We played North at Coburg Oval in 1965, so no issues '65  ;)

The last time I was at Arden St was for an U19s game in the 80s. After each U19s game, the host club would put out food and drinks in their social club for both sides' players and officials (and any kids that were hangers on ;D ). However, Norf fans scoffed all the food before us Richmond folk got there :thumbsdown.

AFLW set to hold one-off overage draft as stop-gap measure (afl site)

AFLW set to hold one-off overage draft as stop-gap measure

Riley Beveridge
womens.afl
20 October 2022

THE AFLW is expected to hold a one-off overage national draft in the coming months as a stop-gap between its shortened seasons.

After completing two campaigns in the space of eight months throughout 2022 to re-align the AFLW fixture, it's understood the next NAB AFLW Draft – expected to fall either in February or March next year – will only consider players 19 years of age or above.

Womens.afl understands clubs were briefed on the upcoming plans to hold an overage national draft this week, due to there being no junior girls season between the last draft held in June and the next scheduled for early 2023.

It means clubs will only be able to pick from mature-aged state league talent from competitions like the VFLW, SANFLW and WAFLW, or young players overlooked during the most recent national draft earlier this year.

It's believed that after next year's overage draft, the League then plans to revert back to a traditional national draft – where the junior season falls more in sync with the AFLW campaign and the majority of the talent pool will be made up of 18-year-olds – from the end of 2023 onwards.

From there, the timing of AFLW trade and draft periods are tipped to fall in line with that of the men's competition and are expected to be held towards the end of each year.

However, the plans have been met by concern from clubs that a compromised draft will limit the short-term ability to trade for rival players at season's end.

Clubs have privately expressed that draft picks will hold less value for 2023, given the restricted access to the best junior talent in the country, and will therefore be more difficult to trade during the player movement window.

A handful of clubs are understood to have since lobbied for the League to consider future trading, mirroring that of the men's competition, as a means of giving them more to play with at the trade table and generating more player movement.

A total of 76 players moved clubs between the 2022 season, which finished in April, and season seven, which began in August. That number considers the expansion sign and trade period, the trade period and delisted free agency.

‘You only have your first season once’: Eilish Sheerin soaking it all in

Alex Catalano
theinnersanctum.com.au
20/10/2022

Richmond’s Eilish Sheerin has had the dream start to her AFLW career. She’s been a standout defender in a strong Richmond team that is finals bound.

Going through her first season at 30, you’d be forgiven for mistaking her as a player brimming with experience. She admits it’s only her third season playing Aussie rules though, still learning game-to-game.

Out on the field though, she doesn’t show it. She’s ranked third in the competition for metres gained, and outright first for intercept possessions.

The New South Welshwoman has been nothing short of a revelation since arriving at Punt Road. This has been particularly noticeable in a defence still without backline general Harriet Cordner, and season six All-Australian squad of 40 member Rebecca Miller.

Speaking to The Inner Sanctum, Sheerin detailed her attitude in approaching her debut season head on.

“This is only my third year playing, so [I’ve approached the season] with a really open mindset,” the defender said.

“I’m just huge on doing what I need to do to improve. Being guided by those experienced players and experienced coaches around me, where they see me needing to focus and improve my game is a huge part of that.

“But then also, just really enjoying the experience. You only get to debut or have your first season once, so really just taking the time to step back and soak it all in and enjoy those moments.

“You never know when it can be taken away from you. So I really appreciate it.”

Her brilliant form has helped the Tigers in their hunt for their first AFLW finals series, which they are now firmly in line for.

With two rounds to go, they sit two games and 54 per cent clear of the ninth-placed Gold Coast Suns – it would take a near disaster to miss from here.

While the club is focused firmly on what it must do in the final two games against GWS and North Melbourne to finish as strongly as possible, the success of the season had made Sheerin’s introduction to the AFLW that much more enjoyable.

“It’s always nice to be in the hunt at this stage of the season,” she said.

“We just have to approach it each game at the time. You try not to focus on outcomes, you trust the method. We learn from the previous week, we build into the next week.

“A big part of our values is growth mindset – how can we improve week on week? If we do that, good things will come.

“Definitely excited about finals and the prospect of being there, but we can’t get too ahead of ourselves.”

Just like last season, Richmond has been one of the most entertaining teams to watch. It has been responsible for some of the closest games each round.

While this started out with two losses to Geelong and Adelaide, it has since turned that around to six wins on the trot, with only two being over a three-goal margin.

This included a stunning victory over the Lions in a scrap at Punt Road. With two weeks to go, the Tigers are still the only team to beat the ladder leaders in season seven.

It has instilled plenty of belief within the group that they can stand up when the going gets tough come finals time.

“Every game we’ve played has a tight game. We’ve definitely learned so much from that,” Sheerin explained.

“A big thing would be composure. [Another] big thing is around belief as well, and also taking your opportunities and recognising when to go fast, and when to play slow.

“I think that kind of knowledge of ourselves and maturity is really important.”

While a big win over Hawthorn and a last quarter breakthrough against Essendon started the streak, one game in particular stood out for Sheerin.

“I think a big one for us was in the game against the Suns,” she said.

“We came from behind and used our workrate and rolled over the top of them. I thought that was a significant growth point for our team.

“Each win and each loss you’re going to learn a little bit. That’s going to build and help us as players.

“We’re doing really well in terms of that, taking those learnings on and making sure they’re helping us deliver in close games.”

Richmond - Maddie Shevlin

In a backline that has had to recraft itself on the run over the past two seasons, Maddie Shevlin has been a constant source of composure and leadership. This season, despite copping an ankle injury that has seen her miss the last two games, the 25-year-old has been playing her best footy yet, averaging a career-high 12.3 disposals at 71.6 per cent efficiency, while also averaging 5.7 intercepts and 328 metres gained. In Richmond's huge win over Brisbane in round five where the backline ultimately was the difference, Shevlin won 24 disposals, 10 intercepts and registered 658 metres gained in an all-time defensive performance.

Others in the mix: Libby Graham, Stella Reid

As the AFLW nears the end of its seventh home-and-away season, the first season with all 18 AFL clubs represented, debate continues to circulate about the improvement in quality of the league, including how expansion has affected the standard.

We dived into the data to see how the standard of play across the competition has changed since the first season in 2017 - examining which areas have improved, and why.

Overall, the data provided by AFLW analyst Gemma Bastiani illustrates greater ball control and improvement of fundamental skills, resulting in distinct game styles and more free-flowing matches, although expansion has disrupted the trajectory of this improvement.

We looked not only at overall standards, but the gap - and there is a gap - between the inaugural eight teams - Carlton, Collingwood, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Western Bulldogs, GWS and Fremantle - and those that have joined since. The league expanded to 10 teams in season three, 14 in season five, and all 18 in season seven.

Given more time in the competition, it stands to reason the foundation teams would be more developed, particularly in areas such as scoring and uncontested possessions.
