Injured Tiger Caddy reveals likely return date

SEN
26 March 2019

Richmond forward Josh Caddy expects to shake off an ankle problem and return to football via the VFL in two weeks time.

Caddy, 26, has been on light duties after experiencing ankle soreness in February and subsequently missed both the Tigers’ JLT matches and the Round 1 win over Carlton.

“I’ve actually had a bit of bone stress in the tibia,” he told the AFL Nation pre-game show.

“I’ve had to stay off legs for a couple of weeks and therefore I’ve had to slowly ramp things back up again because I didn’t run for a few weeks.

“I’m back running around at training now but it’s just a matter of ticking all the boxes, so I don’t come back and do a hamstring or anything like that.

“I’m hoping to play the week of Round 3 and it will probably be at VFL level.”

 Josh Caddy    Ankle            1-3 weeks
 Shaun Grigg    Knee            Indefinite
 Ben Miller     Appendicitis    1-3 weeks
 Alex Rance    Knee            Season

Updated: Tuesday, March 26

Early prognosis:
The biggest addition to Richmond's short injury list is five-time All Australian Rance, who ruptured his ACL in round one. Caddy is slowly getting closer to a return but didn't play any pre-season matches. He is building his running loads and training with the main group. Grigg is a way off, while young defender Miller will miss a few weeks with appendicitis. Jason Castagna (ankle), Ryan Garthwaite (Achilles) and Jacob Townsend (thigh) returned through the VFL last week. - Sarah Black

Peter Burge's injury update:

Josh Caddy, ankle

“Josh is going really well, he’s been back training with the group now for a week. We’ll look at him playing some game time this weekend, whether that’s AFL or VFL, we’ll make that call later in the week. But he’s been really good. Initially he had those three weeks off where he didn’t run at all, so it’s been a slow progression, but the last couple of weeks has been really promising and we look forward to seeing him play this weekend.”

Bachar Houli, hamstring

“Bachar in round one just pulled up a little sore from an incident late in the game. We thought it may have been a cramp but we had some scans done and he had a very minor hamstring strain. So he missed last week and he’s progressing slowly but it’s not moving as quickly as we’d like, so he’s probably going to miss this week as well. We’ll be more confident going into full training next week and hopefully for the Port Adelaide game he’ll be back. Given Bachar’s recent history, he had a couple of niggles last year, we just want to make sure that when he comes back he’ll be right to go."

Jack Riewoldt, wrist

"We saw Jack have that (round two) incident where he went for a mark and then he fell on his hand. He’s got a little fracture in the bottom of his wrist and a little bit of ligament damage. It’s really just time that we need with this. The doctor said around four weeks, so we hope he’s a quick healer and it’s sooner than that, but at the moment it’s just time. He’ll do a bit of running and general conditioning, but he won’t be marking or jumping at any footys certainly this week."

Alex Rance, knee

"The surgery went fantastically well. He hasn’t got a lot of swelling, and he can straighten his leg already which is a really good sign. Alex will gradually get into a low level exercise program, just getting movement back into his knee. He’s hobbling round a little bit at the moment. Knowing Alex, he’ll recover quicker than others but we’ll be very careful in his rehab and obviously we’re looking ahead to next year so we’ve got time on our side and round one next year, we’ll see him out there."

Shaun Grigg, knee

"We’ve had some real progress in the last week or two, he’s now started to kick the footy again and run a little bit quicker. Probably the next one to two weeks, we’ll up the intensity and see where we’re at. Hopefully we can get a return to skills really soon and get him back into some full training and from there, we can try give an exact timeline of when he’ll play again."

RICHMOND captain Trent Cotchin will be sidelined for up to three weeks with a left hamstring strain, while teammate Jayden Short is expected to be out for at least two months.

Short dislocated his right elbow in the opening minutes of the 49-point loss to Greater Western Sydney and has damaged ligaments in his arm.

He requires a consultation with a surgeon, with a clearer timeframe to be decided after that.

"We're obviously disappointed to lose Trent and Jayden to injury for a period of time, both players will go through their rehab and recovery processes, and we look forward to getting them both back in due course," Richmond general manager of football Neil Balme said.

"Fortunately, we expect to bolster the team with some players to return from injuries, as we as Dylan Grimes (suspension) available for selection."

Forward Josh Caddy played 70 per cent game time in the VFL on Friday night in his return from an ankle injury, while running back Bachar Houli has been listed as "probable" by the club after missing two weeks with a hamstring strain.

Small forwards Mav Weller (leg) and Jake Aarts (corked calf) both missed the VFL match and are touch and go to play this weekend.

Three-time Coleman medallist Jack Riewoldt is at least two weeks away (wrist), while experienced mid Shaun Grigg (knee) is still quite some way off.

Five-time All Australian key back Alex Rance is out for the year with a torn ACL.

Nope
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.
