Chris Scott talking about us:

What have you made of Richmond’s form? It seems like the gap between its best and worst is bigger than it has been?

Maybe, but I think it highlights a couple of things, one is they don’t play at Marvel very often and their two worst performances of the year have been against the Bulldogs and on the weekend against North … the second thing is it highlights how finely tuned the competition is and if you take out some key players in any team you are going to come back to the field relatively quickly.

On Richmond as a team

They have been the best team over the last three years in my view so there is no risk of us underestimating them and in a lot of ways what they did last week is not really that relevant when you compare it to what they will probably do this week and we suspect they will play a lot better and make it really hard for us.

Geelong must be ready for fire-up Richmond

CAMERON MOONEY,
Geelong Advertiser
5 June 2019

EXPECT Richmond to respond on Friday night after its poor contest with North Melbourne.

The Tigers were so poor last week that the fact they didn’t come out in the first quarter knowing what the Roos were going to do was a little bit embarrassing.

They got absolutely bashed up around the ball, they got hunted, and I assume the big talking point this week will be their starts, because their start was really poor.

Their contested footy was poor too, so that’s going to require a huge step up against Dangerfield, Kelly and the likes through Geelong’s midfield.

Their inside-50 entries were also really poor, kicking high, long bombs, which for any forward is horrible.

Tom Lynch came under some criticism again this week and he wasn’t great against North Melbourne, but the inside-50s weren’t fantastic for him.

That’ll be a Mark Blicavs match-up, Blitz on Lynch. Blitz is arguably one of the best key defenders in the game, top two or three at worst and you could probably build a case for him being better than Jeremy McGovern at the moment.

His leadership qualities are unbelievable and he’ll be the next captain of the footy club whenever that may be, that’s how much his game has improved from a guy who was a steeplechaser.

Last Friday night, North Melbourne won the game by 17 tackles — absolutely bashed them — and it’s no coincidence the best teams are the best pressure teams.

You can always go with a team for a half or three quarters, but it’s whether Geelong can withstand that pressure for four quarters, because that’s what Richmond will bring in response to that loss.

But the shoe is on the other foot too. Can Richmond withstand what Geelong is bringing at the moment?

The Cats’ all-round pressure, the way they’re playing, is the best in the competition at the moment.

I think they’ve got so many factors driving them at the moment, Geelong, that I don’t think they’ll start poorly.

But the days of having 10-plus game winning streaks are over because the competition is so tight.

We’ve seen it over the last couple of years, any time a team gets to six, seven, eight wins, that’s generally where the winning streak ends.

That was evident for Collingwood against Fremantle and Richmond against North Melbourne.

So like the Tigers, who should have known that it was coming, you would hope the Cats know what’s going to come in that first quarter against Richmond, and hopefully they’re not asleep like Richmond were.

And this is just another great test for them on the MCG, and for me that’s probably the big factor.

It’s a test for the young guys; a big high-pressured game, the night will be dewy, so it will be a slippery and contested game.

Geelong doesn’t need another scalp, but a win would be great for confidence and reinforces to the young guys that a win on a big stage against a good team shows all the things the coaches have been talking about and preaching are working.

That would put just so much confidence through the team.

However, a loss isn’t going to be the end of the world.

I’ve always been a believer, particularly after a good winning streak, that a loss, while you don’t want them, they’re sometimes a good thing. It straightens your club up; it straightens your group up.

You may have just been covering a few gaps, because that’s what wins do. But it’s not a bad thing, particularly when you’re two games clear in the middle of the season.

Either way, the Cats really have nothing to lose, but all to gain.

Who plays on Dusty? Particularly on the weekend, Dusty spent more time forward because Cotchin came back into the side, and you saw him turn the game there with those two quick goals. When he’s in the midfield, how does Geelong work it? Do they put someone like a Cam Guthrie near him, knowing he’s going to run straight forward? I’ve got no problems with Guthrie playing back, but if the Cats want him playing midfield, there’s going to have to be a hand over. Jake Kolodjashnij or Tom Stewart would be the logical match-ups in defence. It’s going to be a fascinating watch.

MICK McGUANE,
Herald Sun
6 June 2019

GAME STYLE

Here’s what I wrote about the Cats leading into Round 1 — “I’d love to see their signature brand be ‘controlled ball movement’.

Clearly, that’s been their 2019 mode.

The coach has great admiration for Richmond — and rightly so.

He will have drummed into his players to expect the best from the Tigers tomorrow.

Damien Hardwick will preach two words — “contest” and “pressure”. On both fronts, against the best teams, pressure MUST be high and winning the contest MUST be the key.

That’s why controlling the ball is critical against Richmond.

I’m tipping a hyped-up, rebounding Tiger outfit at the MCG after such a poor showing against North last week.

Richmond will want a chaos game; Geelong will revert to controlled ball movement.

POSSESSION FOOTY

Geelong will have gone to school on Richmond’s losses this year.

The Tigers’ time in possession differential is compelling, with losses coming against Collingwood (-12.49), GWS (-7.19), Western Bulldogs (-13.46) and North Melbourne (-6.44).

On only two occasions — Port Adelaide (-7.11) and Sydney (-0.45) — have the Tigers lost the time in disposal differential and won the game.

In Round 2, the Magpies had 467 possessions (291 kicks) to the Tigers’ 302. In that game Collingwood took an astonishing 174 marks (159 uncontested).

It was a similar story in the Bulldogs’ win in Round 7 when they took 134 marks (115 uncontested).

This method takes the Tigers’ pressure game away from them.

So ball control MUST be a part of Geelong’s DNA tomorrow. The Cats have the lowest play-on percentage in the comp which is a far cry from the Mark Thompson days.

They like to be sure about what’s next, rather than playing with that reckless abandon that invites mistakes.

DIFFERENT ROUTE

What I didn’t predict in the pre-season was Geelong’s preference for boundary line ball movement from defensive 50.

The Cats have the AFL’s highest boundary line percentage from D50m — 62.7 per cent — and the least corridor percentage from D50 at 9.8 per cent.

They play safe and take fewer risks exiting from defensive 50m.

This method protects them on turnover, giving their defenders a chance to set up behind the ball.

If the ball does go over the boundary, it gives the team a chance to reset and allows their strength — “midfield dominance” — to get to work.

Tim Kelly, Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood, Mitch Duncan, Brandon Parfitt and Cam Guthrie add to their contest game.

Their ability to hunt the ground ball is strong and they have great nous to swoop on the loose footy.

So are the Cats complacent? Or are they legitimate premiership contenders?

Tonight, at the MCG, we just might get a better indication.

Tigers brace for a Cats fight

Andrew Faulkner
The Australian
June 7, 2019

A week into a winter of discontent littered with discarded coaches, broken bones and score review bungles, football mercifully reclaims the spotlight tonight as rival powerhouses collide at the MCG.

Geelong versus Richmond is just what the game needs after the season-ending injuries to Jarryn Geary and Alex Pearce and the chatter about everything other than actual football.

A win for the Cats tonight would further frank their premiership favouritism and potentially send the Tigers tumbling from the eight.

But the unsettled Tigers, who made four changes last night, will storm back into contention if they prove last week’s loss to North Melbourne was an aberration.

Geelong’s domination has Richmond coach Damien Hardwick speaking like a man in damage control.

Hardwick expects Tom Hawkins will kick goals against green defender Ryan Garthwaite, because, well, that’s what Hawkins does.

“(Garthwaite is) very competitive so he hates getting any goals kicked on him, but at 20 years of age, as a key defender, that’s going to happen,” Hardwick said at his press conference yesterday. Que sera sera.

Hardwick also volunteered that the Cats would “get hold” of the Tigers at some stage tonight.

As for blanketing Geelong’s running brigade — forget about it. The Tigers will be flat out limiting Gary Ablett’s influence, let alone all the other Geelong stars.

“Great players are great players,” Hardwick said. “We’ll manage Gary as best we can but the reality is he’s going to get touches.

“We’ve got Ablett. We’ve got (Patrick) Dangerfield. We’ve got (Tim) Kelly. We’ve got (Mitch) Duncan.”

The “we”, of course, refers to the poor Tigers charged with wresting midfield supremacy from the Cats.

That task is even more confronting given how much the Tigers were mauled in contested possessions (153 to 131) by North Melbourne last week.

“We were well off, but, to be fair, North Melbourne were outstanding,” Hardwick said.

“The Bulldogs taught us a lesson in that part of the game, as did North Melbourne. We bounced back both times.”

Only the Western Bulldogs are cleaner with their feet than Geelong. And the league leaders are the most accurate shots at goal in the competition.

So the Cats are top for a reason, Hardwick quite reasonably said. Actually, this is an understatement — they’re top for a multitude of reasons.

They’re also No 1 for goals, disposals per goal, goals per inside 50 and disposals inside 50m. To translate, they pump the ball forward a lot.

“We’ve got some challenges with regard to the way they play the game,” Hardwick said.

“They control the ball from the back half really well. They’re a bit of a slow build-up side, but they’re capable of scoring heavily in patches as well.

“There’s been patches of 10 minutes where they get hold of the opposition, so we’ve got to make sure we absorb that.”

And the best way to absorb that is to play the Richmond way — unlike last week when the sides apparently swapped jumpers before the match instead of after it.

“(North) played a very Richmond-type game,” Hardwick said. “Our group have a good understanding of what makes Richmond play at their best.

From Damian Barrett's Sliding Doors column:

IF ... I went early and ruled out a flag when Rance went down in round one only to reinstate them as a premiership chance after a six-from-seven winning sequence but then second-guessed after the bad loss to North ...

THEN ... clearly I have no idea. But we will all get to know where the Tigers are at after the game against Geelong.
