to support Toby Nankervis in the ruck against the Eagles and compete in attack.

The cousin of ruckman Ivan Maric, Soldo was originally recruited in 2014 as a Category B rookie and took a big step in 2016, playing 15 VFL games.

The Tigers could also call on Todd Elton, who has played four games in his four completed seasons, including the final two games of last season.

Play Hans, what do we have to lose?
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Maybe right but he's better than Mark I.
The club that keeps giving.

It was reported that Soldo kicked 4 goals on the weekend. Even Eagles coach Adam Simpson mentioned it in a press conference.
However the fact is Soldo only kicked a couple.

lol so our tall stocks are decimated after just one injury to an ordinary senior player and a rookie listed player. The situation  is laughable but if we lose injury will probably be trotted out as an excuse.

It is criminal that out tall situation is as bad as it is.The only club who has probably been more negligent when it comes to balanced recruiting is Fremantle like us they knew for yrs on end the tall stocks are thin in numbers and quality and did little about it only when things have become dire have they done a thing.
Thing is they are copping it in the media over their recruiting us we continue to get excuses.

If the op is correct how typical is this of richmond bringing in a ruckman to play as one of the two needed kpf's seems they will never ever learn in this.
Even with Griffiths and Riewoldt both playing  the need was for a third tall for so many obvious reasons.

Personally with Griffiths out why not try Elton as a genuine kpf and bring in Chol to play as a second ruck/fwd. Or if they are keen on Soldo play him as a resting ruck/fwd and bring in the second genuine kpf in Elton or Chol.
Imo Chol outperformed Griffiths quite easily thru the off season and has played some decent footy in the two's both he and Elton could not possibly be worse or more inconsistent than what Griffiths has been.

Most people would agree we are up the creek without a paddle if JR goes down fmd we are hurt when a dud like Griffiths gets hurt but if we just refuse to play the other options we have then we are making a rod for our backs down the track.

Im not saying Moore is ready or will make it at the level but fmd he is the exact type of fwd that we so desperately lack.  Very quick very agile  strong in the air and around that height that allows good movement he is the size of a Gunston McGovern Lynch.

Anyway enough whinging we all knew the dire tall situation well before the season started in fact we have known it for yrs with out a doubt  at some stage it will come back to bite us severly on the arse.

Just one more look at Carlton a lot of their young talls are not killing it atm but they are playing kids like Silvagni Curnow MacCreadie plus weitering they have only been there for a short period but already they are getting just as much out of them as we get out of blokes like Griffiths.
What is the point of hanging onto blokes who have been around for 3  4 5 yrs and we dont play em if they cant come in when the stocks are decimated why have them on the list at all, are they claytons talls that is the talls you have when you dont have any talls.

Yep thats one thing that I was puzzling over in the Blues game.

Carlton are crap and will be for years but at least they are trying to structure up right, KPF and KPD is an area we have been deficient on for many years on the belief that Rance and JR will be around for ever.

Love the headline.
"Tigers running low on big men."

ONE injury to Griffith.

They mention Chol and Soldo as the options, but they're not even on the senior list.
The last choice mentioned is Elton.

Correct. It's sad we are running low after one injury but it's true and the fact the rookies are listed before Elton is because, sadly, they appear to be better credentialed than Elton :lol

Moore should mainly be played in defence - unless we think we really need our own version of John Butcher.....
