Imogen Brown joins AFLW Tigers

Highlights: https://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/1603076/imogen-brown-highlights

Richmond is delighted to have added explosive midfielder/forward Imogen Brown to its list ahead of the 2024 AFLW season.

Brown joins the Club as a replacement player following Katelyn Cox’s season-ending knee injury.

The 19-year-old joins Richmond via the Sydney Swans Academy and Sydney’s VFLW team.

Brown averaged 13.5 disposals per game this year while playing for the Swans at VFLW level, catching the eye with her speed, running ability, and link-up play.

The dasher also averaged 21 disposals and eight tackles and booted five goals across four matches for Sydney’s Coates League team earlier this year.

Brown was particularly dominant against Gippsland Power, where she racked up 27 disposals and kicked two goals.

The long-time member of the Sydney Swans Academy also represented Australia and New South Wales in Oztag, a form of touch rugby league that fellow tiger Maddie Shevlin also excelled in as a junior.

Richmond AFLW Recruiting Manager Trent Mosbey said that Brown was “quick and explosive” and added that she displays dynamic movement.

“Imogen can accelerate away from congestion and run and carry the ball,” he added.

“She applies high pressure around the ball with her competitive nature, repeat efforts, tackling execution, and defensive pressure.

“Imogen also has very clean hands inside the contest. We believe there is an enormous amount of upside in her game.”

The New South Welshwoman laid 11 tackles for the Allies against Victoria Metro in a recent National Championships match, highlighting her appetite for the contest.

Richmond has had great success with replacement players on the list, with Bethany Lynch, Amelia Peck, and Charli Wicksteed joining the Club through the same mechanism.

Brown will join the Tigers’ football program immediately.

Brennan to continue as Richmond AFLW captain

By Richmond Media

Katie Brennan has been announced as Richmond's AFLW captain for a sixth consecutive season, underlining her impeccable standing within the Club.

The star centre half forward, 31, is now the competition’s longest-serving captain, having held the role in every season since the AFLW’s inception in 2017.

The dual All-Australian showed no signs of slowing down in her eighth season last year, reaching the 50-game milestone and booting her 65th career goal over 52 outings.

Richmond AFLW senior coach Ryan Ferguson lauded Brennan, adding that the team was blessed with incredible depth of leadership that would drive the group forward.

"This group trusts her and will always follow her," Ferguson said.

"She embodies everything this group believes in, she lives and breathes our values.

"She creates genuine and meaningful relationships with all our players. She is consistent, elite, caring, and challenges herself and us."

Brennan will be joined in the leadership group by co-vice captain Gabby Seymour, who has been voted into the role for a second year.

A core member of Richmond's AFLW side since its beginning, Seymour, who was initially added to the list as a cross-code rookie from volleyball via the VFLW program, has gained widespread recognition across the industry for her advocacy work and leadership pushing for women in sport.

Known for her elite behaviours and fierce mindset with the Club, the tall utility has played 45 of a possible 47 games for the AFLW Tigers and has finished in the top three in the Club's AFLW best and fairest on three occasions.

Tessa Lavey has been elevated by her peers into the co-vice-captain role alongside Seymour, a credit to the experienced elite athlete, who did not play a game in 2023 due to a toe injury which put her on the long-term injury list.

The 31-year-old winger took the injury in her stride and still played a pivotal role in the Tigers’ season, including a match day role in football operations.

Rounding out the Tigers' leadership group is Monique Conti and Sarah Hosking, who have been reappointed as leaders for a third and fifth and campaign respectively.

Superstar Conti, 24, winner of the 2023 AFLW league best and fairest, has continued her impressive evolution as a leader. The midfield sensation’s passion for the Club and ability to set elite standards is undeniably evident to those around her.

With eight seasons of experience to her name, Hosking has remained a key driver in cultivating an inclusive environment and fostering training habits.

Brennan said she was "incredibly honoured, proud and humbled" to continue to lead the group.

"I love you all so much. As athletes, I'm your biggest fan, but as people, you're just a hell of a group and we've got a hell of a program. It's going to be our best year yet," Brennan said.

"Gabby has driven our people and program forward, and our football club forward, with just her will and she's always getting better. You see Gabby lift a weight and it inspires you to want to be better by the way that she leads be example, but she's also challenging people and bringing people along with her.

"Tessa didn't step a foot on the field last year, but she had so much influence on our group through training sessions and on game day when she had that headset on. She's an Olympian, she has a wealth of knowledge in what it means to be a professional athlete, and she's just a top person with unbelievable values.

"We're all incredibly proud of Monique's journey, not only as a player and the best in the competition, but as a person and a leader. I've had the group honour of watching her for the last eight years now just grow, and she's growing enormously by the moment. She leads us out on the field week in, week out.

"When I think about the word belonging, I think about Sarah, and how she creates that for all of us, not only players but staff and anyone who walks in our four walls. She's been a real leader."

Richmond 2024 AFLW Leadership Group:

Kate Brennan (captain)

Gabby Seymour (vice-captain)

Tessa Lavey (vice-captain)

Monique Conti

AFLW Tigers tune up in match sim

RFC website
10 Aug 2024

Richmond AFLW put together a successful four quarter hit-out against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday at the Swinburne Centre.

In sunny conditions, the Tigers and the Bulldogs faced off in a competitive match simulation with the hosts coming out on top, the final score reading 10.5 (65) to 4.6 (30).

The Bulldogs got off to a fast start in the first of the 20-minute terms, opening proceedings within the first minute.

But, Richmond soon responded through forward Caitlin Greiser, who cleverly snuck one through from the goal square.

The pressure was on from the get-go, as Bulldogs booted the next two goals, before the Tigers matched them with two of their own.

Exciting ruck recruit Montana McKinnon made an impressive start to her first outing in the Yellow and Black, impacting aerially and showcasing her fierce competitiveness as she slotted a major.

Unfortunately, she came off the ground with a lower limb injury in the second term and did not take any further part in the clash, with further updates to come.

2023 league Best and Fairest winner Monique Conti also showed her craft up forward with a goal, while exhibiting her usual dominance through the middle of the ground with her evasive skills and hard tackling.

As the second quarter got underway, Poppy Kelly gave the hosts the lead with a well-executed set-shot from 35 metres out.

Katie Brennan was all class as the Tigers' crafty captain then dribbled one through. Her strong marking and on-field leadership was on full display through the clash.

With a 10-point buffer at the main break, the Tigers extended their lead in the third quarter through Emelia Yassir, who came on for the second half and was lively, and Stella Reid, who finished the clash with two goals.

Eilish Sheeran provided plenty of grunt through the midfield, working in tandem with Ellie McKenzie, Grace Egan and recruit Ally Dallaway.

The Bulldogs had numerous inside-50 entries during the third term, but key defensive duo Libby Graham and Bec Miller were pillars down back and thwarted the visitors’ attempts.

Ahead by 23 points with one quarter remaining, the Tigers again stretched their lead in the last, with Sheerin and Maddie Shevlin also jumping in on the goal-scoring action.

Speaking to Richmond Media following the clash, Kelly said the Tigers’ clean transition down the ground was particularly pleasing.

"It was really good to get the cobwebs out and get some connection with the team, not going up against each other, going up against an opposition is really nice, you can go a bit harder," Kelly said.

"It was really good out of our stoppages and then some really clean forward entry entries, was really nice to see.

"Our connection's really coming on.

"It was really loud out there., I think we were predictable to each other. A great git-out"

Kelly, reaping the rewards of a strong pre-season, was a standout for the Tigers in the ruck and backline.

"I had a really big pre-season, I don't really feel like I had much of an off season. I worked a lot with (Shaun Hampson) on my aerial contest work and I think that's really helped me coming into the season," she said.

The Tigers final pre-season challenge will be an official practice match against Brisbane next Friday, August 16 from 7.15pm.

A live stream with commentary of the practice match will also be available.

"There's a bit of a rivalry there. We love coming up against them. It will be a hard game, it will be hot as well," Kelly said.

"It'll be a really good hit out.

"We love travelling. I think we play our best footy often when we're travelling and it's good to be around each other. We just love hanging out together."

Why Tigers have 'that edge', star set for new role

The Tigers are looking to get back on track this year after injuries ruined their 2023 season

By Sarah Black
afl.com.au
13 August 2024

SETTING The Scene is a pre-season series ahead of the 2024 NAB AFLW season, which starts on August 30. Picking up on storylines from last year's season, which ended in a second premiership for Brisbane, the series will also take a more holistic look at what is involved in a pre-season.

After finishing the home and away portion of season seven in fourth spot, Richmond featured in a maiden finals series. The Tigers then crashed out of the top eight last year on the back of a lengthy injury list. What can you take out of an injury-decimated season?

THERE were moments last season where Richmond coach Ryan Ferguson and his match committee were seriously struggling to pull together a team of 21 players.

There was no clear pattern to the injuries, which were coming thick and fast. Bone breaks, impact injuries during games, concussions, soft-tissue tears, even a case of glandular fever.

If clubs dip below 23 available players (a team of 21 and two emergencies), they can select from their "top-up players", a group of 10 state leaguers who train alongside the main group once a week.

Shannon Danckert and Lauren Caruso were named in the side or as emergencies on a collective six occasions.

With no consistency in their 21, the Tigers slid down the ladder, missing finals.

"We got a lot out of it, a lot of learning, a lot of growth. I honestly feel like our game has significantly improved, but obviously we weren't able to play it consistently enough," coach Ryan Ferguson told AFL.com.au.

"We found a lot from positional adjustments and flexibility. Gab Seymour gets to play as a key defender. Jem Woods plays a chunk of games and plays multiple positions and (Charli) Wicksteed plays a chunk of games, plays forward as well.

"More significantly, we didn't get what we wanted. So the players have that edge about them. Well, we rose to the challenge in many ways, but the fact is, doesn't matter what the challenges were, we didn't get what we wanted, so how do we go about making sure that we do rectify that this season?

"I think many teams are going to going to be faced with that outlook this season, where it's going to be a challenging season (with mid-week footy), and you've got to make sure that you're flexible, you're able to adapt to what you got, you use your whole list, it is going to take a whole list.

"We've got practice in that, we know what that looks like. We think we could have been better. Although there were many times where we rose to the occasion, there were times where we weren't good enough across quarters or games."

Richmond saved its best footy last year for a final-round rout of Collingwood, highlighted by a starring role by All-Australian defender Eilish Sheerin through the midfield.

It's an experiment that's likely to be repeated in the upcoming season, with Sheerin set to line up alongside reigning AFLW best and fairest Monique Conti, returning No.1 draftee Ellie McKenzie, Sarah Hosking, Grace Egan and recruit Ally Dallaway.

"She's been training there a bit all season, and we're excited by that. In an ideal world, I think we can add some real power to our midfield and add a layer that will complement the other mids, and will be tough for other teams to come up against.

"We always felt a bit hamstrung, especially around availability. Nearly every match committee we talked about it, but the hole it was going to leave in our defence and the rebound, we just didn't feel like we had the players to cover it. Whereas with time to train up, we feel like hopefully that'll work for us this season."

Speaking to Ferguson before star recruit Montana McKinnon ruptured her ACL, the Tigers coach was buzzing about the impact of his new players, including Giants pair Dallaway and Jodie Hicks.

"The exciting thing about those three is that their characters have already added to the group, their workrate, how well they bounce off their teammates," he said.

"They haven't played a game, but we're better for having them. But obviously the excitement around what they can do on game day – Hicksy's ability to see the game, competitiveness, to fight, defend well and rebound fast, Dallaway's work and shape around the ball and the ability to make others better around her as well."

In terms of climbing back into the top eight, it's all about that midfield-forward connection for Richmond, which was shaky last year after the retirement of marking target Courtney Wakefield.

"We need to play our game more consistently. Specifically, I think we were a bit leaky in terms of our front-half game, the year before we were quite strong. Whereas we had trouble getting it forward, keeping the pressure on, and creating re-entries and creating scores from pressure," Ferguson said.

"So we need to make sure that we're done a lot of work on getting ascendancy in the game, getting a number of inside 50s and repeat entries and forward half territories. That's important.

"We saw a bit of play in the Collingwood game, in the second half of the Hawthorn game – being able to create and explode in attack and advance our methods. We've got it all, but just understand our methods of attack a little bit.

"I know the players are really pumped about advancing our game with our attacking side, but off the back of a really strong defensive mindset, strong contest and balance and contest game, so we've got a really good balance across the three lines."

Just to confirm
And this isn’t baiting

Is it against site rules to point out players that turn up unfit?

We would do it for the blokes 100%

Hopefully the girls turn up ready to rip
