Stack blow for Tigers on finals eve

Sydney Stack’s stellar debut season appears to have come to an end after he suffered an ankle injury in today’s VFL win over Essendon.

Stack, 19, was unlucky to be dropped from the Tigers’ side to face West Coast tomorrow, and was on his way to a monster game when the injury occurred in the third quarter.

Already with 15 touches to his name after spending time in Richmond’s midfield, Stack went into a contest to bump an Essendon player when his ankle gave way.

Tigers’ VFL coach Craig McRae said the outcome didn’t look good for Stack who left the ground on crutches.

“It’s an ankle injury but it’s too early to diagnose the extent of it, whether it’s a syndesmosis I’m not sure,” he said.

“But it doesn’t look good, he’s on crutches so I would have thought he’s in doubt for the short term.”

McRae said Stack will be sent for scans to assess the damage.

“He went into a contest, he said, and went to bump the bloke and I think his ankle became unstable,” he said.

“Time will tell, that will obviously be one we get scans for and deal with what comes from that.”

Maybe it's just a rolled ankle. It's his first one, he could get back to 90-95% within 3 weeks. He wouldn't get a game in a SF or a prelim but if he can do that, he could press for the squad of 25 for the granny if we make it and stranger picks have happened for GF's.

Hardwick sort of eluded to it as the reason without stating it explicitly.

Leppitsch on 3aw just now said Stack probably needs surgery. Injury similar to what Kane Lambert did this time last year.

That could affect his preseason going into 2020.

Mark Stevens on Ch7 news tonight said Stack will miss the rest of the season and they showed vision of Stack in the rooms today still on crutches.

In other injury news out of the weekend, Tiger youngster Sydney Stack is expected to undergo surgery on his injured ankle.

The 19-year-old hurt his right ankle during the opening half of Richmond's 12-point VFL victory over Essendon on Saturday and failed to return to the field after half-time.

He was later seen on crutches and Hardwick confirmed on Sunday that the news wasn't good for the highly rated youngster.

"(His season) will be a little bit delayed obviously with the syndesmosis, which is disappointing," Hardwick said.

"He'll have surgery at some stage this week, we've just got to hope for a good response.

"(Kane) Lambert had a similar type of injury possibly a week earlier last year and he got back and played finals.

"Sydney's a really important player to the way we play so we're hoping he'll come back."

That is sad and pathetic!

Hardwick told a crowd of people yesterday according to the Doc, that Stack was dropped for disciplinary reasons and you won’t let people talk about it on a Richmond footy forum.
