So 8 games at RFC "home grounds" (incl Punt Rd, Holm Park and MCG).  But 10 games away from our home venues?  How the hell is this fair, or am I missing something?

AFL to bring back more curtain-raisers in Victoria in 2019

The days of watching back-to-back games of football are returning with the AFL set to announce it will be raising the number of VFL curtain-raisers played in 2019.

Back in the 1970s and 80s it was possible to go to a Victorian ground at 9am to catch the under19s before the reserves faced off and then the seniors, but the viewing public hasn’t been getting as much boot for their buck for many years.

A limited number of curtain-raisers were played at Marvel (Etihad) and GMHBA Stadiums in 2018, but the MCG will also be getting involved with at least three games expected to be announced.

Richmond is at the forefront, with the Tigers’ VFL side taking on Hawthorn’s seconds (Box Hill) in round nine and Carlton’s twos (the Northern Blues) in round 21.

The heart of winter will most likely be left to single-game fixtures at the MCG with concerns over the ground condition in the wet weather.

The number of early clashes at Marvel will also rise as the venues five co-tenants (North Melbourne, Carlton, St Kilda, Essendon and the Western Bulldogs) aim to get in on the action.

There will be one less early starter at GMHBA Stadium as the Cats go from three to two, but it's expected the Country Game against Essendon in round seven will be one of the fixtures set aside at the MCG.

While the move will be promoted as bringing back grass-roots football and providing the fans with a better entertainment experience, the motivation behind it comes from broadcaster Channel Seven in an aim to cut costs by fulfilling their VFL and AFL commitments all in one hit.

The fact the move is tied to television coverage will also see the gap between games shortened, with a break of around 35 to 45 minutes from the final siren in the seconds to the ball being bounced in the main game.
