More than a VFL grand final berth at stake for Richmond players

Ronny Lerner
The Age
September 15 2017

There will be more on the line for Richmond's VFL footballers than trying to qualify for the 2017 grand final when they run out onto North Port Oval on Saturday.

The Tigers do battle with the Box Hill Hawks in the second preliminary final at the famous Port Melbourne ground and while helping Richmond reach their first grand final in 112 years in what is now known as the VFL is the aim, keeping heat on their senior teammates at the selection table is certainly a motivation as well.

Nineteen AFL-listed Richmond players will be playing for the VFL team this weekend in what is not only a strong indication of the club's depth but also a big tick for the club's high-performance team with only Nathan Drummond (knee) on the Tigers' injury list.

The senior Richmond side plays Greater Western Sydney or West Coast in next week's AFL second preliminary final at the MCG and while changes to the side that smashed Geelong by 51 points don't look likely, the VFL players will be desperate to give the selection committee a few things to ponder.

Sam Lloyd, Shaun Hampson and Oleg Markov were the emergencies for Richmond's qualifying final against Geelong last week and are all playing in Saturday's VFL preliminary final.

That trio would appear to be at the front of the queue if Richmond decided to make any changes next week, although in Hampson's case, an injury to first-choice ruckman Toby Nankervis seems his only hope of returning to the senior side.

Markov, who has played seven games this season, was the unlucky sole omission for the Tigers who welcomed back Josh Caddy for the big clash with the Cats.

Others who will be pushing a case for a recall are Jayden Short, Anthony Miles and possibly Connor Menadue.

Short (16) has played the most AFL games this year of any of the Richmond players who will line up against Box Hill.

The 21-year-old played every game from round two to 18 but was dropped after a modest performance against the Giants at the MCG.

The winner of the Richmond-Box Hill preliminary final will face Williamstown or Port Melbourne in the VFL grand final at Etihad Stadium next Sunday.

Just like last week, it's important for the whole club for the VFL side to win tomorrow. Keeps the momentum going and more importantly means the whole squad is motivated, match fit and in full training deep into September.

Agree'd; I feel like a big performance here really sets us up. We only lost by a few last time we played? I can't remember.

Craig McRae interview leading up to the VFL prelim final:

2nd PRELIMINARY FINAL

BOX HILL HAWKS vs RICHMOND

Saturday September 16, 2.40pm @ Fortburn Stadium

The Tiger Train will look to keep rolling in Richmond’s first VFL finals campaign since becoming an AFL standalone club in 2014 against a traditional powerhouse that appeared in three straight grand finals before missing September action in 2016.

The Hawks got the better of the Tigers at Box Hill City Oval in Round 5 in a shootout between the VFL’s top-scoring teams of the home-and-away season (Richmond first and Box Hill second), slotting 18 goals in a 22-point victory. Both teams like to use the ball by foot and back in May the Hawks kicked their way through the opposition defence and converted when inside 50 to prevail despite having three fewer scoring shots.

The key was their intense pressure forcing Richmond into error, and this time the likes of Andrew Moore, Mitch O’Donnell and Kade Stewart will need to match the hardness of Tigers play-makers Anthony Miles and Jacob Ballard, who have imposed themselves on finals this year. If they don’t, opportunistic Richmond forwards Sam Lloyd, Tyson Stengle and Shai Bolton will give headaches to Box Hill defenders like David Mirra and Max Warren, while up the other end the Hawks will need to find their own avenues to goal with Chris Jones (injury) and Tyrone Vickery (suspension) absent.

Miles high inside F50. A lucky bounce goes to Stengle who snaps towards the goalsquare and its rushed.

Great pressure by Morris. Markov nail another one  :gotigers.

Out of the middle from the centrebounce by Miles and Chol marks on the lead 25m out. Kicks this one  :gotigers

We get it forward again. Bolton free 60 out. He goes to the pocket. Morris hands to Chol who snaps a point.
