Biggest stories of 2019:

25. Brilliant debut year proves Tiger has a Stack of talent

Sydney Stack had already arrived by the time he cannoned into Jack Viney's right shoulder with a brutal – but completely fair – bump from the opposite direction on Anzac Day eve. It was Stack's fourth senior game but he was already a Tiger favourite, rising from the undrafted kid who was considered more trouble than he was worth to most other clubs. Richmond took a shot on him with the new pre-season supplemental selection period rules in a move that is already paying rich dividends. Stack was a NAB AFL Rising Star nominee in round 11 and finished third in the award overall from his 17 games. If his excellent, hard-hitting play wasn't enough to keep him in the headlines, then his on-field interaction with Eddie Betts certainly did. After a typically ridiculous Betts goal went through, the then-Crow pointed in Stack's direction and they had a quick embrace. The exchange polarised opinion but Indigenous Player Alliance chairman and ex-AFL footballer Des Headland put it all in perspective for AFL.com.au.

Livewire Tiger Sydney Stack flying

By Sarah Black

LIVEWIRE Richmond utility Sydney Stack is at his bouncy best ahead of his second AFL season.

Teammate Dylan Grimes said Stack – who wasn't officially added to the Tigers' list until March of this year, through the supplemental selection period – was moving well on the track.

To help with his off-season back home in Perth, the youngster was given incentives in his contract to return in tip-top shape.

Stack captured the imagination of the football world with his fearless attack on the ball, high-flying traits and neat ball skills at both ends of the ground, playing 17 games before an untimely syndesmosis ankle injury saw him miss the AFL finals.

"He's come back absolutely as we could have hoped, really. He hasn't missed a beat, he's running well, and as you'll see tonight, he's training well," Grimes said.

"We know our players are going to return in good nick, regardless where we finish in the season prior or how strict or lax the off-season programs are, we've had players come back in good nick for a long time now.

"'Stacky' is no exception, so it's good to see him meet those targets in his contract and be ready to tackle the year from the right space.

'Stacky' came into the program as a pretty well-made AFL player. His personality type is that he's full of confidence, he's a confidence player. He hasn't changed his personality or the way he goes about his off-field or on-field game at all, since the moment he came.

There’s a Stack of love at Tigerland

Lauren Wood,
Herald Sun
January 6, 2020

The AFL’S newest power couple is in the house.

Monique Conti – one of AFL Women’s top stars heading into 2020 – and her new boyfriend Sydney Stack, who has played 17 games in yellow and black, met at the club and became “Instagram official” last month in the first known relationship between an AFL and AFLW player.

The pair hit the track together for the first time before Christmas when Richmond’s AFL and AFLW outfits trained as a unit at Punt Road.

They have holidayed together in recent weeks before now returning to training.

Conti, who turned 20 in December, said the pair were “really happy”.

“We met here, and now we’re here,” she told the Herald Sun.

“There’s really not much more to it. (I’m) really happy. He is really awesome.”

Conti – a star dual-sport athlete who also plays WNBL for the Melbourne Boomers – played 15 games with the Western Bulldogs, including the 2018 AFLW premiership, before moving to the Tigers at the end of last season.

The 20-year-old was named in the AFLW All-Australian team last year and claimed the Bulldogs’ best and fairest and is widely tipped to have a big impact on the fourth season of the burgeoning competition.

She said she and Stack often talk about football and she can’t wait to see him take his game to the next level.

“It’s good. It’s great,” she said.

“I can’t wait to go and watch him play next year, because he’s going to be such a good player.”

“Sydney Stack is really interesting as well,” Terry Wallace added.

“Does he finish as the small, carrying defender or does he end up as a forward? He played both roles throughout the year but certainly showed enough.”

Stack put together 17 games in the yellow and black before his first season in the AFL was cut short by an ankle injury.
