AFL 2020 predictions: Every club's pass mark for this season

Tom Naghten
Sporting News

So what will be considered a success for your club in 2020?

We've given each club a pass mark for the upcoming season, now bear in mind, just like at school, not everyone will make the grade.

Richmond - Qualify for the grand final

We were going to have a top two finish as the pass mark for the Tigers but as they've shown in 2017 and last season, third is more than enough for them to win the flag.

In fact, in 2018 when they won the minor premiership, they were dumped out in the prelim.

Alex Rance has retired but Dylan Grimes proved last year that he's more than capable of leading the back six, while the likes of Marlion Pickett and Sydney Stack will only get better.

It's a lofty goal but when you've been the benchmark at the business end of the year for the past three seasons.

Minor premiership, major premiership, Lynch Coleman, Dusty Brownlow + Norm Smith, Rance return, another 3 rising star nominees, RCD to win rising star, VFL premiership, and belt the daylights out of Geelong + Collingwood + West Coast in the 3 finals.

RICHMOND

It’s pretty easy to outline the pass mark for the 2019 premiers, with another Grand Final appearance beckoning as Damien Hardwick’s men continue to impress. There will be a number of selection headaches at the club, as youngsters Sydney Stack and Jack Ross bang the door down after missing out on the Grand Final. Jack Riewoldt only played 13 games last season – so expect his craft alongside key forward Tom Lynch to cause damage to opposition teams down back. The Tigers are hungry to create a dynasty and if they can claim their third premiership in four years, Swan Street will certainly be humming come that last Saturday in September.

I know it’s a praccy match but none of our kids impressed
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Sorry, I dont agree with you

Baker has just turned 22 & was probably our best

Dow went ok according to Dimma & is clearly a kid @ 18

Syd was impressive in 2nd half & at 19 is still a kid

21 year old Garthwaite also impressed Dimma as did 20 year old CJ

Thought Ross was solid apart from his forward entries and he was hardly alone on that score....hell Grigg used to serve that crap up every week playing outside under minimal pressure and was praised to the skies by some.... :shh

Top 4 is a pass any year. Finals can be a total crap shoot with injuries home away grounds, etc.

Every AFL club's make or break for 2020

2020 pass mark: A Grand Final berth

It's almost tempting to say a premiership is a pass mark for the Tigers, such has been their recent dominance and the fact they're possibly looking even stronger than last year: Grand Final star Marlion Pickett will benefit from a first proper AFL preseason, while Tom Lynch may become even scarier after entering 2019 on the back of significant knee surgery.

But as impressive as Richmond's personnel is, it's their gameplan that's so imposing. Few teams are able to quell the 'Tiger Tidal Wave' that so often overwhelms all before it, especially on the wide expanses of the MCG.

Everyone knows a week is a long time in footy, let alone looking ahead to September, but it's difficult to not to see Richmond at least featuring on Grand Final Day.

What all 18 clubs need to do to get a pass mark in 2020

RICHMOND

If two out of three ain’t bad then three out of four is pretty darn good. But only great teams achieve things like that and the Tigers will need to be just that in what promises to be a strange old season.

Not winning the flag would not be seen as an enormous failure given there are two new ones at Punt Road but the ultimate success is quickly becoming the new expectation. As much as the Tiger faithful would be yearning for a third premiership in quick succession, they must be appreciative that they are very hard to win and just to again be at the pointy end will be a challenge in itself.

The hunter is certainly now the hunted and just maintaining the side’s overall quality be the focus. The rest, as Damien Hardwick says, will take care of itself.

Pass mark: Maintain excellence. Make another Grand final.
