Richmond members have snapped up 44,000 public tickets and 10,000 from the AFL, but that is only the start of the swell expected to fill the 100,000-seat stadium.

The AFL revealed yesterday it has sold 1254 public tickets to Giants members and 500 to AFL members who claim allegiance to the orange army.

1 day to go. How good is the forecast for today! Winter has ended in Melbourne.
And tomorrow, the Giants will be ended too!

Massive crowd will only help Richmond: Ox

By Justin Talent
SEN
22 September 2017

David Schwarz believes the huge 95,000-strong crowd at the MCG for Saturday’s preliminary final between Richmond and the GWS Giants can only assist the Tigers.

Despite considering Richmond to have “grown up” in their ability to handle big pressure games this year, two-time Geelong premiership coach Mark “Bomber” Thompson raised the prospect of the mega crowd – who will mainly be donned in the yellow and black – working against the Tigers.

“It can work both ways for Richmond… I’ve seen it bring them home and I’ve seen it sort of scare the players to the point where they don’t feel like playing,” he told Fox Footy’s AFL 360 yesterday.

However Schwarz dismissed this possibility, saying that from his past experiences playing in front of huge crowds, the roar the Tigers fans will generate will be a great help to their side.

“It won’t work against them. It can only help,” the former Melbourne forward told SEN’s The Run Home.

“I’ve played a lot of footy at the G and had big crowds on our side and bigger crowds against us. The noise that came when you played a big Essendon crowd, a big Richmond crowd, a huge Collingwood crowd or a big Carlton crowd is deafening. You hear everything, it’s very unique.

“There’s no doubt that when 95,000 fans are cheering for one team, I can just imagine the Richmond players, how much energy it will give them. They will be walking on air.

“I don’t think it can be a negative in any way unless they start believing it rather than doing what they’re doing all season.

“It helps with the umpires too.”

The AFL have today updated their expected crowd attendance for Saturday’s game to fall somewhere between 95,000 and 97,000 people.

Reports earlier this week suggested that Giants supporters have bought approximately only 2000 tickets to the game – with the match expected to have the biggest difference of supporter numbers in attendance in the competition’s history.

Well done boys and girls. A loud crowd of 94,258  :clapping.

1. The Tiger army didn't disappoint
The hysteria surrounding Richmond's advantage in the supporter stakes raged to historic levels during the week and they certainly brought the noise to the MCG. The Giants were greeted with thunderous boos as they entered the arena, but the Tiger fans didn't find full voice until the yellow and black emerged form beneath the stands. Kane Lambert's goal 23 seconds into the preliminary final just about brought down the Great Southern Stand, and the atmosphere never dropped away, apart from the silence that followed each GWS goal. They had some nervous moments in the first half but went into full party mode when Richmond seized control of the match with six goals to one in the premiership term. Rest and recovery will be just as important for the fans this week as it will be for their heroes. The post-match scenes were stunning.

Richmond fans make more noise than a jet when Tigers booted early goal

Herald Sun
September 23, 2017 5:33pm

JET aeroplanes make an incredible rumble, but even they are not as loud as the Tiger Army in full voice.

The MCG shook on Saturday evening when Richmond made a pulsating start to its AFL preliminary final with the GWS Giants.

The Tigers fans gave their side an incredible reception as they entered the arena, and two goals inside two minutes had them nearing record levels.

“ ... we have the decibel metre out hovering around 120db,” Channel 7’s Cameron Ling reported at the quarter time break.

“It has landed at 122 db — just below a jet aeroplane — and just above the AC/DC and the Back in Black Tour, it was pumping.

“Trust me, these players will not be able to hear anything and communicate. They need to work together. But they can’t do it through yelling.”
