The Barometer - Round 20

Herald-Sun
31 July 2017

RICHMOND

ON THE BLOCK:
Shai Bolton and Dan Butler were both quiet but the Tigers don’t want to mess with their small forward brigade. Will they persist with two rucks when Jack Riewoldt returns?

ON THE CUSP:
Riewoldt is expected to play after he missing the win against the Suns with a nasty eye injury. The star forward needed surgery following a poke in the eye at training. Dion Prestia’s return date is less certain as he battles Achilles tightness. Jayden Short had 27 touches in the VFL after being dropped and Ben Lennon keeps kicking goals in the magoos but the standout was draftee Jack Graham who had 33 disposals in the win against North Ballarat.

AL PATON’S FORECAST:
Far from a polished performance at Metricon but the Tigers are finally ahead in their head-to-head ledger against the Suns and they keep winning, which is the most important thing. If the Saints had held on for 14 more seconds a top-four spot would be almost in the bag, as it is it’s Richmond’s to lose but the next two weeks are massive. The reborn Hawks are next up followed by a trip to the Cattery. Win one of those and the Tiger train will be heading for September at full steam, drop both and all of a sudden they are back in the mix for fifth-10th.

You want to "run them off their legs" yet drop Bolton for slower players?

In the Mix - Round 20

RICHMOND

Key forward Jack Riewoldt is expected to find out on Thursday morning if he will be available for Sunday's clash against Hawthorn as he recovers from an eye injury. Riewoldt was a surprise omission against Gold Coast in round 19 after requiring several stitches in his right eye following a training mishap. His fate is in the hands of doctors, but the Tigers would be desperate to add the star goalkicker to an undersized forward line.

Midfielder Dion Prestia is expected to be available after he was rested for one match with knee and calf soreness.

In the VFL, half-back Jayden Short pushed his case for an immediate recall with 25 possessions, six rebound 50s and a goal.

Ben Lennon booted three goals and, if Riewoldt is unavailable, remains a medium-sized option in a forward line lacking height.

Tyson Stengle also booted three goals.

Butler didn't seem to do much against the Suns but he has kicked 3 goals recently against Port and Brisbane.

I wouldn't drop any of the 3 main Amigoes now - you never know which one of them is going to fire up and they have been a major reason why we sit in the top four after round 20.

We only need three small fwds.
Bring in JR, Moore and Lennon

This is not a slow fwd half
Bolton - Moore - Nankervis
Lasagna - Riewldt - Rioli.
4 exceptionally quick players  Rioli, Lasagna, Bolton  and possibly the quickest of them all moore with the added bonus of being a genuine tall and strong in the air. Why we are not throwing this guy into the deep end is beyond me.

Int Lennon - when Toby rucks Lennon goes fwd but rather than play him as a fwd Lennon is selected as a mid.
Ruck Soldo - not impressed so far but happy to keep putting games into him

Both are soft average footballers but let's be honest they aren't going anywhere unless injured or suspended. One can only hope.

Will Jack be back? Tigers left waiting

RICHMOND does not expect to know if Jack Riewoldt will be available for Sunday's clash against Hawthorn at the MCG until Thursday morning as he recovers from eye surgery.

Riewoldt's fate will be left in the hands of doctors after a knock at training last week led to a cut in the cornea of his right eye, requiring several stitches.

The star forward missed Saturday night's win against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium and could be sidelined for a second week if he is not given the green light by doctors.

Coach Damien Hardwick was confident Riewoldt would return to face the Hawks when asked about the vice-captain's fitness on Saturday night.

"We look forward to welcoming him back next week, it should only be a one-week injury. It'll be handy to get him back against the Hawks," the coach said.

Riewoldt could be one of two key inclusions for the Tigers, with midfielder Dion Prestia expected to return after he was rested for one match because of knee and calf soreness.

bah, Lennon found his niche, VFL.  Tarzan grip Arseberry would be a better forward option than him, he would take marks, not shirk contact.  Lennon is soft as a freshly laid, but well formed stool.
