Although it sounds like she’s only re-signing because there’s 0 chance she’ll make it to the club she wants to get to (Essendon?).

Tiger Emelia Yassir to stay

The AFLW Trade Period has thrown up one final twist 24 hours after concluding, with Richmond youngster Emelia Yassir now set to stay at Punt Road on a one-year contract but with Paige Scott set to nominate for the Telstra AFLW Draft.

Scott had been tipped to return to Essendon after their trade request to Richmond dramatically fell through on Deadline Day, but after further discussions the forward will now chance their arm in Monday night's national draft.

It's tipped that the Tigers will ultimately select Scott at pick No.31 next week, while it's understood there is no animosity between the player and the Bombers despite disappointment at their decision.

Yassir, who was also involved in the failed trade, was considered unlikely to return to Richmond when her bid to get to Essendon collapsed in the final minutes of Wednesday afternoon's deadline.

However, after fresh talks on Thursday morning, it's now expected that Yassir will extend her stay at the Tigers and pen a short-term deal that will see her return to Punt Road through season 2025.

Yassir faced the option of either returning to Richmond or delisting herself and nominating for next Monday night's national draft, where Essendon would have likely called her name at pick No.29.

However, with uncertainty regarding whether she would make it to the Bombers' selection, Yassir is now expected to accept a revised contract offer to play for the Tigers next season.

2024 AFLW Draft preview: Richmond Tigers

Peter Williams
Rookie Me Central
December 14, 2024

RICHMOND caused a stir when it opted to trade two-time All-Australian Eilish Sheerin to the premiers North Melbourne, but regained a first round selection for the 32-year-old and will head to the AFLW Draft with a couple of top 20 picks.

2024 RECORD: 7th, 6-4-1, 131.2% | Eliminated: Elimination Final
2024 PICKS: 10, 18, 31, 56, 59

LIST CHANGES:
IN: Montana Beruldsen (Sydney), Pick 10, Pick 31
OUT: Eilish Sheerin (North Melbourne), Imogen Brown (Sydney), Tamara Luke (retired), Molly Eastman, Courtney Jones, Amelia Peck, Stella Reid, Jemima Woods (delisted)

FIRST PICK:
Pick 10

While Pick 10 will certainly get pushed back a couple of spots due to bids, the Tigers will bring in an elite talent to add to its list. The Tigers might look long and hard at Western Jets star midfielder and Vic Metro MVP Sierra Grieves who will support the likes of Monique Conti and Ellie McKenzie on the inside. She is a natural ball-winner and superb around clearances.

Another consideration might be Oakleigh premiership skipper Sienna Tallariti to provide some rebound out of defence. A future captain of any club she goes to, Tallariti will immediately slot into any back 50 and add composure and sublime footskills to the transitional plays. A taller option could be Eastern Ranges’ Grace Belloni or the upside of ruck/forward/onballer Elli Symonds who are all around the mark.

REMAINING CROP:
Picks 18, 31, 56, 59

Pick 18 guarantees another quality player to walk into the program, and if any of the above were there, they would be strong cases. Belloni might be the most likely, so too Oakleigh midfielder Sarah Poustie or explosive tall midfielder Zoe Hargreaves who boasts similar traits to McKenzie, while being able to play on all three lines. Another option could be the athletic cross-coder Lavinia Cox who has a wide draft range.

Richmond currently has the four list spots, so might only end on 56 – perhaps passing and leaving a spot open for players to train, but will make a minimum third pick at 31. Rebounding defenders Taya Chambers and Esther Schirmer might come into the mix, but it is impossible not to link Holly Egan to Punt Road, with her sister Grace currently on the Tigers’ list.

KEY QUESTIONS:

– Will Richmond look to add another defender or midfielder to the list at Pick 10?

– Could the Egan sisters meet again at AFLW level?

– What will the Tigers do regarding their fourth pick, and would they look at a fifth selection with another list change?

Sarah Black's AFLW Draft preview: Who will your club pick?

AFLW expert Sarah Black looks at some of the top prospects ahead of the AFLW Draft on Monday night

By Sarah Black
afl.com.au
15 Dec 2024

POPPY SCHOLZ
Position: Utility
Height: 179cm
From: South Australia, Glenelg/Mitcham

Sister Matilda's sterling end to the year with Port Adelaide won't have done Scholz's chances any harm. A true utility, Scholz can play in attack, on the wing or (most commonly) as an intercept defender. Excellent overhead and a strong kick. Also a committed elite netballer, which may have a few clubs attaching an asterisk.

Where could she go?
It's looking like the top end for Scholz, but just where she ends up isn't clear. Sydney and Carlton have both been linked – the Blues delisted key back Gen Lawson-Tavan, who played 10 games this year. If Fish goes to the Blues at five, Scholz could slide to Geelong or Richmond at 9/10.

SIERRA GRIEVES
Position: Midfielder
Height: 163cm
From: Victoria, Western Jets/Yarraville Seddon Eagles

In an absolutely stacked draft, it takes a highly impressive carnival to be named player of the national championships. Grieves is a tenacious, well-balanced midfielder. Stands marginally taller than Liv Purcell, and has a similar mix of inside contest work and speed away from the stoppage. Is hungry to improve.

Where could she go?
In any other draft, she'd be in the top three, but it's looking like Grieves could be an absolute steal. The Western Bulldogs love a local girl, but with a new list manager in charge, clubs have been struggling to get a read on what direction they'll go. The Bombers are keen on some speed at eight, while Geelong (nine) and Richmond (10) and the Bombers again at 11 are likely to pounce if available.

ALEXIS GREGOR
Position: Key forward/defender
Height: 181cm
From: Victoria, Bendigo Pioneers/Moama

Has done the hard yards over the past few years, travelling from Echuca to Bendigo for her footy. Last year was a write-off with two bulging discs in her back, but has rebounded well, and built into her season. Strong overhead and in one-on-one marking contests.

Where could she go?
A lot of clubs are keen on Gregor in the 10-20 mark, with Richmond, Fremantle and Geelong all being tied to the Pioneer, more so for her defensive potential than forward prowess.

Paige Scott, Essendon AFLW.
The self-delisting wildcard of the draft, it remains to be seen if the other 17 clubs will allow the dynamic forward to slide to Richmond at 31, having been in negotiations to go to Punt Road in the trade period.

What does each club need and who will they take? Your guide to the AFLW draft

Peter Ryan

December 16, 2024

Richmond

Draft picks: 10, 18, 31, 56, 59, 66, 84, 102, 120, 138

There’s some talk Scholz could get this far, but I think key-position prospect Gregor and brave midfielder Hargreaves are big chances at 10 and 18, while the Tigers will aim for Scott to get through to pick 31.

Big 'Yas' for Richmond as Yassir re-signs

RFC website
16 Dec 2024

Richmond is pleased to announce that midfielder Emelia Yassir has re-signed with the Club for the upcoming AFLW season.

Yassir’s decision to remain at Richmond follows discussions about her future during the AFLW Trade Period.

Despite external interest, and reports of a potential move, Yassir has opted to continue her career at the Tigers.

Richmond Head of Women’s Football Kate Sheahan said it was exciting that Yassir had committed to remaining at the Club.

"The Club never wanted to lose Millzy and when the trade didn’t happen, we continued to work hard to throw our arms around her and show her how much we value her," Sheahan said.

"There’s a lot of love for Millzy in our group and at our Football Club. We see her as a big a part of the future of our program.

"In the end, the relationships built and the love and care that the Club has for Millz is a big part of the reason why she’s going to remain a Tiger."

Yassir has been an exciting player for the Tigers since arriving with pick No. 16 in the 2021 AFLW Draft, kicking 27 goals across 41 career games.

The livewire forward is characterised by her clutch match-defining moments, putting the Tigers ahead in the final moments of the fourth quarter on multiple occasions over the past two seasons.

The 21-year-old was cool, calm and collected during a tense final term against Geelong in Round 7, slotting her third major to give the Tigers the lead with five minutes remaining.

Yassir snatched the lead back for her side in the dying stages during the Opening Round against West Coast, before the Eagles unfortunately responded with one of their own to claim victory.

She was also the match-winner in Round 6 of Season 7 against Gold Coast, helping the Tigers pip the Suns with two minutes remaining as they recorded their fourth win in a row.

Richmond will continue building its 2025 list at tonight's Telstra AFLW Draft.

Sierra Grieves

height: 163cm
D.O.B: 18-05-2006
Leagues: Coates Talent League Girls, AFLW U18 Championships

SNAPSHOT: “A highly contested inside midfielder who can go forward, Grieves is one of those players with a high production floor and few obvious weaknesses”

Sierra Grieves had one of the most illustrious top-age years one could hope for, finishing 2024 as the AFL Women’s Under 18 Championships’ MVP, All-Australian, Vic Metro MVP, Coates Talent League and Rookie Me Central Team of the Year, and Western Jets best and fairest winner just to name a few.

The Western young gun has worked hard to get where she is today, having come through Yarraville Seddon Eagles with the boys and then the girls, before being scouted by the Western Jets in her 13th year. Along with fellow triple bottom-age talent Lou-Lou Field when she trained with the Under 18s side back in 2021, Grieves and Field both played key roles in the Jets’ breakthrough flag of 2022.

Alongside the likes of future draftees Montana Ham, Charlotte Baskaran and Kiera Whiley just to name a few, Grieves was always touted as a player to watch. Like many great champions, Grieves is humble and though quieter than some, let’s her football do the talking.

Grieves has managed 34 games with the Western Jets over the past three seasons, starting as a small forward and moving into an inside midfield role. In that time, she has slotted 25 goals, and averaged 23.5 disposals, 2.6 marks and 6.2 tackles. She is a consummate professional who maximises all her potential to have a high impact at every level she plays.

Grieves has represented Vic Metro the past two seasons, and though due to rotations she was limited to just the one game, she made up for lost time with a ridiculous 2024 campaign. She brought her own ball to averaged 28.3 disposals, 3.3 marks, 4.0 tackles, 6.7 clearances, 4.3 inside 50s and 2.0 rebound 50s, while kicking a couple of goals.

That earned her the aforementioned accolades and elevated her above many of her peers. She might not be the flashiest player around, but she has developed areas of her game to be more than just an inside midfielder, and that has taken her to another level. She has always been a very good player with plenty of weapons on the inside, but this year she showed she has some more strings to her bow.
