The rookie list conundrum Richmond will face

By Sammy Edmund

Richmond is facing a rookie list dilemma as it grapples with a way to shield its talent-laden playing list from poachers.

The Tigers’ enviable depth in the face of injury has this year caught the eye of rivals sensing an opportunity to pick off players seeking more opportunity and/or better terms.

Richmond have the maximum six Category A rookies in 2020 – Jake Aarts, Liam Baker, Mabior Chol, Derek Eggmolesse-Smith, Marlion Pickett and Sydney Stack – and all are currently regulars in coach Damien Hardwick’s best 22.

Three of those rookies – Aarts, Pickett, Eggmolesse-Smith – are out of contract. Under AFL rules, players who have been on the rookie list for two years or more can reject another rookie contract and become unrestricted free agents.

But if rookie list spots are cut next year, as expected, it would put Richmond under enormous pressure to make room for its rookies on its primary list, which is capped at 40 in 2020 but is no certainty to remain so next season.

Senior-listed players Jack Graham, Nathan Broad and the yet-to-debut Riley Collier-Dawkins are also without deals for next year and attracting interest from multiple clubs.

Collier-Dawkins was the Tigers’ first pick (No. 20) in the 2018 national draft, but is yet to be given an opportunity.

Oleg Markov and Toby Nankervis are unsigned for 2021 – the latter battling a syndesmosis injury as the emerging Ivan Soldo holds the fort.

Graham is in demand at a number of clubs, including Adelaide and Essendon, while Broad has been one of many who have taken less and would need to keep doing so if he wants to stay. Bachar Houli is on one-year deals.

Richmond list manager Blair Hartley is the man at the steering wheel. Such is the depth of talent at Punt Road he may as well be steering the Titanic.

The Tigers are among a collection of clubs who have put the shutters up on contract talks as the industry awaits the AFL’s verdict on what the list sizes and the salary cap looks like for next year.

But with only eight weeks until the end of the season, Hartley has got some big decisions to make.

The likes of Dan Butler, Brandon Ellis and Reece Conca have been among the departures in recent years.

This is the path multiple premiership-winning sides must travel. Who falls out this year?

Remember 15 years ago when we could but dream of being in this position.

Emergency-Dawkins to be traded as steak knives without playing a game.... :shh

Would prefer to keep both Graham and Broad, however our list build is such we have ample players to step in to play their roles within the team.
Should they leave for greater a salary and long term contracts, they leave Premiership heroes!!

English, Naish, Miller should all go off primary list. Maybe Turner also. A mistake drafting Biggy. Should have held that pick for rookie draft. Now have to carry him for 2 years. Markov, Ross and Higgo will be lucky to survive

Houli will retire

Graham, Broad and CCJ traded

That means we can elevate 5 of the 6 rookies + 3 picks. Baker, Aarts, Chol and Pickett definitely elevated. One of Stack or Egg miss out unless Garth pulls pin also

Why can’t we delist Big? He would go first, then EGG, trade Graham, Houli retire,  and also Soldo.

That would be a very bad move letting CCJ And Dawkins go.

Lots of fodder to get off the list and make way for our rookies.

But those 3 - Pickett, DES and Aarts...honestly I don't mind if DES goes. Pickett no big deal either. Need to keep Aarts for the moment.

Baker, Chol and Stack will all find spots on the list with Aarts.

Turner, English, Garth, Miller, Naish are all pretty much surplus.

Wasn’t English one of our best performers in the vfl last year? Was either turner or English.

Stack and Baker are certainties to get a spot on the main list.

CCJ should be a 100% must keep too.

And I would keep Graham and Broad as I think they have earned the right to stay.

Houli to retire.

Rance will be off the list too.

The following are replaceable IMO.
Pickett, Egg, Aarts, Naish, Chol, Garthwaite, English, Turner, Miller

But I’d like to keep Pickett if possible.

I wonder about Astbury. Only because a 4-6 week medial injury has become a 8+ weeks.

He had knee problems in the early part of his career. He's going to be 30 at the start on next season, not saying he should retire just wondering if it is a possibility?

Turner.

Has he been close to debut at any point?

What role is he playing?
