Dustin Martin – A Cut Above The Rest

He's Richmond AFL's MVP and he has charisma for miles. But what about that haircut…?

He's the only AFL player to be awarded the Norm Smith and Brownlow medals in the same year, and at just 27 years old, Dustin Martin has already achieved great things.

As well as the fact he can kick with both feet and explode into a full sprint from standing, Martin's footy skills aren't the only thing he's well known for.

I mean, that hair, right?

#15 Young and Dusty

This is Martin pre-tatts (apart from the ones on his neck) and you can see he was already sporting a mohawk. The then-20-year old's footy career has gone to great heights and so has his hair style.

#14 The Crown

Never more at home than on the footy field, Martin has played with the mohawk-mullet in all its various forms. Here, it's more like a short back and sides with a crown tuft. You'd almost be willing to take him to meet your mum.

#13 Mullet alert

Aha, in 2012 we started to see Martin with a long back and short sides. In other words, a mullet. Here, Martin's in full swing at training and his hair will make sure we never forget where he is on the pitch.

#12 Dusty goes demure

By Feb 2012 Dusty's haircut was more demure but his game was constantly creeping forward. Unlike his phobia of snakes and spiders, which, according to the Richmond FC offical website are what scare him most.

#11 Shine like a diamond

Since being drafted to Richmond in 2010, Martin has scored 218 goals. Here he is in 2013 as his career was beginning to climb.

As for the hair? According to the Richmond FC website, the celebrity Martin would love to meet is Rihanna. Wonder what she'd have to say about the Dustin Martin Haircut?

#10 Guns ahoy

Martin checks the scoreboard in a 2014 match against the Brisbane Lions while we check out his guns. You can see new tattoos beginning to appear on his forearms while his hair is simply shaved at the sides.

#9 The mullet's back

Just like David Beckham, Martin's become known as being a top footy player and general icon. We love you Dusty but we're not sure if this cut's just a weensy bit too bogan. Letting you off for now.

#8 Modern man

When he's not kicking goals, the 92kg Richmond midfielder likes to chill out and watch Modern Family. At least it keeps him away from the barber. Here he's looking hot and handsome showing off a short buzz cut with mini-mohawk in April 2015.

#7 Call triple zero

In 2015, Martin closely escaped jail after a Japanese restaurant owner accused him of threatening to stab her with a chopstick. The charges were dropped and Martin received a $5000 club fine.

Meanwhile, the fashion police will be pressing charges.

#6 Cutting his losses

Nobody like losing, especially to the Western Bulldogs. Hair's looking good though… still mullet-ish but kinda cool.

#5 Winning streak

Martin celebrates a goal against Carlton with an air punch in March 2017. Meanwhile, we're celebrating his smooth shave and lack of mullet.

#4 Back a winner

Martin made his debut with Richmond in 2010 and when he joined, his teammates described him as a shy, timid young thing (hard to believe, but it's true). Today, he's famous for being a force on the field, and of course, the mohawk-mullet.

Here we get a full back view of he Dusty Cut at a Tigers versus Lions match in 2017.

#3 Free haircuts all round

Richmond took the cup after their win against the Crows at the MCG on 30 Sept 2017 and that's when a Melbourne hairdresser, called Dr Follicles, offered free Dusty Haircuts to celebrate the Tigers' win.

#2 Headlining

The good news is, by 2017 Dustin Martin's hair seemed to have settled into a neat and tidy mini-mohawk. Here's the full back view in case you need a pic to take to the barber.

#1 Headshot

We've yet to see what Martin's cut will be for 2019, but if his last outing at was anything to go by, I think we're safe to assume the Dusty Martin Haircut has come into its own.
