Who's the captain? Tigers stare into black and yellow leadership hole

AFL.com.au

Apr 10, 2019

RICHMOND will be facing a leadership hole against Port Adelaide on Saturday, with captain Trent Cotchin and vice-captains Alex Rance and Jack Riewoldt all injured.

The Tigers have run with a three-man leadership group for the past three seasons and don't have a straightforward replacement with the trio on the sidelines.

Defender Nick Vlastuin appears to be the front runner for the captaincy; the 24-year-old was Vic Metro's under-18 captain in 2012 and led the side during a pre-season match in 2016.

Fellow back Dylan Grimes could also be an option, with the dependable player having won the team's past two Francis Bourke awards for demonstrating club values.

Virgin Australia AFL All Australian midfielder Shane Edwards, 30, is also a viable candidate.

Cotchin will miss up to three weeks with a hamstring injury, Riewoldt is also around three weeks away with a wrist complaint, while Rance is out for the season after undergoing a knee reconstruction.

Cotchin's injury could not have come at a worse time for the club, which has lost its past two games by 44 points (Collingwood) and 49 points (Greater Western Sydney).

Richmond has had several senior players sidelined in recent weeks, with Josh Caddy (ankle), Shaun Grigg (knee), Grimes (suspension) and Bachar Houli (hamstring) all missing.

While Caddy is likely to play his first AFL game for the season, superstar midfielder Dustin Martin will also miss due to a one-game suspension for an off-the-ball elbow to Giant Adam Kennedy's head.

Former Tiger Brett Deledio was the last player to captain Richmond in a home and away match outside of Cotchin, Rance and Riewoldt.

Deledio led the team in rounds seven and eight of 2016, while retired ruckman Ivan Maric took the reins in round 22 of 2015.

MISSING TIGERS

Jack Riewoldt (wrist, 251 games)

Trent Cotchin (hamstring, 223)

Shaun Grigg (knee, 214)

Dustin Martin (suspension, 204)

Alex Rance (knee reconstruction, 200)

MISSING IN R3 BUT IN THE MIX

Bachar Houli (hamstring, 186 games)

Josh Caddy (ankle, 139)

Dylan Grimes (suspension, 129)

Lynch tonight said he doesn't know yet who will be captain either.

No captain obvious

CHRIS CAVANAGH,
Herald Sun
10 April 2019

Richmond ruckman Toby Nankervis has dismissed the Tigers’ current injury curse as part of the game, saying the side remains confident that its system can stand up.

Richmond will be without all of its ‘Big Four’ — Trent Cotchin (hamstring), Dustin Martin (suspended), Alex Rance (knee) and Jack Riewoldt (wrist) — for its clash with Port Adelaide on Saturday.

Fellow premiership players Shaun Grigg (knee) and Jayden Short (elbow) will also miss, while veteran defender Bachar Houli (hamstring) is no certainty to return.

The Tigers are yet to name a captain for the clash, with their three-man leadership group of Cotchin, Rance and Riewoldt all missing in action.

However, Nankervis said he was confident the side had enough talent and leadership to work its way through the predicament.

“I think that’s footy, isn’t it?,” Nankervis said of the injury curse.

“There’s always injuries and you never want to see anyone get injured, let alone your own teammates. But it’s something we can’t really control.

“I think we might get a few boys back this week. And the young boys, we’re really confident in what they can do.

“It’s an opportunity for players to come in a play a role and I think we’re really confident at our footy club that it’s about our system, not so much individual players winning games for us.

“We have our captain and vice-captains but there are probably a group of seven or eight guys who are unbelievable leaders. I think our leadership is really deep at Richmond and it’s something that I’m really confident in, our leaders at the moment.”

And Grimesy is vice-captain.

Edwards to captain Richmond

By Andrew Slevison
SEN
11 April 2019

Injuries to captain Trent Cotchin and vice-captains Alex Rance and Jack Riewoldt will see Shane Edwards step into the skipper’s role for the first time.

Edwards becomes the first player to captain the Tigers outside of Cotchin, Rance and Riewoldt since Brett Deledio in 2016.

The returning Dylan Grimes will act as vice-captain for the meeting with the Power at Adelaide Oval.

“It was our leaders, they spoke about it (the decision),” said coach Damien Hardwick at today’s press conference.

“Dylan Grimes could have quite easily completed the task but our players went with Shane.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for both those boys to be captain and vice-captain, so to speak, for the next couple of weeks.”

Would Shedda be the club's first ever indigenous Captain (albeit temporarily)?  In fact, has the AFL ever had an indigenous club Captain?     :bow

Polly Farmer was Geelong's captain back in the 60s.

Wanganeen was Port's first AFL captain.

Goodes was co-captain at the Swans.

Hilarious stuff from Richmond's Dylan Grimes!

Shane Edwards will captain the Tigers this weekend because the club's entire leadership group is out injured – Trent Cotchin with a hamstring injury, Jack Riewoldt a wrist and Alex Rance tore his ACL in Round 1.

Does that make him Richmond's 'Bradbury' captain?

Grimes says yes and you wouldn't believe who the Tigers have run into at the airport ahead of their flight to Adelaide.

You can't script this stuff. Hilarious.

With Cotch likely to return this week, credit to Sheds for his role as captain in Cotch and the leadership's absence. We won 6 out of 7 while Sheds was captain.

Not only has he maintained an impressively-high level of performance this season in a new role as a rebounding half-back (averaging 22.3 disposals per match), after winning All-Australian selection for the first time in 2018, he’s also managed to galvanise the undermanned Tigers’ team.

Apparently Syd also put his hand up for the captaincy when Cotch first went down... :shh
