Eyecatchers: Who was your club's unheralded star in R5?

Richmond - Ellie McKenzie

There's no wonder why Ellie McKenzie was taken with the No.1 pick in last year's NAB AFLW Draft. She, along with the Tigers, have continued to improve as the season has rolled on and her class and composure was on show in the history-making win against Geelong. McKenzie finished with 16 disposals, five marks and a goal and surely gets a NAB AFLW Rising Star nomination this week. - Chris Correia

Ellie McKenzie - rising star nominee for round 5
« Reply #712 on: March 01, 2021, 06:29:26 PM »
Ellie McKenzie is the joint rising star nominee for this week  :clapping.

---------------

Richmond's Ellie McKenzie and West Coast's Mikayla Bowen's efforts in their clubs' big victories have been recognised as the round five nominees for the award.

McKenzie had an equally crucial role in Richmond's first ever AFLW victory, carving up the GMHBA Stadium turf on her way to 16 disposals and 294m gained.

Selected with pick No.1 in the 2020 NAB AFLW Draft from the Northern Knights and Fitzroy JFC, the 18-year-old has settled nicely into the top level, rotating between the midfield and the forward line.

Against the Cats in the Tigers' historic win, McKenzie found plenty of the footy, kicking a goal, taking five marks and finishing with four inside 50s.

Overdue as McKenzie has been in our bests in every game so far. She must be close to running 2nd in our B&F only behind Conti. She reminds me of a young Cotch in the way she plays.

Most improved players at your club

Richmond - BEC MILLER

The rangy key defender struggled to find her feet at AFLW level last year and was occasionally (and oddly) thrown onto the wing at times. But Miller's confidence is through the roof this year, given the additional support of Harriet Cordner and Sarah D'Arcy, taking on opponents when rebounding and using the ball well. She's averaging 7.8 disposals at 74.4 per cent efficiency, up from 6.7 at 62.5 per cent.

Honourable mentions: Gabby Seymour, Maddy Brancatisano, Hannah Burchell

No change this week.

TEAMS: Roos lose defender, Tigers stick with winning formula

NORTH Melbourne has been forced to make two changes for its NAB AFL Women's round six trip to face Richmond at the Swinburne Centre on Friday night.

Defender Tahni Nestor misses through injury, while Vivien Saad has been rubbed out after the Roos opted not to challenge her one-match ban for a high hit on Carlton's Tayla Harris.

Jasmine Grierson returns after being managed last week and has been included in the Roos' line-up alongside Georgia Hammond.

The Tigers go in unchanged from the side that claimed the club's first ever AFLW victory last week with Christina Bernardi and Laura McClelland emergencies.
