VFL Tigers secure fifth spot

richmondfc.com.au
27 August 2017

Richmond VFL 17.17-119 def Coburg 4.9-33

The VFL Tigers capped off the 2017 home and away season in emphatic form, putting Coburg to the sword by 86 points on Sunday.

In blustery conditions at the Swinburne Centre, Coburg came out all guns firing in the opening quarter, taking the lead by four points at the first break.

The VFL Tigers recovered well to dominate the second quarter, and barely looked back as they stormed home to a commanding victory.

Richmond development coach Xavier Clarke said his side recovered well from the early pressure of the visitors to notch up another dominant victory at the Club’s Punt Road Oval headquarters.

“Full credit to Coburg today, at quarter time there was only a goal in it,” Clarke said.

“They bought the heat and some pressure early on, so for us it was a very workman-like win.

“To be able to get to the contest first, get the ball forward and get goals on the scoreboard is always pleasing.”

With Sunday’s weather conditions changing on the hour, it was difficult for either side to gain the ascendancy, with Coburg’s inaccuracy helping the Tigers in the first quarter.

Their return of one goal and seven behinds in the opening stanza reflected the difficulty presented in the tumultuous conditions, with both sides struggling to adapt.

After a rare entry inside 50, Brandon Wood nailed the first of the day, however a quick return from the Coburg’s Liam Hunt had the sides almost inseparable by the first break.

However, with the wind at their backs in the second stanza, the VFL Tigers took the contest by the scruff of the neck and put clear daylight between themselves and the travelers.

Quick-fire majors to Ben Lennon and Shai Bolton provided some much needed breathing space, before Wood’s second put all the momentum in the Tigers corner.

Lennon added one more before Jake Aarts nailed his first, before unlikely hero Daniel Coffield nailed his first goal of the season with a thumping effort from outside 50.

With a 36-point lead in tow at half-time, the Tigers were feeling confident, and as the wild conditions died down, they began to show the style of football that has seen them bolster fifth position on the ladder.

Ben Griffiths nailed his first major since his initial return from injury against Werribee, snapping cleverly out of a tight situation in the forward pocket, much to the delight of the onlooking Tiger fans.

Fellow returning forward Steve Morris then added his name to the ever-growing list of goalkickers, before Aart’s second extended the lead to 50 points in the shadows of three quarter time.

Captain Sam Darley was in inspired form, displaying precise delivery and excellent vision as he provided quality ball use off half-back.

On the opposing flank, Jayden Short was using his explosive pace and versatility to good use, rebounding with great effect and combining well with the hard-working midfield group.

With the match all but over by the final quarter, the VFL Tigers knuckled down and maintained the intensity until the final siren, adding four more goals to put the cherry on top of a rousing victory.

Ivan Soldo, who had combined well in the ruck with Shaun Hampson for a collective total of 60 hitouts, moved forward to add two goals to his impressive performance, while Tom Silvestro was also given reward for his relentless pressure when he kicked truly from close range.

With the win securing fifth position on the ladder in the final round of the home-and-away season, the VFL Tigers will face Collingwood in a bumper elimination final clash next weekend.

Development and VFL midfield coach, Xavier Clarke's summary of the AFL-listed players from Sunday’s Round 19 VFL win over Coburg.

Anthony Miles

28 disposals, nine clearances, seven marks, six tackles.

Continued to show his dominance at VFL level. Worked really hard throughout the midfield and set us up around the ground. Had very good first use through the major impact in the ruck of (Shaun) Hampson and (Ivan) Soldo.

Sam Lloyd

23 disposals, eight contested possessions, six marks, one goal two behinds.

Pretty hard for him to back up 48 disposals from the week before, but he was still influential with 23 touches. Hit the scoreboard only once, but spent more time in the midfield. Used the ball really well when he got his hands on it.

Corey Ellis

22 disposals, seven tackles, six marks, four rebound-50s.

Has been excellent in the past two games. Played more across half-back, but spent the last quarter through the midfield. His ball use, in and around congestion, is a real feature of his game at the moment. Is starting to work really hard in contests. Finished the match with seven tackles, which underlined his work-rate.

Jayden Short

20 disposals, nine contested possessions, four marks, four inside-50s.

Spent a bit more time on the wing, which was pleasing to see. Was strong at the contest, consistently broke through the lines, and capped off his work with quality ball use. Is showing some impressive consistency at the moment. Will be pressing for senior selection in the coming weeks.

Shai Bolton

19 disposals, nine tackles, four marks, five inside-50s, one goal one behind.

Was fantastic. Started forward and then was on the wing at times. Really broke the game open with his run-and-carry and his forward pressure was outstanding, leading to several goals for the team. It’s something he’s been very good with over the past few weeks.

Reece Conca

18 disposals, four marks, four rebound-50s, three tackles.

Played more game time in his second match back from long-term injury. Started down back and then had a few stints through the midfield. Is starting to build some confidence in his body. With another game under his belt this weekend, I think we’ll start to see him really take the game on.

Ben Lennon

17 disposals, ten marks, four inside-50s, three goals two behinds.

Was again dangerous in the forward line. Worked hard, marked strongly and finished with three goals.

Steven Morris

15 disposals, six tackles, five inside-50s, one goal.

We love having him in the side. With his pressure, his leadership, the way he attacks the footy and the way he sets up the team, he’s been absolutely sensational for the young players in the forward line and throughout our VFL program.

Ben Griffiths

12 disposals, six marks, four inside-50s, two goals one behind.

Really good in his second game back from a shoulder injury. Started to work his way into the contest and is getting good confidence back into his body. Kicked two goals and he’ll benefit from another game under his belt this week.

Callum Moore

12 disposals, three rebound-50s, two score assists, one goal.

Continued to play his role well. Ended up on the wing during the last quarter, which was really exciting. Showcased his impressive pace and used the ball efficiently in another encouraging display.

Ivan Soldo

21 hitouts, 12 disposals, four marks, four tackles, three score assists, two goals.

Was strong at the centre-square bounces with 21 hit-outs, in his first game back at VFL level for a few weeks. Went forward, kicked two goals and looked dangerous. His spread from contest was a highlight of the game for me.

Todd Elton

Nine disposals, five marks, three inside-50s.

His aerial contest power is starting to be a key feature of his game for us, whether that’s taking contested marks, or bringing the ball to ground. He’ll continue to be a strong contributor for us.

Shaun Hampson

41 hitouts, seven disposals, three marks, four tackles, two clearances.

Although he had only seven disposals in his third game back from long-term injury, he finished with 41 hit-outs out of our team total of 64, which was very impressive. Looked really good at the centre-square bounces. Is getting his leap back and the marking contest component of his game is starting to return as well. And it was pleasing to see him push forward. Could have finished the match with a couple of goals, but ended up with two behinds. With another game under his belt, could be pushing strongly for senior selection.

Ryan Garthwaite

Seven disposals, two tackles.

Continues to have a crack every game. Plays his game well and rarely gets beaten in one-on-one contests. Didn’t get rewarded with a lot of the footy, but what he does off the ball, and through his work-rate, it’s really pleasing to see.

Mabior Chol

Six disposals, two marks, two rebound-50s.

Looked exciting at times, when he took the game on. Over-ran the footy at one stage, but when he’s confident, backs himself in, and is strong in the contest, that’s what we like seeing from him. Hopefully he can maintain that form.

It will be worse after he comes in, we lose, he has his usual two possessions game with no tackles and great tap work to the opposition and misses a goal from four metres out.

Just thinking about it I better see one of the docs on here for blood pressure tablets
