SUMMARY

These two teams have played each other in the season opener every year since 2007, with the exception of 2014, for five wins each. However, the Tigers own the form side of this equation, having won the last six head-to-heads (including return matches outside of round one), and will enter this one as not only premiers but raging favourites. They'll be missing a few premiership players with Daniel Rioli (foot) and Nathan Broad (suspended) out while Bachar Houli (calf) and Dion Prestia (hamstring) have had limited pre-seasons. The Blues are without defenders Sam Docherty and Sam Rowe plus Jarrod Pickett (wrist) but have been buoyed by the late pre-season form of Jacob Weitering, who is expected to be stationed down back this season, while recruits Paddy Dow and Matthew Kennedy plus Patrick Cripps impressed in the Blues' two pre-season wins.

WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Thursday, March 22, 7.25pm AEDT

LAST FIVE MEETINGS
R14, 2017, Richmond 11.18 (84) d Carlton 8.10 (58) at the MCG
R1, 2017, Richmond 20.12 (132) d Carlton 14.5 (89) at the MCG
R1, 2016, Richmond 14.8 (92) d Carlton 12.11 (83) at the MCG
R15, 2015, Richmond 10.11 (71) d Carlton 5.11 (41) at the MCG
R1, 2015, Richmond 15.15 (105) d Carlton 11.12 (78) at the MCG

THE SIX POINTS

1. Can the Brownlow medallist pick up where he left off? Dustin Martin was the difference between the sides in the Tigers' two wins over the Blues last season with 33 disposals and four goals in round one, and 30 touches in round 14.

2. It's going to be a tough ask to penetrate the premiers' backline. The Tigers had one of the best defences in 2017, conceding an average of just 74 points per game and only twice allowing their opposition to put 100-plus points past them.

3. It won't help the Blues that they struggled offensively last season, with an average of just 72 points scored against – the worst in the competition.

4. If you want to get superstitious about it, the Tigers have the edge here too. Over the last decade, the reigning premiers have won their opening game of the following season seven times.

5. The Blues also have struggled to beat the Tigers in recent times, having last lodged a win against them in the elimination final of 2013.

6. He might have won everything else last year, but Dustin Martin had to settle for second place in the Official AFL Player Ratings. Martin polled a total of 666.6 points for the season to finish behind Patrick Dangerfield, who racked up 727.3.

IT’S A BIG WEEK FOR …

With no Broad and possibly no Houli, Brandon Ellis could be faced with increased responsibility across half-back where he'll need to play a more accountable role to make up for the absence of his premiership teammates.

PREDICTION: Richmond by 29 points.

Tiger Army to unite for flag march

richmond.com.au
20 March 2018

Richmond will honour the mighty Tiger Army, by inviting members and supporters to march with the premiership flag ahead of the flag raising ceremony at the MCG on Thursday night.

The Tigers will unfurl the premiership flag for the first time in 37 years, ahead of its Round 1 blockbuster with Carlton at the MCG.

Grateful for the loyal and passionate support from the Tiger Army, Richmond is inviting members and supporters to assist in the delivery of the 2017 premiership flag to the MCG.

Fans can participate in a march with the flag from the Club’s home at the Swinburne Centre, Punt Road Oval, to its spiritual home, the MCG at 6pm on Thursday evening.

Richmond has selected 11 special members as flag-bearers, to represent the Club’s members and supporter base, and each of Richmond’s 11 premierships. The flag-bearers will transport the flag from Punt Road Oval to the MCG.

Once inside the MCG, the flag will be carried down through the crowd at the Punt Road End, through the Richmond Cheer Squad, and complete a lap around the MCG arena with the flag-bearers.

Richmond President, Peggy O’Neal will receive the flag, deliver a short speech to the fans at the MCG, and raise the flag on behalf of the Club, players and the Tiger Army.

“After a lot of discussion and ideas for the flag unfurling, ultimately we wanted to reward the loyal and passionate people who have been with us on our journey, and that’s the Tiger Army,” Richmond CEO, Brendon Gale said.

“We have built a wonderful connection with our fans, and we see the flag unfurling ceremony as an opportunity to highlight this, we couldn’t have done it without them.”

The Tiger Army Flag March will leave the Swinburne Centre, Punt Road Oval at 6pm and arrive at the MCG concourse (near Gate 4) at approximately 6:15pm. The Club advises fans to be seated by 6:45pm to watch the flag unfurling ceremony at the MCG.

A crowd of 90,000 is expected at the game, and the Club advises the best way to gain entry is to reserve a seat in advance.

Looks like Short will get the nod for Broad's spot.

---------------------------------------------------------------

RICHMOND star Alex Rance says teammate Jayden Short is ready to step into the backline on Thursday night and perform if he gets the nod as premiership defender Nathan Broad's replacement.

The Tigers could make two changes to their Grand Final back six for the season opener against Carlton at the MCG, with Broad serving a club-imposed suspension and Bachar Houli (calf) facing a fitness test.

Houli completed the warm up with the main group at training on Tuesday at Punt Road Oval before the session was closed to media and looks a strong chance to take his place against the Blues.

That would leave the match committee to make one change to their premiership defence, with Short putting his hand up with an excellent JLT Community Series, winning 25 possessions and a team-high six rebound 50s against North Melbourne.

"Without putting too much pressure on 'Shorty', I've loved his pre-season," Rance said on Tuesday.

"I think he's shown, especially in the North Melbourne game, that he breaks lines (and) is really clean by foot on both feet.

"I'm not 100 per cent sure what is going to happen in the back six just yet because we’ve still got a couple of guys going through fitness tests.

"I know he's ready to play if he does get called upon, but there's a couple of other guys in the mix for those spots too."

Richmond could also opt for half-back Reece Conca when it names its team on Wednesday night, with coach Damien Hardwick pleased with the 25-year-old's performances in both JLT Community Series games.

Premiership midfielder Dion Prestia is unlikely to be named on Wednesday night after missing both pre-season games with a hamstring injury.

Prestia, who warmed up with the main group and completed kicking drills on Tuesday, could be replaced by inside midfielder Anthony Miles, while Corey Ellis and Sam Lloyd have played in the midfield this pre-season.
