How did Ben Miller go? I have high hopes for him becoming a quality key defender at our club. Id debut him next week. Astbury to go out.

Out of the two ruck forwards I had Chol as the superior player all round.

Chol did a clearly better job in the ruck.
Chol took more contested type marks compared to the leading CCJ.
Chol did better at chasing down opponents and tackling pressure.
Chol made more efforts to help out his defence whilst playing ruck.
I’d like to how many goal assists Chol had as I think he was more instrumental in setting up goals.

Now I’m not saying CCJ had a bad game as he was very very good. But I’m just comparing the game I say today and from today’s game I had Chol as second best player on the ground and all round better than CCJ on the day.
The club that keeps giving.

Out of the two key defenders Biggie had more influence down there.
Miller was good and I liked his kicking and his decision making out of defence. Biggie seemed to be more noticeable. It’s hard to judge because I have no clue of the quality of their respective forwards.

Will Martyn got plenty of the footy but his skills are very very poor. And his tackling is very sloppy gave away a few free kicks.

Noah Cumberland another who can’t kick atrocious skill.

Caddy was clearly BOG and is way to good for this level.

McDonagh looks a player. Dow did some good things in the middle.

MRJ looks a very very exciting prospect. His tackling is AFL quality but he also has smarts and super skill.
Eggs had a solid game. Stack looked ok but wasn’t involved enough.
The club that keeps giving.

Remember when you are picking between Chol and CJ their forward play should be the deciding factor as nank will still ruck 75% of the time. Their goal kicking, lead up play and contested marking should imo be what brings them into the team and for me CJ is superior in that regard. Also chol has had plenty of chances at AFL level whereas CJ has only played the one game. Time to throw him in and see what he can do at the level just like with RCD.

VFL Tigers shine in big win over Lions

By Brenton Mann
Richmond Media
22 May 2021

Richmond VFL enjoyed its time in the Sunshine state this weekend, as a scorching nine-goal opening term set up a commanding 62-point win on the road, the final score reading 21.16 (142) to 12.8 (80).

The Tigers were hosted by Brisbane at the Gabba, with the aim of securing their third win of the 2021 season.

In a shoot-out under the sun, Richmond’s towering big men in Callum Coleman-Jones, Samson Ryan and Mabior Chol combined for 11 goals and played a large hand in the win.

Local boy, Ryan enjoyed his homecoming as he moved freely inside-50 and was aided by pure delivery from his teammates up the field, finishing with four majors.

The emerging big man marked crisply and kicked sweetly, bagging three goals in the opening quarter and helped his side open up a substantial 36-point quarter-time lead.

Coleman-Jones has been arguably the in-form big man of the competition so far, and that was further enhanced by his performance on Saturday.

He enjoyed the free-flowing nature of Richmond’s ball movement, jagging two goals in the first quarter and as he marked the ball with purpose.

He led and marked with strength and power, emitting an aura of a player that is growing increasingly aware of the impact he has on his team’s fortunes.

Chol sprung back to his best, literally, splitting his time between ruck and forward, snagging three goals.

The ruck/forward is dominant when he’s lethal both at ground level and in the air, and he displayed that from the first bounce to the last.

He also chalked up a goal against his name in the first quarter, as the trio bagged six of the nine first-quarter goals between them.

The Tigers’ pressure was irrepressible, and they were equally as efficacious inside 50 with their conversion, kicking 9.1 in the first and looking like scoring every time they surged forward of centre.

It wasn’t just the talls who impressed, with midfielders the likes of Josh Caddy, Thomson Dow, Brad Melville and Bailey Henderson scorching across the pristine Gabba turf.

Caddy and Dow picked up where they left off last week, gathering possessions at will and releasing their teammates into attacking positions.

Sydney Stack and Maurice Rioli provided the heat and spark at ground level inside 50, stalking the ball and man with ferocity and flair.

Rioli set up Stack’s first-quarter goal after gathering the ball between a trio of Lions, brushing them off, handballing to Stack who shimmied and shook off any would-be tacklers and snapped the goal on his left.

Scoring was not a prolific in the second quarter as the first, however, the game was still on Richmond’s terms for the majority, as it forced turnovers at will and kept speed on the game.

Coleman-Jones was a beacon again up forward, levelling his goal tally with Ryan’s at three.

Rioli added a goal to his name in the second quarter after a strong aerial contest by Stack, and follow up and handball under pressure by Ryan, released Rioli, who goaled from close range.

Another hometown boy, Noah Cumberland, added to his highlight reel in the second term, after collecting the ball at speed from a forward-50 stoppage, fending off an opponent and snapping a goal on his left.

Cumberland is dynamic, tough, and vivacious with his attack on the ball and man. He looks to be another cub who is building into the year.

The Tigers kicked three-goals-to-one in the second term, stretching their lead to 52 points at the main break.

Caddy rose to further prominence in the third quarter, jagging back-to-back goals as Richmond pushed further clear of the Lions with a five-goal quarter.

Chol and Ryan also added to their goal tallies, the latter with four to his name.

In a high-transition game, Richmond’s zealous runners came to the fore.

Brad Melville carved out his own track on the Gabba turf, constantly providing a link between the arcs as he distributed the ball with effortless poise.

Derek Eggmolesse-Smtih patrolled the back half with ease and urgency, winning the ball back for the Tigers and then picking through Brisbane’s defensive structure with his slicing left boot.

Eggmolesse-Smith was another who ran his heart out from wire-to-wire, and will again push his claim for a recall to AFL level.

Bigoa Nyuon built on his impressive game last week against GWS with another resolute display down back.

Nyuon’s understanding of his role is growing as the weeks tick by, as he thwarts opposition thrusts and then punches back intent, be it spoiling or intercepting in the air.

Richmond will have to manage a five-day turnaround, as it heads down to Skybus Stadium to face Frankston under lights on Thursday, May 27.

RICH 9.1  12.7  17.9   21.16 (142)

RICH: Coleman-Jones (4), Ryan (4), Chol (3), Caddy (2), McDonagh (2), Hicks (1), Stack (1), Bartlett (1), Rioli, (1), Olden (1), Cumberland (1)

Richmond VFL playing coach, Steve Morris' summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in last Saturday's Round 6 win over Brisbane:

Josh Caddy (38 disposals, two goals, eight marks, six inside-50s)

"Another dominant display from Josh on the weekend. Was a strong presence, found plenty of the footy when in the middle of the ground and hit the scoreboard again."

William Martyn (30 disposals, nine tackles, six inside-50s)

"Will was sensational on the inside again on the weekend. He was a real presence around the footy. We are really pleased with what he continues to bring from a contested point of view, and his pressure was excellent as highlighted by his nine tackles."

Ben Miller (24 disposals, six rebound-50s, five marks)

"'Funky' was good again on the weekend. His closing speed was on show on numerous occasions when caught out of position on turnover. His one-on-one work continues to be a strength and he is playing with great confidence."

Thomson Dow (23 disposals, five clearances, four inside-50s)

"Sensational to see Thompson continue his great form from last week. Once again, his lateral movement around the contest and his ability to use the ball by hand in traffic was great to watch."

Derek Eggmolesse-Smith (23 disposals, four inside-50s, three tackles)

"'Eggy' was again solid down back. He used the footy well and he looks switched on defensively at the moment."

Mabior Chol (22 disposals, seven marks, seven clearances, three goals)

"Maintained his good form in his home state. He took strong contested marks, followed up well in the ruck and hit the scoreboard again. Most importantly, his attitude has been absolutely first-class and he led the team well on Saturday."

Callum Coleman-Jones (21 disposals, four goals, 11 marks)

"'CJ' is playing at a level above at the moment. He continues to focus on what he can control and is banging the door down for senior selection. His hands were again sensational on the weekend and if it weren’t for some missed opportunities in front of the big sticks, he would have finished with an even bigger bag."

Noah Cumberland (17 disposals, six marks, one goal)

"Back in his home state, Noah was solid after a week off last week. He hit the contest hard and kicked a terrific goal. It’s great to see him back playing and now the focus will be on gaining a better understanding of the different role he may be required to play."

Bigoa Nyuon (17 disposals, eight marks)

"'Biggy' played well on the weekend. He positioned himself well behind the footy and was able to get involved in our attack as a result. Looking for 'Biggy' to continue to develop his physicality and start to dominate his opponents down back, as he has the makings of a really good defender."

Maurice Rioli Jnr (14 disposals, one goal, seven tackles)

"Maurice was lively again. His defensive pressure is just incredible and he probably should have finished with a couple of goals."

Sydney Stack (13 disposals, one goal, four marks)

"Sydney was good on the weekend. Probably not quite as busy as he’s been over the past couple of weeks, but he was a whisker away from getting out the back on a number of occasions. He’s building a great base and really investing in the team which has been good to see."

Samson Ryan (12 disposals, four goals, six marks)

"Great to see the big fella get rewarded on the weekend in his home state. His hands were very good and he made the most of his opportunities in front of the big sticks."
