15 touches, three goals the aim

With his much-anticipated AFL comeback now just days away, a confident Nathan Brown says he can see no reason why he can't recapture his best form.

The dual All-Australian was arguably in career best form when he suffered a severe broken leg against Melbourne in round 10 last year, having kicked 34 goals already for the season - including five in the final quarter against Collingwood in round eight against the one of the AFL's best defenders in James Clement.

But now having overcome one of the most serious injuries seen in the AFL in recent years in time for the start of the 2006 home and away season, the Richmond vice-captain has set his sights high.

While his goals for the round one clash against his former club the Western Bulldogs on Friday night are modest - stating on Tuesday he would like to finish with 15 possessions and three goals - Brown's long-term aims are to again become one of the best small forwards in the AFL.

"I want to get back to where I was as quickly as possible," Brown said on Tuesday.

"There are going to be some restrictions but I don’t see any reasons why I can't and I will be disappointed if I don't."

"Even if I can't play like I did last year, I can contribute and kick a few goals and hand a few off but the main thing I want to do is win games."

Richmond coach Terry Wallace said the courage Brown has shown in getting back has been underestimated by the football public.

"We always have a bit of fun with Browny with his high profile and his metrosexual image but I have been amazed with his determination."

"He is a lot more courageous than what people realise, people see the skill factor but don't realise the courage that is behind it."

"The amount of work he has done and his determination to get himself back to this stage has been quite remarkable."

Wallace admitted on Tuesday there were times throughout the pre-season when he didn't think Brown would be back for round one.

"I thought we were going to be in a very embarrassing scenario come this week about whether we were going to play him," Wallace said.

"Medically he was okay but the question was could he earn his place back in the side and I thought that was going to be a problem for the footy club but he has earned the right to play and no-one is picking him for any other reason."

However Wallace warned fans not to expect too much of Brown at first.

"I have said all along anyone that expects Nathan to be where he was in rounds seven or eight of last year is kidding themselves."

"It probably took him seven or eight years to get to that level but then to have what happened to him and then expect him to take over a round one clash is unrealistic."

"I think he will get back to the form he was in but it will take time."

Brown, who will play with the rod that was inserted into his broken leg throughout 2006 before having it removed at the end of the season, says he is not nervous about his comeback.

"I am not so much nervous, just anxious to get on with it," he said.

"The nerves went with the first couple of practice matches but I have done so much media in the last month, I just hope I get a kick."

Browny's back, after a short break (The Age)

He's back, after a short break

NATHAN Brown has lost half a season, but little ambition.

The Richmond forward has not played in a real game since the end of May, and doesn't expect his first match back to bring nine goals and Brownlow votes. But he doesn't want to waste time, either.

"I'd definitely like to kick nine or so," he said yesterday.

"But I think a respectable performance would be … I don't know, you can't put a number on it. But a 15-possession, three-goal game would be more than ample."

Brown is well aware that he will play the Western Bulldogs with a steel rod running through his right leg. He still gets a bit sore, and isn't ready to complete consecutive training sessions, but has split his training with pool, bike and rowing sessions, and feels fit.

He suspects he will feel more soreness for parts of Friday night, and that people might think he is still limping.

"When I'm moving flat-out, I sort of look better, but when I'm going half-pace or jogging, I've been told that you can notice a little bit of a limp there," Brown says.

"That's something I've acquired. But when you're going flat-out, I think your body takes over."

While Brown always has intended to be back, and for round one, others are more surprised by how quickly he has come back. After he broke his leg, his captain, Kane Johnson, heard of others who had not played again, and worried his teammate would join them.

"I think it was just after Christmas — I watched him out here one day and he was running and doing some sprints," Johnson said. "I actually got a bit nervous because, as he said, when he's jogging, he can look a little bit proppy.

"But over the last month, he's improved out of sight and I've got absolutely no worries now that he'll get back to his best at some stage. Whether it takes half a season or three games, whatever it takes, he'll get back there."

Brown's coach Terry Wallace had some concerns, too. Wallace didn't wonder whether the player he took into a finals series as a teenage Western Bulldog would get back but how borderline he would be for the opening game.

"I thought we were going to be in a very embarrassing scenario come this week, about whether we were going to play him or not play him," Wallace said. "Medically, they were going to say he was OK but whether he could play football and actually earn his spot in the side, I thought was going to be a problem.

"He's earned the right to play. No one's picking him for any other reason."

Brown wants to play every game this season, though the possibility of playing a few, then taking a week off, has been broached. He is more anxious about getting started than being nervous about what might happen.

More than anything, he wants to remember what it feels like to win again. "I want to get back to where I was as quickly as it's possible. Obviously, there's going to be some restrictions but I don't see any reason why I couldn't and I'd be disappointed if I don't," Brown said.

"I just want to get back to playing winning football games because it's a lonely world, football, when you're losing."

Doc Larkins not so certain on Brown (Herald-Sun)

Doc's not so certain on Brown
29 March 2006

THE bone has healed, but the tissue and muscle around it could still cause problems.

That is the opinion of leading sports medico Peter Larkins, who saw Nathan Brown's horrific injury up close last year and feared the Tiger might never return.

"From a medical point of view as an outsider, the concern would be not whether the bone is going to heal but whether his muscle, nerve and soft-tissue recovery is sufficient to give him back that power in the leg," Larkins said last night.

"Scar tissue in the calf will make him more prone to calf soreness and calf tightness.

"The muscular anatomy would have changed in his leg as a result of the significant stripping of the muscles away from the bone.

"I'm pleased he's back playing.

"To get back inside 12 months is a fantastic achievement and testament to the work Nathan's done.

"I'd be surprised if he's match-ready to play 100 minutes of footy.

"I believe Richmond will protect him over the coming month."

Larkins, reporting from the boundary the night Brown went down, said he had feared the worst.

"I had concerns he wouldn't be back to play at all," he said. "In my eyes it was a very, very severe example of a double break. Other sports people have had that injury and not come back."

I'll admit I'm a bit nervous for Browny.  But I will be the same when my son gets the cast of his arm too.

If Browny marks and kicks the first goal the Dome will go off. I remember when Justin Charles had his first game back and did the same at the 'G. Just one massive roar. Hopefully Browny's career won't end there and then like it did for Charles.

ps. best wishes for a quick recovery for your son Julz.
