#48 is Josh Green. From the bits I have watched he looks OK
Agree. Green had a really good 2nd qtr.

Out of the remaining four trainees with us it's between Green & Eggy for the final spot. Eggy had a good 2nd qtr too running off HB. Gallucci looks too slow while Couroupis hasn't done much.

Liked the look of #26 (Cam Olden - thanks taz) from our VFL-listers.

Dow again hits up a teammate inside 50. But #34 misses.

Pickett intercepts the kick-in 55 out. Bombs it down town and through for a goal.

Final Score (3 qtrs)

Richmond   2.4   8.4    11.5-71
Melbourne  2.0   3.2      6.3-39

Goals: M.Rioli jnr 2, Naish, Pickett, Coleman-Jones, Green, Gallucci, #12, #26 (Olden), #34. #36 (Melville).

Ressies had a comfortable and dominant win given we had to kick twice into the breeze across the 3 qtrs.

Dow was our best IMV.
Eggy was next.
Maurice jnr was much much better in this game than in the intra-club. Will have a lot of our supporters excited after seeing today's effort.
Thought Biggie did well in defence.
Pickett loves to turn it on late in games.
You would have CCJ ahead of Ryan based on today's game. Thought Ryan was disappointing compared to the intra-club hitout.

Cam Olden (#26) was the most impressive of our VFL-listed players.

Articles about the seniors game:

Big Max dominates, fringe forward fires, Dusty finishes early

By Callum Twomey
afl.com.au
26 February 2021

MELBOURNE'S ruck partnership of Max Gawn and Luke Jackson got another tick on Friday, with the pair combining to help the Demons overcome Richmond in their practice match.

Gawn was best on ground, with the Demons skipper steering his side to its 11-point win at Casey Fields. The four-time All-Australian showed he had lost none of his touch with a standout showing working in tandem with a noticeably more athletic and stronger Jackson ahead of his second AFL season.

Having Jackson in stints in the ruck also allowed Gawn to drift into attack, where he kicked two goals and offered a marking target in the Dees' injury-hit forward line. The score at the end of the fourth term was 14.9 (93) to 12.10 (82)

The clubs broke their game into seven periods, with Melbourne sticking with its first-choice line-up for the first four periods before a largely youth and development squad played out the remainder.

The Tigers stuck with a largely unchanged squad for the same time however they subbed in a group of fresh players into the match in the fourth term, with superstar Dustin Martin, defender David Astbury and midfielder Shane Edwards among those to finish early after reaching their planned game time. Two-time premiership player Marlion Pickett played in the second match.

Young Demon Kyle Chandler pressed his claims for a round one berth with three goals across the game, while Bayley Fritsch also kicked three. Veteran Nathan Jones, playing mainly as a half-forward, chipped in with two, while gun midfielders Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver were dominant.

Tom McDonald, who was on the trade table in last year's exchange period, played as a key forward for the Dees and kicked one major.

Jack Riewoldt and Jake Aarts both kicked two goals for the Tigers, who controlled the game early but allowed Melbourne to hit back with a five-goal third term, with the Demons holding onto the lead thereafter. Fellow Tigers forwards Mabior Chol and Shai Bolton also competed well.

Young guns
Hardwick is enthusiastic about the young Tigers developing at the club and he gave a couple of them an opportunity on Friday. Hugo Ralphsmith, noticeably baulked up in his second season at Richmond, was solid off half-back and is being groomed as a potential Bachar Houli replacement of the future, while Will Martyn spent time in the middle, including in the centre square.

Switching positions
Josh Caddy resumed his post on the wing for the Tigers and had an impact, also pushing forward to kick a goal in the third term.

Injury watch
Both teams appeared to get through the game unscathed. The Tigers were without Daniel Rioli (ankle), Kane Lambert (hip), Dion Prestia (hamstring) and Bachar Houli (calf), while a big bump floored Riley Collier-Dawkins in last week's intra-club but he is expected to be available for the AAMI Community Series.

Fantasy tempters
Richmond youngster Jack Ross will also be one to watch at the other end of the price spectrum. Ross is set for more midfield time and has plenty of fans at Punt Road so should be tracked carefully.

Dees’ old issue returns, Tiger cubs pushing for R1: What we learned from Melbourne v Richmond

Melbourne and Richmond put on a scoring show at Casey Fields.

David Zita
Fox Sports
February 26th, 2021

Melbourne did enough to hold Richmond at bay in an entertaining 11-point win at Casey Fields on Friday, finishing 14.9 (93) winners over the reigning premiers, 12.10 (82).

Despite the result, the Tigers proved they’re still going along just fine after winning back-to-back flags, while the Dees showed just how damaging they can be against some of the game’s top sides.

With the match done and dusted and one more pre-season hitout to come, here are the key takeaways for both sides.

DEES’ ‘RED MIST’ KICKS INTO OVERDRIVE ... FOR BETTER OR WORSE

While the Dees were lacking some big names up forward, they were pretty well set in defence, which may’ve made some of Richmond’s transition a bit alarming for Simon Goodwin, even though their scoring power proved crucial to the win.

In recent times it has been Melbourne’s points conceded from forward half turnovers that has been a source of dismay for Dees fans, with the club ranking 17th in the stat last year, something only amplified by the fact they ranked 18th for forward half turnovers.

More than once during Friday’s game a Dees foray forward quickly turned to rapid counterattack for the Tigers.

On the plus side for Melbourne, those surges forward did lead to some damaging strings of goals when coupled with the Casey Fields breeze - with Richmond CEO Brendon Gale noting during the match the opposition was “noticeably quicker” as an outfit while Sam Weideman said there had been added emphasis on attack in the build up to the season.

Also a positive for the Dees is that, while their weaknesses may be similar, their strengths in sheer star power remain imposing - Max Gawn was dominant across the ground, Christian Petracca worked his way into the game and Clayton Oliver was right amongst it in the middle.

Importantly, all three hit the scoreboard, with Gawn having a chance to kick a bag if not for some wayward goalkicking.

It’s a fine balance that Goodwin will need to balance - and seemed to in getting the win on Friday.

PICKETT’S NOTABLE ABSENCE

As Hugo Ralphsmith made himself at home on the wing during the ‘A’ game on Friday, Marlion Pickett was listed for a run in the twos before coming on in the fourth term heading into game ‘B’.

Two flags from 20 games at AFL level is something Pickett will never forget, but his place in the side during 2020 wasn’t guaranteed and his absence from the top-level scratch match could be a sign he still has some work to do ahead of the season proper.

Pickett’s future isn’t in jeopardy - he signed a two-year extension at the end of last year - but his immediate prospects of senior selection aren’t as set in stone as they may’ve been at the start of last year’s successful premiership tilt.

For his part, Ralphsmith showed promise and his willingness to run during stints on the wing and in the backline.

The team sheets for the AAMI Community Series match with Collingwood next Friday will be intriguing as far as Pickett’s involvement is concerned.

You’d suspect Damien Hardwick would back in Pickett, but the Tigers have thrived on the ‘one soldier out another soldier in’ mentality in recent years.

JAKE AARTS WAS STIFF TO MISS OUT ON A FLAG

The meteoric rise of Jake Aarts took an unfortunate turn at the backend of the 2020 season when the 26-year-old goalsneak was dropped after the first final and missed out on a crack at the flag.

His performance on Friday morning proved he was mighty stiff to lose his spot, as the crafty forward booted three goals, the most of any Tiger, and looked dangerous whenever the ball was brought to ground in the forward 50.

There’s no shortage of competition for spots as a pressure forward in the Richmond lineup, but Aarts’ performance was surely enough to reaffirm to Damien Hardwick that he belongs in the seniors to start the year.

Hopefully for him, he’s there at the pointy end of the season this time around.
