Why Richo thinks it’s “obvious” the Tigers need Tom Lynch

Sportsday

Matthew Richardson has dismissed suggestions Tom Lynch could upset Richmond’s forward line.

The Tiger great says it was “obvious” to him his former club needed another tall forward.

The 2017 premier was surprisingly bundled out of September in the preliminary final.

Lynch wants to be a Tiger next season, leading some to question whether he’s required given the club’s recent success.

However, the club’s second greatest ever goalkicker expects Lynch to prove a valuable addition.

“Towards the end of the year it was obvious to me, having watched them closely for years, they did need a second tall forward,” Richardson said on Sportsday.

“I think it (a smaller forward line) had run its race a little bit, with the way the forward line was structured.

“Particularly in the last final against Collingwood where they couldn’t take a mark down the line and down the other end (Mason) Cox took eight contested marks.”

BTW, has Tom passed all the medical examinations with flying colours, with the exception of the knee and how it is progressing?

Suns' list manager Craig Cameron on Trade Radio talking about Lynch:

* Need to see what the official compensation from the AFL is first. At the moment it's still speculation.

* Some other players we'll be bringing in so we need to see the net effect of it all.

* We'll have 3 days to consider but the answer will come pretty quickly next week.

Lynch’ manager just on trade radio briefly touched on lynch in the ruck... mentioned that he can’t see him taking many centre bounces but would expect him to take some throw ins and bounces around the ground

The Tigers should table their offer for Tom Lynch on Friday

THIS year's player exchange period should start with a bang on Friday with Richmond expected to lodge its free agency offer for Gold Coast spearhead Tom Lynch.

Lynch nominated the Tigers as his preferred new club on Tuesday and sources close to the deal were confident the official paperwork would be lodged at AFL House soon after the free agency window opens at 9am AEST on Friday.

Richmond's offer is understood to be for at least six years and worth about $1 million a season.

Once the Tigers table their offer, Gold Coast will have three business days to decide whether to match it given Lynch is a restricted free agent.

But it appears unlikely the Suns would do that given they're almost certain to be offered pick No.3 in this year's NAB AFL Draft as compensation for losing their former co-captain via free agency.

Lynch knocked back Hawks $1m p.a. offer to accept Tigers $900k p.a (Age)

Gold Coast will have three days to determine whether they match the Tigers' offer for Lynch and thereby force Richmond to trade for the key forward.

This is unlikely to happen, however, with the Gold Coast anticipating pick three as compensation for Lynch who is understood to have knocked back an offer of around $1 million a year from Hawthorn to accept the Tigers, whose offer is understood to be about $900,000 a year.

The Suns are expected to use the time available to clarify with the AFL whether their compensation would be affected if they recruited Geelong's unrestricted free agent George Horlin-Smith before declaring their position on Lynch.

Compensation is determined after the AFL takes into account the net outcome for clubs that both lose and gain players.

Richmond set to lodge offer for Tom Lynch on first day of free agency period

Jon Ralph,
Herald Sun
October 5, 2018

TOM Lynch will have to wait until Monday to officially become a Richmond player on a six or seven-year deal expected to be worth just under a million dollars a season.

The former Gold Coast captain could be one of the first players to have a free agency offer lodged on the first day of the official period.

Richmond’s Reece Conca will find his way to the Dockers and Alex Fasolo will get to Carlton but clubs have until Friday week to lodge bids.

The Suns will not match the Lynch bid but will spend the three permitted days assessing an offer expected to be lodged on Friday by the Tigers.

They will likely receive pick three as compensation, but the AFL assesses compo on free agent movement as a whole, not individual deals — in 2013 Carlton received no compensation for losing Eddie Betts after bringing in Dale Thomas.

The Suns will assess the scope of the Lynch deal to clarify if they could bring in a free agent on a much more modest contract without it affecting the No.3 overall selection.

Lynch’s deal is expected to be at least six years and possibly even seven seasons, with Lynch recovering from PCL surgery and turning 26 on October 31.
