When the going gets tough ....
« on: April 02, 2006, 09:02:33 PM »
To continue the musical theme we've had this week with "Tonight's the Night" and "Tell Me Why" lol

How do you think Terry will respond if the going gets tough this year.  He walked from the Dogs for whatever reasons.  Do you reckon his ego (and he has a healthy one - which is not a criticism because if he didn't i wouldn't have confidence in him) would take a beating, or is he the type of person who can get through the tough times, unlike all the other coaches of the last 25 years.

He is a smart man (I'm sure he has plenty of Grecian handy and will have that sun lounge running 24 hours a day to give him a healthy glow lol), but we are the toughest gig in the AFL and i wonder how internally he will cope.  He says he wanted the challenge to see us become the power we once were, and although many of us said we are prepared to wait for the kids to grow, in reality, we're not going to put up with performances like last Friday too readily me thinks.  We deserve better and David King can say that he hopes the supporters don't turn on the club, and so do i.  But if the supporters were booing the players on Friday, and we get a repeat performance this week, heaven help us.

I'm sure he thinks he's tough, but he's never been through a bad year like he could get this year if we get more of the same.

Hang tough Tezza.  I'm not going to be getting the knives out for him and i hope others won't either.  It will be the end of the club if we do.  But this is Richmond and we don't do things nicely.  We're bitter and twisted, and for good reason - we've had enough crap.

I hope TW doesn’t let himself get caught up in any press/media/supporter generated frenzy, should the going get tough(er).

Unlike some of the other coaches we’ve had, TW doesn’t associate himself with poor performances.  Which isn’t a criticism either.  In fact, it’s probably a good thing, especially at Richmond.

Other coaches have let themselves be consumed by the on-field performances and then become totally bogged down by the drama that is Richmond.  You know, the whole media jumping on any Richmond negative they can find, blowing up any loss and getting mileage out of it for their own gain. :sleep :sleep That sort of thing.

It no doubt wore some of them down.  To the point where they were probably questioning themselves and their methods and whether they actually knew what they were doing.

If there's any decency left in the world, they'll let him get on with the job of coaching Richmond, without the usual unnecessary interference. :banghead

A good time to re-watch that "Year of the Dog" doco. He was assistant coach at Footscray in 96 before taking over as coach midway through the season when Joyce quit. They were a rabble that year - just 5 wins (2 against the dying Fitzroy) and their first two games were 87 and 131 point hidings. So IMO he'll be able to hack it out now. He signed for 5 years and experienced the Tigers first hand in a wooden spoon year when the club was on its knees so he would know what he was getting himself into.

According to Wallace he left the doggies in 2002 due to cuts to resources which isn't happening at Richmond despite the financial restraints.

Wallace cant leave. He wont leave because

a) he makes a very very healty salary i imagine close to $500-600k per year. Would any of you walk out on a job that pays that much
b) he needs to make Richmond work for him and us. If he succeeds, he becomes a legend, if he walks out- hes career as a coach is over.

As for us, peanuts on other sites are calling for his head. Where the stuff are we gonna find to $2.0 million+ to payout his contract. Idiots!

Second I dont remember anybody coming out saying Wallace is no good. Infact I remember all sites posters coming out almost demand our administration beat Hawthorn to Wallace!

Third, we are poo, but weve been poo for a long time! To weed out all the poo the guy needs time...lets look at wallace 4 years from now...but not now!

I actually heard David King while I was driving home and I thought to myself - Kingy you need to understand 2 very important things 1/ that we've been putting up with these sort of performances for over 20 years now and people have a right to be very disappointed and angry and 2/ that despite the anger, frustration and the feeling of embarrassment caused by Friday night's humiliation at least 20+ odd thousand tiger fans will turn up this week  :thumbsup

That is true but the Tigers can't look to the book for answers.  The answer in our case is definitly not 42 (Jeremy Humm).

You can count on Wallace walking before he gets pushed. And I reckon its OK for a coach to put his hand up and say I've given it my best shot. If Frawley had done the same, he'd have been held in higher regard. Instead he clung on.

We've seen all this for 20+ years. Wallace hasnt. The only good thing about getting smashed is that he may stop trying to balance blooding the youngsters with a mix of senior players. As far as I'm concerned, if we're going to get smashed, lets do it with a very young hungry list that will learn to hate losing. We have never succeeded in recycling senior players and trying to scrape through and knock up some wins. Our senior players are totally resigned to losing. What the **%$$# can the newbies learn alongside Tivendale and Kellaway?

If the Saints can thrive without Barry Hall, Richmond can learn to play without Richo.
