Tiger signs on because he 'loves the club'

RICHMOND has retained one of its most exciting young talents after re-signing small forward Shai Bolton.

In March, the uncontracted West Australian put talks for a new deal on hold until the end of the season, sparking fears he could depart Punt Road.

However, Bolton's manager, Ralph Carr, told AFL.com.au on Wednesday his client had finalised a new deal with the Tigers, but preferred not to divulge the length of contract.

"We're excited to re-sign, Shai was always going to because he loves the club," Carr said.

"We put talks on hold until the end of the year but that was more so Shai could concentrate on his football and developing his game.

"He loves the club, loves the facilities – Richmond has the best indigenous facilities in the AFL – and he can't wait to return for the pre-season."

Taken with pick No.29 in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft, Bolton played six games in a highly promising debut season.

The 19-year-old played just three games this year because of injury, form and Richmond's settled senior line-up, but his speed, goal sense and defensive pressure suggests he has a bright future.

Bolton's re-signing is a coup for Richmond, which is poised to lose valuable depth with Reece Conca, Sam Lloyd, Corey Ellis, Anthony Miles, Jacob Townsend and Tyson Stengle all expected to depart in the upcoming player exchange period.

However, the Tigers are set to land this year's biggest free agency prize, with former Gold Coast captain Tom Lynch nominating Punt Road as his preferred new home on Tuesday.

Yep, it's just a one-year deal.

Bolton signs on

Young livewire forward Shai Bolton will remain at Tigerland in 2019, after re-committing to the Club today.

The 19-year-old, WA-product has shown glimpses of his skill, speed, and smarts around goal in his first two seasons of league football.

Bolton played three senior games this year, as injuries marred part of his 2018 campaign, as well as being edged out at the selection table with strong competition from Richmond’s other small forwards.

“We’re really pleased for Shai to sign on with us for next season, he’s a talented player and a good young man,” Richmond’s General Manager – Football, Neil Balme said.

“With another full pre-season under his belt, we’re really excited for Shai to continue his development.”

Bolton was drafted to the Tigers with selection 29 of the 2016 AFL Draft, and has played nine senior games and kicked four goals in his first two seasons.

I think a one year deal is good for both parties.
Good on him for having another crack at it.
I hope it works out for all of us including Shai.

Yep, it might have been us who wanted to offer only a year. 2019 is a make or break year for Bolts. He needs to focus over the preseason on doing the bread and butter things in footy consistently and well if he wants to break into the senior side on a regular basis.

“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.
