Following Saturday night's 46-point loss West Coast at Subiaco Oval, Richmond coach Terry Wallace believes his side must cut down on skill errors and hinted that certain players could face the chop in the future if they didn't make better use of the ball.

Richmond got off to a promising start against West Coast, booting three of the first four goals of the match and only trailed the home side by 13 points at the main break, but Wallace believed the third quarter, in which the Tigers conceded eight goals, was the gamebreaker.

"I thought in the third quarter we had a couple of chronic turnovers (and) that becomes costly," he said.

"Good sides will (punish) you and when you make a mistake, it ends up going back and goes through for a goal and (that) sort of multiplies the error quite significantly.

"But credit to them (West Coast), their pressure was excellent."

Wallace hinted that changes could be on the way to accommodate players who can take care of the ball.

"From our aspect we've got to keep turning our list over until we can get blokes who can use the footy … and that's no secret to anyone," Wallace said.

"Young blokes who can't use the footy in this day and age are not going to have long careers in the game, (so) we'll just keep working on that aspect and keep trying to find guys who can do it."

But Wallace acknowledged the young list at his disposal probably wouldn't make a world of difference even if changes were made.

"We've got a young list … we've got thirty players under 24-years of age, so we're very young. That's where we're going so what comes in (will) probably not (make) a lot of difference than what goes out with relation to experience."

It was a tough break for Tom Roach - son of Richmond legend Michael Roach - who had to be taken to hospital with a suspected broken jaw. Wallace said "it looks like it might be a crack in the jaw".

"We haven't had much luck with our young brigade at the moment," he said.

Darren Gaspar came off with a hamstring strain, but Wallace said it all depended on "just how he pulls up in the next few days".

Richmond takes on Brisbane next Saturday night at the 'Gabba.

Sounds like Tezza after a year and a bit looking at our list has had enough of the turnovers, most of them coming from senior players. We need another clean out and 3 more years of good drafting which will take us to the end of Wallace's 5-year contract before we get our list right.

Wallace gives Tigers reality check

RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace has been brutally honest with his team after a 20.16 (136) to 14.6 (90) thumping by West Coast Eagles at subiaco Oval.

And he also warned Tigers fans not to expect any miracles from the recovering Nathan Brown.

"I have said to the blokes then, we have just got to keep turning our list over until we get blokes who can use the footy," said Wallace.

"That is no secret to anyone – blokes who can't use the ball in this day and age are not going to have long careers in the game.

"We'll just keep working on that aspect and keep trying to find blokes who can do it.

"Some guys have got to understand if they can't reach the levels of AFL footy then their careers are in jeopardy when they're not in a successful senior team."

With Matthew Richardson kicking four and Shane Tuck collecting 28 touches, Wallace pointed to young Tigers such as Richard Tambling as the future.

"There is a lack of genuine quality in the line up at this stage, and some of the quality is either not in or very young that is in," he said.

"But eventually you have got to put the young guys in who have the ability to use the ball ... who are going to get better every time they play, rather than blokes who make the same errors.

 "If guys keep making the same errors eventually they have got to make their way out of the side."

RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace has vowed to sift through his squad until he discovers players capable of displaying a skill level sufficient for survival at AFL level.
 
Wallace watched in frustration as his charges butchered fistsful of possessions in Saturday night's 46-point loss to West Coast at Subiaco Oval.

The Eagles punished Richmond severely on turnovers.

"There is still a lack of skill within the structure of the team (with) just our inability to hit targets as well as the opposition did," Wallace said.

"One in every three of our kicks was a turnover. That's massive numbers and I've just spoken to the guys and sort of said we have to keep turning our list over until we get blokes who can use the footy. Blokes who can't use the ball in this day and age aren't going to have long careers in the game. We'll just keep working on that aspect to keep trying to find guys who can do it."

Wallace said the Tigers, who are winless after three rounds ahead of a trip north to tackle Brisbane, wouldn't continue to tread water.

"I think being where we have been over the last two or three years, there is probably a lack of genuine quality in the line-up at this stage. Some of the quality is either not in or very young that is in," he said.

"Richard Tambling was much better tonight and I was quite pleased with his efforts and you've just got to go to guys like that. Some guys have got to understand that if they can't reach the levels of AFL footy, their careers are in jeopardy."

Has to make tough decisions end of this year coz it will be his 2nd year as coach - he'll need atleast 2 years to develop that group...so end of this year i think we'll see big decisions. Wallace knows if he doesnt succeed at RFC hes coaching career is just about over. Hes not dumb, jhe'll get rid of the blokes who cant play before they get rid of him.

Agree Ramps. Wallace has had 18 months to have a good hard look at the list from close up and anyone who isn't up to it or hasn't improved over that time particularly with foot skills should be sent bye-byes. That still gives him 3 years left to get (another) 60 games into our talented kids. By then they should be ready to fire.

dont worry guys, players like gaspar, tiv, etc, are gonr. terry isnt silly, he promoted gas to the leadership group just to lift his profile. its a shame thursfield and shulz are injured, they are better vallue than defenders like gas and kellaway. we would have beaten the saints if thursfield didnt get injured , thats no secret as he killed riewolt
