Serious question- how strong is the VFL competition these days  ??

Seems like there are some pretty ordinary teams atm .

Didn't they get rolled by the WAFL this year  ??

The Barometer - Round 23

Herald-Sun
21 August 2017

RICHMOND

ON THE BLOCK: Are you serious? Jacob Townsend was a surprise selection against the Dockers and would ordinarily be first out, but six goals changes that. First-gamer Jack Graham laid 11 tackles and Oleg Markov was also good. The one player who could be on thin ice is Jason Castagna, who had just one kick against Fremantle and has been quiet for a few weeks. But his speed is important.

ON THE CUSP: Sam Lloyd picked a bad week to gather a mammoth 50 disposals and four goals in the VFL. Anthony Miles chimed in with 45 of his own in a big win against Sandringham.

AL PATON’S FORECAST: Are the planets aligning for the Tigers? One the same day they put Fremantle to the sword Ben Griffiths and Reece Conca made successful returns in the VFL, giving Damien Hardwick almost a full list to pick from going into finals — now guaranteed, which is an effort in itself. But the Tigers still need to win on Sunday to lock in the double chance and they won’t need reminding that last time they faced St Kilda was a debacle. Playing at the MCG should help.

(Cotchin terrible again & on notice)

Go watch the second quarter again when we started getting on top...was in no small measure due to him... :shh
:lol
The second quarter was due to freo defensive structure going to crap and being totally non existent.

I'm a fan of Trent as an elite player that's why I won't accept substandard performances from him especially as captain.
As an elite player and a Brownlow medalist it's not acceptable to have these types of games and I don't care who it's against.

50% disposal efficiency - not good enough.
2 possessions first quarter - not good enough.
1 tackle in 4 quarters of footy - not good enough.
1 centre clearance - not good enough.

We can all bang on about soft hacks like Houli, B Ellis and helicopter man but I don't expect much from them and these blokes aren't going to ever win a final for the team and you know what your getting from them and I'll never expect more (but extremely surprised if they do).
But from an elite performer I expect much much better than what he's dishing out the last two weeks coming into a finals series where he has failed more time than he has reached the proper standard.
Cotchin isn't a young player trying to make his way. He's a Brownlow medalist! An elite player in the AFL and needs to be judged accordingly.

Think about it and be honest, if Grigg had the same numbers as Cotchin would you be screaming for him to be dropped?

I judge our captain with the standard he has set himself by his elite performances in his career and by what feats he has achieved on the footy field and that's why I expect more from him and won't accept substandard below par performances. That's why he should be judged harsher than the lesser players because he is better.
Facts are we are going to need him at his best come finals and hopefully we don't see a repeat of EF 2014/2015. These types of performances might be acceptable to you but not to me especially when your a Brownlow medalist, an elite midfielder of the afl, a club captain and haven't yet won a final.

Just have a gut feel that a Tiger will get reported this week and it could just be Cotch, looked very frustrated against Freo.

Given the importance of the game against St. Kilda resting players is not an option. Nor should underdone players such as Hampson, Conca and Griffiths be rushed into the team. Miles and if fit Caddy should be considered but at whose expense is the critical question.

Agree, there is no way id bring in Conca, Griff or Hampson.

We need a match hardened side in this week. I'd only consider bringing in Miles but dont know for who. I wouldnt drop castagna, Markov, Graham or any other kid. Grigg was back to 1st half of the season form which was very respectable so wouldnt drop him either. and we know houli doesnt get dropped for poo performances let alone when he has had a reasonable game, so hes not going anywhere.

I'd be tempted to bring Conca in for someone this week. If he found his early season form he'd be worth it imo.

What?
The guy has had a long lay off and has played one game at VFL level. He was poor too with many turnovers. Needs to show a hell of a lot more if he is to force his way into the side....
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.

If its not this week then he doesn't play finals. That's why I'm tempted.
