Thank goodness it's only a practice match because it looks like the women's team has the same bruise free and play from behind "gameplan" as the men's team this year :help.

Fina Score

Richmond    0.1    2.2     3.2     4.3-27
GWS           0.3    1.4     2.7     6.7-43

Goals: Brennan, Greiser, Jones, ?

Lucky it was only a practice match. The last 1.5 quarters was woeful. No different to our men's team especially over the past 2 weeks. No clear sign of a team structure and ball movement, bruise free, fumbly and error ridden even under no pressure, no defensive accountability or pressure, and too much playing from behind at both ends gifting the opposition easy marks. A lesson in always needing to do the basics well otherwise you can't win any game.

AFLW Tigers go down in Blacktown

By Richmond Media
19 August 2023

Richmond AFLW fell to Greater Western Sydney by 16 points in its final pre-season hit-out on Friday at Blacktown International Sports Park.

The Tigers were competitive until the final term, but couldn't match the Giants' intensity as the hosts ran away with the 6.7 (43) to 4.3 (27) win.

The first quarter was an arm-wrestle which resulted in a low-scoring affair, neither side able to record a major.

Recruit Caitlin Greiser opened proceedings for the Tigers in the second term following a pinpoint pass from Katie Brennan who was hit up by Ellie McKenzie, before the skipper got in on the action with a goal herself.

Richmond was up by four points at the half, and after a handy Emelia Yassir goal, still held a one-point lead at three-quarter time, but the Giants had started to lift their pressure.

Yassir, who played on managed minutes, looked lively for the Tigers, while Monique Conti and Grace Egan were strong contributors through the midfield.

New Tiger Courtney Jones showed her capabilities up forward and found the middle of the big sticks in the final term. But, a four-goal-to-one final quarter proved too costly for Richmond, who was outplayed in the end.

Coach Ryan Ferguson said there would be plenty of takeaways for the Tigers, who would look to "play our game and be more predictable for longer" ahead of Round 1.

"GWS came with a higher intensity than we had this week... it doesn't take much and if you're just off slightly with the intensity and pressure and consistency, then the game can look really different," Ferguson said.

"In patches, we were really good today, but just too inconsistent across the board.

"They were well-connected, hard and tough. And we know we're all those things, so we get to learn some lessons to put into practice in a couple of weeks' time."

Ferguson lauded the efforts of Yassir, in addition to second-year Tiger Amelia Peck, who played down back in her first official hit-out in the Yellow and Black.

"I was quite exciting to see (Yassir) doing her thing," Ferguson said.

"And to see Jess Hosking up forward and on the wing.

"I think we're a much more well-rounded team and much more flexible.

"There's a few things that get to come together and we'll be better for these last two games."

With both of Richmond's pre-season hit-outs now in the books, the Tigers will turn their attention to Round 1 of the 2023 NAB AFLW season, when they'll travel to Brighton Homes Arena to take on Brisbane on Sunday, September 3.

Reckon full forward is going to be a big issue this year unless KB is up there.

Gresier was unable to get separation on her opponent, didnt look capable of taking a contested mark and only got a relatively cheap goal from KB

Season 8 AFLW preview: Richmond

Alyce Collett
womens.afl
August 24, 2023

SEASON 7 was a certainly a momentous one for Richmond.

The Tigers finished fourth and made their debut finals appearance, and despite going out in straight sets it was a huge step forward for those in yellow and black.

However there has been a fair amount of list turnover in the offseason, so the question will be can they maintain that growth and go even further in 2023?

TEAM LIST

#1 Grace Egan
#2 Eilish Sheerin
#3 Katie Brennan
#4 Monique Conti
#5 Courtney Jones
#7 Sarah Hosking
#8 Molly Eastman
#9 Caitlin Greiser
#11 Jess Hosking
#12 Sarah D’Arcy
#13 Meagan Kiely
#14 Poppy Kelly
#15 Rebecca Miller
#16 Laura McClelland
#17 Katelyn Cox
#18 Libby Graham
#19 Kate Dempsey
#20 Beth Lynch
#21 Charley Ryan
#22 Ellie McKenzie
#23 Shelby Knoll
#24 Charli Wicksteed
#25 Stella Reid
#26 Stephanie Williams *
#27 Emelia Yassir
#28 Gabrielle Seymour
#29 Jemima Woods
#31 Lilly Pearce
#35 Maddie Shevlin
#36 Amelia Peck
#37 Tessa Lavey *
#38 Meg Macdonald

* inactive

CHANGES

In: Courtney Jones, Molly Eastman, Caitlin Greiser, Shelby Knoll, Lilly Pearce, Charli Wicksteed, Charley Ryan (back from inactive)

Out: Tessa Lavey (inactive), Stephanie Williams (inactive), Maddy Brancatisano, Kodi Jacques, Sophie Molan, Saraid Taylor, Courtney Wakefield (retired)

FIXTURE

Round 1: vs. Brisbane @ Brighton Homes Arena
Round 2: vs. Adelaide @ Ikon Park
Round 3: vs. GWS @ Blacktown International Sports Park
Round 4: vs. Carlton @ Ikon Park
Round 5: vs. Fremantle @ Ikon Park
Round 6: vs. Gold Coast @ Ikon Park
Round 7: vs. Essendon @ Ikon Park
Round 8: vs. Hawthorn @ Cazalys Stadium
Round 9: vs. Geelong @ Ikon Park
Round 10: vs. Collingwood @ Victoria Park

STRENGTHS

* Broke the finals glass ceiling
* Favourable fixture
* Strong midfield

The Tigers made finals for the first time in Season 7, which is a huge barrier to break through in their development as a club.

They also have a very favourable fixture, with four consecutive games at Ikon Park in the middle of the season and only one of their interstate trips is against a fellow Season 7 finalist. This really does put the possibility of another finals berth in their hands.

You cannot talk about Richmond without talking about its star studded midfield. Led by Monique Conti and joined by the likes of Grace Egan and Ellie McKenzie, it really is the core of Richmond’s success.

QUESTION MARKS

* Effects of high list turnover
* Are they really a top four side?

There are eight new faces in the Richmond line up this season, which is almost a third of its list. Many of their departures were getting regular game time too, so how much of an effect will such a high list turnover have on the side?

The Tigers did make the top four last season but went out in straight sets, so was it just luck of the draw that got them there or are they really a top four side?

BEST & FAIREST CONTENDER

It is tough to go past star midfielder Monique Conti when talking about Best and Fairest contenders.

She finished second in last year’s count and consistently finishes high in the count in other years, and there is no reason to suggest that Conti’s form is going to drop this season.

She also does not have too many team mates that will likely pinch votes from her.

BREAKOUT PLAYER

New Tiger Caitlin Greiser comes across from St Kilda after some up and down seasons but primed to really make an impact in new colours. She is no longer the sole tall target in attack so she will not always take the best defender, and with the likes of Katie Brennan beside her to guide her, this is the perfect opportunity for Greiser to truly show why she was so talked about back in her debut season.

PREDICTION

Richmond took a huge step forward in Season 7, making the finals for the very first time.

Although the Tigers went out in straight sets, this showed that perhaps they are not yet a top four team but during the season they showed they are definitely a finals quality team now.

With a few key additions made Richmond should definitely make finals again in 2023, but with a high list turnover it is unclear if top four is a possibility.

Your club's best 21: Who's in, who's out, who's new

Gemma Bastiani has compiled her predicted starting 21 for each team ahead of the 2023 season

By Gemma Bastiani
afl.com.au
25 August 2023

B: L.Graham, R.Miller

HB: E.Sheerin, M.Shevlin, J.Hosking

C: E.McKenzie, S.Hosking, K.Dempsey

HF: C.Jones, K.Brennan, S.Reid

F: C.Greiser, S.D'Arcy

Foll: G.Seymour, M.Conti, G.Egan

I/C: P.Kelly, K.Cox, B.Lynch, L.McClelland, E.Yassir

Depth: J.Woods, L.Pearce, C.Ryan, C.Wicksteed, A.Peck, M.Kiely, S.Knoll, M.Macdonald, M.Eastman

Richmond's new-look forward line will be built around new recruits Caitlin Greiser and Courtney Jones, with Stella Reid and Katie Brennan both to continue their important roles in attack. Eilish Sheerin will likely continue to start off half back, but push further into the midfield, while the rotation of Mon Conti, Grace Egan, Sarah Hosking and Ellie McKenzie through the middle continues. Gabby Seymour will likely continue as the Tigers' main ruck, with Poppy Kelly in tandem, and the speed of Emelia Yassir and Katelyn Cox will come in handy in the forward half.

Where every club is placed entering season eight

Lauren Wood, Lachlan McKirdy, Callum Dick, Simeon Thomas-Wilson and Eliza Reilly
HeraldSun
August 28, 2023

RICHMOND

Captain: Katie Brennan

Coach: Ryan Ferguson

Ins: Caitlin Greiser (St Kilda), Courtney Jones (Gold Coast), Molly Eastman (Sydney), Shelby Knoll (Pick 24), Lilly Pearce (replacement), Charlie Wicksteed (replacement)

Outs: Kodi Jacques (Essendon), Harriet Cordner (Carlton), Maddy Brancatisano (Gold Coast), Courtney Wakefield (retired), Hannah Burchell, Sophie Molan, Saraid Taylor (delisted)

Last season: 4th (7-2-1)

Star power: Monique Conti was hotly-tipped by AFLW captains to take out this year’s league best-and-fairest award, and rightly so. She remains one of the game’s hottest players and when she’s on, the basketballer is difficult to stop with her speed and touch.

Rising stars: Grace Egan is looking to reinvigorate at Richmond, while ruck Poppy Kelly will be hopeful she can leave her run of injury behind for a real look at what she’s capable of.

Expected finish: 4th-8th
