Love of defence pivotal to Richmond resurgence

Changing their attack on the ball in pre-season has been the biggest shift towards Richmond’s surge up the ladder and a potential first Grand Final appearance in 35 years, according to midfielder Kane Lambert.

It has been a drastic turnaround for the Tigers in 2017, considering the club has finished in the competition’s bottom three for tackles in six of the last ten seasons, including being ranked last in the statistic on four occasions.

The mature age rookie said while he did not necessarily expect it to correlate into becoming a premiership contender, he felt if they got the process right there was no limits to what they could achieve.

“We probably didn’t come into pre-season thinking we would come this far, but the beauty about our group is that we’re so process driven, and we didn’t really know what we could achieve if we got our processes right,” Lambert told SEN Breakfast.

“There was definitely a change in the way we attacked the man with the ball early in pre-season.

“The boys began to love defending and trying to win the ball back, and that was pretty evident from day one of pre-season.

“I think that’s been the biggest shift in our game over the past 12 months.”

In their victory over Geelong a fortnight ago, Richmond applied a season best 209 pressure points, along with their 92 tackles, a number that league statistician Champion Data described as ‘off the charts’.

Lambert said the 15 days off ahead of the clash against Greater Western Sydney has the team fresh and ready to play.

“We’ve been lucky enough to occupy a bit of our time watching our VFL players and getting inspired with what they’re doing in their own finals series,” he said.

“It has been a long wait, the boys are very excited to get out there and we’re going to be fresh and raring to go.”
