August 3, 2021 Richmond defender Sydney Stack, one of the great tales of redemption this season, is firming for a contract extension.
Tigers senior advisor Neil Balme said on Tuesday Stack, who was the side’s best player in the four-point loss to Fremantle on Sunday, had shown he was an important piece of the future.
Stack, 21, is off contract this season and had to reaffirm his commitment to the team and club after a tumultuous off-season in which he found himself in jail in Western Australia after breaking bio-security protocols.
“It shouldn’t be a problem, I would think,” Balme said of a new contract.
“It’s a two-way relationship, isn’t it? You have got to give them a chance and help them, and that’s what we have done, and he has responded well.”
Stack, having regained match fitness through the VFL, returned to the senior side in round 17 and against the Dockers had a career-high 25 disposals and a career-high 12 intercepts and 10 marks. He also had four score involvements in 455 metres gained.
“He is a very talented kid … it is not as easy to play the game as we think it is. In fact, I haven’t made a mistake in the lounge room for 25 years,” Balme said.
