Tom Browne's "estimate" is Dusty will cop a week for the elbow and a $5000 fine for the snort/finger sledge.

Robbo's view:

DISLIKES

1. DUSTIN MARTIN

Forget the finger and the snort gestures because players torment each other in every game. The real talking points are Damien Hardwick’s plea with umpires to protect the ball players, and Martin’s errant elbow. Hardwick has a point. If the AFL is serious about clamping down on prohibited contact (cue Port’s Scott Lycett last week), then the ball winners should be paid 15 free kicks a game for the treatment they get off the ball. The checks, the elbows in the back, and the scragging all take place.

That said, Martin can’t be elbowing players off the ball. The Tigers are reeling with injuries, and Martin now faces suspension. Despite Hardwick’s defence of Martin’s elbow — “Why do you reckon he might give away that free kick?” he asked in the post-match — the coach should also be frustrated by Martin’s lack of discipline and leadership in a time of turmoil. Hardwick’s whinge should be noted, but so, too, should GWS coach Leon Cameron’s remark. “I thought Matty de Boer played a really good, fair game,’’ he said.

2. WHAT HAPPENS TO DUSTY?

The finger always attracts a fine, but that’s mostly when it’s directed at the fans. At another player is a rarity. It’s touch and go there. As for the snort gesture, surely that won’t be punished. If it was directed at Shane Mumford then remember Mumford got two weeks suspension and a $25,000 fine for snorting what is now known as a ‘’white substance’’.

This won’t be an integrity department issue and it won’t be an MRO decision, it will be one for Steve Hocking in the football department. Could you imagine if the AFL wants Martin to apologise?

Why Dustin Martin deserves to be banned

DUSTIN Martin has been a trailblazer of so much good in the past five seasons.

But this week he presents as an AFL test case for the bad.

Two incidents from the Tigers' loss to GWS at Spotless Stadium on Saturday are moments he'd like to take back, and now need proper AFL-system scrutiny and sanction. Not lip service.

The AFL tells us it loathes behind-play hits. But too often it tolerates them – remember Ben Cunnington's punch in round one?

Martin's was worse. Grainy footage of a Martin forearm making contact with a Giants player at least 80 metres off the ball should result in a minimum two-game penalty. And please, Michael Christian, don't hide behind a medical report.

The flipping of the middle finger at Shane Mumford and words clearly referencing that player's video-recorded drug use are another matter. In the eyes of some, merely a fiery moment within a competitive game. Regardless, this too requires an official and public AFL stance.

Too often, the AFL lets such matters slide, particularly when the players don't want to lay a complaint, and Mumford isn't personally seeking admonishment.

When St Kilda's Jake Carlisle and Carlton's Marc Murphy traded ugly, personal words they later regretted in a May 2017 match, the AFL weakly turned away. It should have acted then under its respect and responsibility policies, as it now needs to against Martin.

Dozens of thousands of kids idolise Martin and his every move. Those kids need to know from the AFL that it is not an action that should be seen on any football field.

Doesn't the match review dude put in his penalty day after the game. How come it's now Monday and no decision on suspension for the elbow?

Usually put out late Monday afternoon unless it was a Thursday / Friday game.

Dusty has been given 2 weeks with an early plea for that elbow.

He also has copped a $1500 fine.

Richmond star Jack Riewoldt isn't sure whether teammate Dustin Martin will be sanctioned by the AFL for his gesture to a GWS player on Saturday but there is precedent for him to escape penalty.

Martin flipped "the bird", delivered a foul-mouthed spray and accompanied that with a snorting motion during the loss to the Giants.

He was caught on camera, with the AFL investigating whether it should take action.

Hawthorn champion Sam Mitchell was involved in a similar sledging controversy in mid-2015 when he mimicked injecting himself as he had a crack at Essendon players over the drugs scandal.

He was not sanctioned by the AFL and Riewoldt says Martin's case is similar.

"I know the AFL are reviewing it at the moment," Riewoldt said. "But similar circumstances, or as similar as you could find, would be Sam Mitchell sledged a couple of the Essendon boys about the drugs saga maybe three or four years ago and he got off.

"I'm not sure, it's still under review from the AFL and Steve Hocking so no doubt we'll find out about that and talk about it tonight."

Triple Brisbane premiership player Jonathan Brown said Martin should be given a warning rather than a fine.

"The gesture wasn't great," Brown said on Nova100's Chrissie, Sam and Browny.

"This is the biggest problem – players get caught on video and sometimes on the audio saying stuff or doing stuff out on the field but it is part of the game.

"I would just send a warning out saying 'hey, we're not going to put up with this.' Just a little warning to Dusty, 'hey none of that, just cut it out boys'. A bit of common sense. People would be happy with that, wouldn't they?

"Do we really think they find Dusty $2000 that's really going to have an affect?"

‘Suck it up’: Champion’s message for Tigers star

April 8, 2019
FOX SPORTS

Richmond star Dustin Martin needs to “suck it up” and learn to cope with being tagged, says St Kilda great Nick Riewoldt.

GWS tagger Matt de Boer kept Martin goalless and to just 15 disposals in the Giants’ win over Richmond, with the Tigers midfielder involved in a number of incidents during the contest as his frustrations became evident.

Coach Damien Hardwick spoke out in defence of Martin after the match, suggesting the umpires need to better protect players being tagged.

But Riewoldt believed de Boer played within the rules and Martin needed to deal with the added attention.

“No, I don’t think so,” Riewoldt said when asked if de Boer overstepped the mark.

“We’ve all been there as players who would’ve been tagged every week as key forwards, so the mids can probably suck it up a little bit and understand what it’s like to get tagged every week.

“De Boer didn’t, I think, overstep the mark in terms of unnecessary niggle, punches behind play, hits in the back — I didn’t think there was anything over the top.”

The Tigers star is having his worst season since signing a mega-contract at the end of 2017, with Martin averaging just 21.3 disposals in three games.

In 2017, Martin averaged 29.8 disposals, 3.5 tackles and 1.5 goals per game. But the midfielder was unable to produce those numbers last season as Richmond made it all the way to the Preliminary Final.

His numbers dropped to 25.4 disposals, 2.2 tackles and 1.4 goals per game in 2018.

“The off-the-ball spray — he’s unlucky in that situation that the camera was just on him because that sort of stuff happens,” he told SEN.

“People might say ‘we don’t want to see that in our game’, well you might be right but it happens a lot out on the field.”

Dusty hit with two week ban

afl.com.au
8 April 2019

RICHMOND'S raft of injury problems have been compounded further at the Match Review, with superstar Dustin Martin copping a two-match suspension for his off-the-ball strike on Greater Western Sydney's Adam Kennedy.

In a dirty afternoon for a frustrated Martin, he caught Kennedy with an elbow to the back of his head in an incident that occurred around 100m from the ball.

It was graded by Match Review Officer Michael Christian as intentional conduct, with medium impact to the head, which will see him banned for two matches
and miss the club's games against Port Adelaide and Sydney.

Christian said the question of impact was the sticking point in extending the length of Martin's ban to two matches.

"Taking into account the visual look of the incident, the player reaction, the medical report and the potential to cause a more serious injury … we decided the appropriate grading was medium in this case," Christian told AFL.com.au's The Verdict.

Making matters worse for Martin, he was also handed a $1500 fine for striking Matt de Boer, having caught the GWS tagger with an elbow to the midriff.

He could also face further scrutiny from the AFL for a pair of untoward gestures to Giants players later in the game.
