I'm guessing we'd be hoping that a significant number of members will be happy for the Club to keep the money as a donation or in lieu of some extra recognition reward in the future when this is all over.

Sounds like a plan

Yeah we're already going to vote for him mate, you don't need to keep selling it.....

Mark Stevens on Ch7 news last night said (some?) clubs are refunding memberships to those claiming hardship.

If your living in hardship you probably shouldnt be spending money on footy memberships anyway. $200 doesnt send anyone into poverty.

You just don't get it. $200 does put food on the table though doesn't it? Helps pay the mortgage

Remember most of the govt allowances haven't started being paid yet

Don't think any of us have the right to pot people who are making choices for the betterment of their families, their lives.

And I do know a couple of folks who have contacted the club and ask that their monthly pay, ants stop for now

Im not potting anyone. I just have a view that if money is tight within a family they probably wouldnt spend money on football memberships but i could be wrong.

Eddie on Footy Classifield said clubs would go under if there was a run on the clubs by people wanting their memberships reimbursed.

i agreed with Tony Jones 100%.  Eddie was dancing around the question in fear of a run on for those seeking refunds.

Each to their own. I wont be, but have no issue if any member does. Its not anyones fault but the AFL proping up duds like saints north and suns for many years, now in their time of need are asking us for a favor.

Understood the club is a different beast to the afl, but maybe the clubs should have stood firm instead of agreeing to expansion and agreeing to continual aid given to these clubs.

Gillon McLachlan confirms AFL club membership refunds

ABC
2 April 2020

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan has confirmed that club members will be refunded if they need to be but implored those who could afford to continue paying for their membership to do so, to support their club.

McLachlan said he understood the plight of clubs who had already been forced to cut approximately 80 per cent of their staff.

"Those for whom the footy club is almost part of their family, if they're able to maintain their membership and keep going, it will go a long way to getting their clubs through this and that's Ed's point. I think it is important and you've got to marry the two priorities up," McLachlan said.

"Clearly the footy clubs rely on club membership and for those who have been making a contribution because of that connection and that loyalty for such a long time, if they're able to keep their membership it goes a long way to keeping the club sustainable."

so you are an afl member too, and have no issue with the afl keeping it? or are you referring to the club one?

each to their own, not going to bag anyone for taking either stance. I would find it odd if anyone let the AFL (not club) keep their hard earned money given what they do with the profits from the competition. I have zero sympathy for those scum bags.

MCC considers membership refund debate

Scott Spits
The Age

The Melbourne Cricket Club faces a looming dilemma about possible membership refunds should the coronavirus crisis wipe out hope of AFL fans attending MCG matches before the end of August.

As debate heats up about whether supporters can and should be able to request a partial or whole refund from their club for the 2020 season, MCC members are in a different position given their annual membership dues were paid for a 12-month period that began at the start of last September.

In that time, MCC members have had access to AFL finals, Big Bash League matches and international cricket including the first Boxing Day cricket Test between Australia and New Zealand at the MCG in more than 30 years.

In a message to MCC members after the AFL announced the 2020 season was suspended, president Michael Happell said the MCC was unable to give clarity about potential refunds or returns to members if additional events and games scheduled for the event are cancelled.

"The global COVID-19 pandemic is still evolving and until the club can understand the full impact it will have on the 2020 AFL premiership season, we're not in a position to give an answer at this time," Happell wrote.

"We will keep members updated as the situation continues to unfold."

An MCC spokesperson said the club was getting a lot of queries from members via social media but due to the overall uncertainty of coronavirus no further decisions had been reached.

"People have gotten value out of their memberships so far," the spokesperson said.

The club also has to factor into their considerations that even if the AFL is able to resume at some point, matches might again be played in crowd-less stadiums with only key personnel – players, club officials, ground staff and media – able to attend.

The MCC said members who had purchased daily reserved seats or visitor tickets for AFL matches originally scheduled between rounds two and 11 would be contacted by Ticketek.

"Whilst the AFL has suspended the AFL premiership season until at least May 31, the situation regarding the impact of COVID-19 is still evolving. As such we will continue to keep members informed regarding future games as details emerge," Happell said.
