Hardwick praised the debut performance of Next Generation Academy product Derek Eggmolesse-Smith, who finished with 19 disposals.

"We were really impressed with what he did today. He's a good ball user, wins his own ball really well and sees the game really well," he said.

"He's got a little way to go, had a couple of errors, but we're really pleased with what he put out there today and he'll certainly grow from that."

Didn’t crack under pressure, scrambled opposition forwards and worked well with his teammates - egg sandwiched between short and Bachar won’t smell too bad!
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Richmond development and VFL backline coach Ryan Ferguson provides an insight into the progress of Derek Eggmolesse-Smith following his impressive AFL debut.

His skilful AFL debut

“His poise with the football and bringing others into the game with those sharp hands…He’s clever with the ball…once he has his hands on it, he can really do some things. He’s got that step and he’s got that vision. One of his points of difference to others is that he’s got a strong defensive mindset but he can also win the ball and be creative with the ball, so he’s got those two elements of the game that we value.”

Creative half-back Derek Eggmolesse-Smith returns for his third senior outing, his most recent appearance being Round 17, 2019.

Speaking to Richmond Media last weekend, VFL and development coach Xavier Clarke spoke highly of Eggmolesse-Smith's impact in the reserves.

"He plays the system really well and he got a lot of the ball. The beauty of Derek is he can make things happen when he gets the ball. He's a very good attacking half-back for us," he said.

Eggy won the TV on ch7 for best on ground. He had 23 disposals essentially playing Houli's role.

Dimma post-game said Eggy still has got a long way to go but is showing signs.

Lethal lefty and has some pace about him. Has been playing this way for some 18 months at VFL level so not overly surprised :shh
