“Chase that feeling again”: Tigers eyeing return to the top

By SEN
18 Jan 2019

Richmond veteran Shaun Grigg says the playing group are eager to experience the elation of winning a premiership once again after falling short in 2018.

The Tigers won 18 games during the home-and-away season and breezed past Hawthorn in their Qualifying Final encounter before falling at the Preliminary Final hurdle to Collingwood.

Grigg says the upset loss to the Magpies is spurring the Tigers on during their pre-season campaign.

“You really want to chase that feeling again,” Grigg told SEN Breakfast.

“Once you’ve tasted it, it’s something that you can’t explain to people what it’s like, so once you’ve had it you just want to chase that feeling again.

“We’re doing everything we can this pre-season and going into the year to give ourselves a chance to chase it again.

“Unfortunately, on Prelim Final night the Pies came out and deserved to win – they played a lot better than us.

“We learned from 2017 that if you catch fire, things come together late in the year and you get some momentum, you can cause some damage in the finals.”

“We look back at the year as a whole and it was pretty successful, winning 18 or 19 games and playing some really good footy in parts and learning some lessons along the way,” he said.

“Unfortunately, on preliminary night, the Pies came out and they deserved the win…as we learnt in 2017 if you catch fire and things come together later in the year you can get the momentum and cause some damage in the finals.”

Not spending too much time in the rearview mirror, Grigg will continue to look ahead as he chases the success he tasted in 2017.

“It’s something you can’t explain…once you’ve had it, you just want to chase that feeling again so we’re doing everything, certainly this pre-season and going into the year, to give ourselves a chance,” Grigg said.

When asked whether the group will be working on tweaking their game to stay ahead of the game or improving their execution, Grigg said it will be a combination of both.

“With our training, it’s really footy specific so we can look at the year now…we train how we’re going to play,” he said.

“It’s not just fitness work running circles around the oval. We apply our fitness in our footy stuff so we’ve really got all eyes on the footy year now.”

While he’s not yet sure how Richmond’s 2019 forward line will be structured, Grigg said the tall forward duo of Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt is set to be “a good look”.

“Obviously they’re both great players so they’re going to help us, we’ll have a look at it over pre-season and how it can work and how they can work together,” he said.

“I think it’s only going to make us better.”
