By their standards, the Suns have some reasonable ins this week.

Dimma on the Footy Show said at this time of the year you're putting things together for September and as a result  some players are stiff to be left out of the side (specifically mentioned Towner and Lloyd).

Time to start to settle the premiership defense 22, they will have the next three week block to knuckle down and get into rhythm as the group. Perfect game for Nank to get a bit of a rest, but not the others. LLoyd, Townsend etc will not play in the grand final unless injuries happen.

The big question you should be asking yourselves is, How does Butler get back into the side, WHO goes out for him, that is a big, big question. Also, what happens to Conca, and if he comes in, WHO goes out, or does he stay out and miss another opportunity.

Big questions will be asked and answered at match committee in the next three weeks.

Depends on where Higgins plays. With Prestia and Graham back in the midfield and Baker dropped, then presumably Higgo will play forward this week as the 3rd small forward behind Rioli and George. That could see him pushed out when Butler returns. If Dimma wants to keep Higgo then he'll have to push a mid/flanker out as will Conca (to get back inside the side). Arguably, with Macca who's been in and out of the side this year, all three are vying for one spot in the 22 in September. It may come down to match-ups as they are all different types.

Should the Tigers rest players against the Suns? (SEN)

Should the Tigers rest players against the Suns?

By SEN
10 Aug 2018

Former AFL club captains Tim Watson and Garry Lyon disagree about whether Richmond should rest players in tomorrow’s game against Gold Coast.

The Tigers have boosted their squad for the clash, bringing back premiership players Dion Prestia, Bachar Houli, Nathan Broad and Jack Graham.

However, with another September run looming for Richmond, Watson has pondered if Damien Hardwick should consider resting some sore bodies against the lowly Suns.

“They should be resting blokes,” Watson told SEN Breakfast.

“I think they should. These blokes have played every game for Richmond this year – Jack Riewoldt, Shane Edwards, Jayden Short, Alex Rance and Kane Lambert.

“Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin have only missed one game.

“Their best players have actually played (nearly) every game this year.

“They need a spell before the finals.”

Lyon believes that strategy is far too risky.

“It’s dangerous,” he said.

“They thrive on the work. Don’t start flirting with your form three weeks out.

“They’re going to have a week off in three weeks. You want to give them two weeks off in three weeks?

“It’s a danger about interrupting and upsetting the way they’ve had such great success over the last two years.”

Tigers not taking risks with 'sore' Toby

RICHMOND has downplayed any significant injury concerns surrounding Toby Nankervis, with the Tigers taking the opportunity to manage the star ruckman appropriately ahead of Saturday's clash with Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium.

Nankervis has a corked quad and pulled up sore after last Friday night's clash against Geelong. Young big man Ivan Soldo gets the chance to come into the team after solid form in the VFL.

Tigers assistant coach Justin Leppitsch said the club was making sure Nankervis's body was in top shape heading into September.

"Toby was a bit sore coming off the game so you obviously don't want to take any risks this time of year," Leppitsch said at Melbourne Airport on Friday morning.

"If it was a Grand Final tomorrow, would he play? Probably yes, but we just think how important he is to us.

"He's probably the only one that we would afford that luxury to."

The Tigers have brought back premiership stars Dion Prestia (rib), Nathan Broad (calf), Jack Graham (shoulder) and Bachar Houli (calf) for the game against the Suns.

Emerging forward Dan Rioli checked in for the flight to the Gold Coast despite carrying a right knee concern.

"He's fine. He's pulled up with a little niggle after the game, but he's right to go," Leppitsch said.

Jacob Townsend was Richmond's travelling emergency.
