Anyone got a clue, because i haven't

Anyone got a clue as to why players like Hyde, Tuck and Pettifer have come on over the last year?  I had virtually all of them written off before Wallace and Co. came along.  But after hearing a commentator say Petts was the second most important player on our forward line behind Richo, made me do a double-take.

Even Rainsey has seen dramatic improvement, even though he hasn't had as long as the others and was really still just a kid last year.  But his attitude, his physique, the way he is attacking the ball and contests, is so dramatically different from last year.

Except for Raines, I doubt any of those players would still be on our list if Frawley was still there, so we may have missed out on something special if they had have been dropped.  Lucky there were plenty of others who were worse than them that saw them continue their careers.  Could other careers have been salvaged if they had have been coached under Wallace?

Is it Wallace, Royal, or something else?  I’d like to think we’ve now got the right people down there developing our kids, but even that I can’t put a finger on as to why this improvement has taken place. Is there something more specific?

What was so surprising was the change in these players was so dramatic and so quick.  Why is this so?

Any ideas, ppl?  Someone or some group of people down there are making quite a difference and i am rapt.

It is all about self belief and the coaches ability to nurture that from within the players mind to bring out the obvious talent than caught the eye of the recruiter in the first place.

Tuck is an easy one to explain - Spud wouldn't play him no matter how well he was doing at Coburg nor how poorly the seniors were doing  >:(. He just needed a chance to prove himself and Wallace gave him that break. If Frawley was still coach (god forbid) we'd still have Fleming on our list :help.

Hydey's problem was definitely confidence. Everytime he use to run out on the ground under Spud he would always chip it to Cambo and let him make the play. Just no self-belief whatsoever. Of course Spud's backwards-sideways grinding gameplan didn't help. Hyde has surprisingly good pace to break the lines (a la his goal in the 2nd quarter on friday night) and Wallace's run and carry gameplan allows him to use that pace.

Pettifer IMO is maturity  ;) and a change of attitude as he always had natural ability. He needed to put in the hard work. I won't blame Spud for that one as he Kayne started to show something in Spud's last 3 months across HB.

Rainesy is just all class like his old man  :thumbsup.

I think it comes down to respect for the coach.

Frawley lost many players in that area.

TW has regained it as he is a fantastic communicator and has obviously got through to a few of those players like hyde and pettifer and bringing out the improvement.

Hyde's form is just impressing me more each week.

We still have a long way to go but compared to the season 2004 debacle we are travelling a lot better in terms of our style of play and a more attacking and positve gameplan.

Start with the coach and then work your way through all the changes he’s introduced.

We haven’t really played any great looking footy so far (hopefully we’ve all got some hair left), but there just seems to be a lot more purpose and resolve about the players and there would be a few reasons for that.

The biggest difference, by far, is that the mindset of the coaches is always positive and proactive.  So, regardless of what happens, on or off the field, whether we win or not, there’s not the ‘bunker’ mentality we’ve had in the past, when things have gone a bit haywire.  Helps when you have a coach who has faith in his own ability.  If you haven’t got that then say your prayers.

You’d almost have to think that, regardless of their natural ability, if players aren’t able to improve, in some way, in this sort of environment then there’s no helping them. The striking thing, for me, is that not only are we seeing improvement in individual players, but also getting better as a team.  And my battered and scarred mind appreciates any amount of improvement, regardless of how small it may seem.  The team will still continue to be inconsistent, but at least we can see the difference in the way we play now, and also where we’re going, compared to the past.

In previous seasons, to me it’s always seemed as though a bunch of individuals were out there playing footy.  But now, you can at least see something like a team emerging.  Hopefully it’s for real this time.

There are probably a whole lot of reasons for that as well, and not just one simple answer.  Giving players greater responsibility and allowing them to have some input into games means they have to think about what happens in matches.  Before, during and after.  I don’t think that’s happened in the past, to the same level and degree as now.  Instead it’s always seemed that players tried to carry out a game plan without the involvement and responsibility they now have towards each game.  How could any player hope to improve or learn the way things used to be?

Probably a weird way of trying to explain something, and sorry if it don’t make sense, but it’s almost like Dennis Cometti’s view of the game last Friday night, where he felt the pace of the game didn’t allow him time to absorb parts of the match.  Instead he felt it was like he’d gone through the take away drive through and had his food thrown at him.  Most people like to have time to digest their food, as well as a game of footy; which is fair enough.

That’s probably how you could describe our coaching in the past; where it mostly seemed to be thrown at the players, rather than involving them and making them think about the game, which could then provide them with a greater sense of responsibility for their role in the team.

Basically, I think the current methods give players a better appreciation of the end result.  And would also help build confidence in them, because they can gain a better understanding and appreciation of what they are supposed to be doing, and why.  Giving players this sort of responsibility and involvement provides for greater motivation as well.  But the coach giving them the confidence to take on any role is as big a factor as any.  We’ve only just started really, but so far I’d say I’m rapt too. :yep

I agree with Tiger Spirit. It is not just one thing but a combination of a series of little things building on each other. First thing Wallace did was get the coaching and recruiting structure right with talented people. Then he went about changing the mind set of the players.

One thing he did early on last year was to say to a hestiant Deledio just get the ball and run and fast. Lids did that and mess up a couple of times but then it clicked and wa la look at his run with Judd on his tail a few weeks ago. This is just one small thing but TW can then use it as an example for someone like Hyde telling him run with the ball and if you mess up it is ok as long as you learn. So Hyde tries it a few times then gets it right.

Just small points but if you can change the self belief of a few individuals then the rest will follow and then the team's belief in themselves and most important in each other rises.

We have only just started on our journey but things are gathering pace. I am so excited   :gotigers
