AFL finally announces 2021 list sizes and salary cuts

Justin Chadwick
AAP
Saturday, 21 November 2020

A new collective bargaining agreement has been put in place for the 2021 AFL season, with primary lists to be cut to 38 and player payments also reduced.

The variation for 2021 will see a reduction in Everything Paid to Players and the AFL Player’s Association (EPP&A) of 10 per cent, which includes a decrease in the Total Player Payments and Additional Services Agreement Limits for 2021 of nine per cent.

But because list sizes will also be reduced, it means individual players who are retained will have their pay cut in the vicinity of 3.5 per cent instead of nine per cent.

The total player payments for each club will be $12.1 million for the 2021 season, and the Additional Services Agreement Limit will be $1.09 million.

Each club must have a minimum of 37 players and a maximum of 44 players on their list, taking in all categories.

The primary list must have no less than 36 players and no more than 38 players.

The maximum number of Category A rookies will be four, five, or six depending on the number of primary list players. The maximum sum across those two lists can’t exceed 42.

Each club will be allowed a maximum of two category B rookies.

Funding for programs and services supporting players, including wellbeing, player development and the injury and hardship fund, remain unchanged.

Given the uncertainty of the impact COVID-19 will have on next season, the AFL and AFLPA have also agreed to a system for 2021 where players will share in the financial upside should actual industry football revenue exceed the AFL’s current forecast.

They will also share in a reduced amount should total industry revenue be lower than the AFL forecasts.

Under the revised agreement, the AFL and AFLPA have also agreed to establish a working party to explore future revenue generation opportunities such as a revised fixture and revised rules regarding independent agreements and commercial restrictions for players.

Don't see Baker and Pickett remaining as rookies given they are dual premiership players. Surely they will be promoted.

That will still allow 3 National draft picks including MRJ.

So that would lead to 38 senior listed players: current 33 plus Baker, Pickett, MRJ, pick 17 and pick 36.

4 Cat-A rookies: Aarts, Chol, Stack plus rookie pick 18.

2 Cat-B rookies: Eggy, Colina.

Agree with Dio in that I wouldn't mind rookie-ing Fraser Turner.

Will we be lucky enough to get MRJ without sacrificing 17 or 36 do you think?

Elsewise the rest sounds on point to me.
Callum Twomey on the AFL website reckons MRJ is unlikely to receive a bid  :pray.

A number of other aligned players, including father-sons – Luke Edwards (Adelaide), Taj Schofield (Port Adelaide) and Maurice Rioli Jnr (Richmond) – are unlikely to attract bids until later or potentially go through as rookies.

Just as aside, we may leave that last rookie spot free and use the supplementary list (a la Stack). See how kids overlooked in the draft perform when they return to playing competitive footy again.

First list lodgment due today

Wonder if we will make anymore changes?

Looks like I was wrong

First list ligament I'd this coming Friday 27th not lat Friday 20th

Apologies

Noting the change to rules about transferring players to the Rookie List.

"The AFL advised teams on Tuesday night that up to two players could be transferred straight from their 2020 senior list to the rookie list for next season.

The move is set to help clubs looking to reduce their senior list after it was confirmed a nine per cent salary cap reduction would be in place for 2021."

https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-rule-change-gives-clubs-extra-flexibility-with-list-ahead-of-draft/news-story/14b35e35a8e0ef797efc33aa5bff1df5#:~:text=The%20AFL%20advised%20teams%20on,be%20in%20place%20for%202021.

This would mean that we could move Garthwaite and Miller to the Rookie List replacing Baker and Picket without delisting them, which is the normal procedure when demoting a player.
Previously a player would be delisted prior to the draft allowing an opposition club to bid on them for their senior list before they went to the Rookie draft.

There was some talk of St Kilda enquiring about Garthwaite.
A phone call to them would see if their interest was real and if so Garth would be delisted allowing them to draft him. Otherwise direct to our Rookie List.
List lodgement will show how this stands.

Tigers confirm list changes

By Richmond Media - Just now

Key defender Ryan Garthwaite and versatile tall Ben Miller will remain at Richmond for the 2021 season.

Garthwaite, 22, put pen to paper on a one-year deal with the Club, while Miller has been retained via a new AFL rule which allows clubs to place up to two primary listed players straight onto the rookie list without going through the NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

The 192cm Garthwaite will enter his fifth year at the Club after originally being selected with pick No. 72 overall at the 2016 NAB AFL Draft.

Garthwaite did not appear at senior level in 2020 but has played nine AFL games across his four years at Richmond. The rugged defender has stood out with his trademark desperation, leadership, and an excellent work rate at both AFL and VFL level.

“Ryan is an extremely popular and hardworking member of our group,” said Richmond General Manager- Football Talent, Blair Hartley.

“2020 was a difficult year for players outside of the team, Ryan endured through some injuries but still played an important role in driving high standards.

“We look forward to seeing him continue to improve next year.”

Miller, 21, has spent three seasons at Richmond, playing mainly as a key defender. The utility was also used in the ruck during scrimmage matches this year, where he impressed coaches.

“Ben is a young tall continuing to develop across a number of roles.” Hartley said.

“He showed some real development this year – starting down back before showing some growth in the ruck and pushing forward during the scrimmages on the Gold Coast.

“We are excited to be able to keep him at the club and look forward to seeing him continue to progress next year.”

Richmond has also informed Derek Eggmolesse-Smith that he will not be offered a contract for 2021. Eggmolesse-Smith played eight games for the Tigers after being drafted in the 2018 Rookie Draft as a Next Generation Academy selection.

Hartley thanked Eggmolesse-Smith for his hard work and dedication. “We wish Derek well in his playing career and all of his future endeavours.”

The 2020 NAB AFL National Draft will be held virtually on December 9, with the NAB AFL Rookie Draft to follow on December 10.
