RIP Drew Morphett
« on: August 26, 2017, 10:31:07 AM »
We have lost one of the greats of footy calling last night when the legendary Drew Morphett passed away at just 69 years of age. He was watching the Hawthorn vs WB game when he died.

One of the best footy callers ever and hosted one of the best footy shows in "the Winners".

Condolences to the Morphett family and friends.

There are many childhood memories listening to Drew's fantastic calling of games. Makes most of today's callers sound terrible.

Not sure if he was ill. That information hasn't come out as yet.

Could I get a doctors advice on what the issue was

I'm sure a real doctor would have heard in doctors circles what was happening

Remember growing up with Morphett calling the '95 final v Essendon. That game was replayed a lot in our household...

Sorry that you felt my question was inappropriate. I didn't realise he was 69. I only asked if he was ill because it seemed very sudden. Drew Morphett always seemed to be young compared to the other commentators (he certainly looked much younger).

The last I had heard of Drew Morphett was when he was let go by the ABC for cricket commentary. I felt bad for him at the time because while he remained professional to the end, it was clear in his voice and comments that he didn't want to go. And pretty much for a long time, he was the only footy commentator I knew of due to living interstate in a Rugby state and relying on the Winners for a weekly footy fix.

Unfortunately I don't live in Victoria and sometimes news doesn't always seem to filter out.

It wouldn't be the first time that a notable person has passed away and I only found out later that they had been ill. If you see my question being a morbid fascination or similar so be it.

I actually think it is a rather human response to trying to make sense of a situation that might be a surprise/shock. You will be pleased to know that Foxsports are reporting that it is not believed he was unwell. I hope it was natural and peaceful, as I would for anyone, even yourself.

Not my favourite commentator of all time but his voice was an institution of footy in the eighties.

Respect to him for a life well lived and condolences to his family.

Well said and I totally agree. He annoyed me as a commentator but his legacy cannot be denied
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Brad Hardy said he smsd him that night and he was drinking sherry and they were going to call a game on Sunday. So I don't think he was ill or so I'll he couldn't work.
