This is a big topic for us. Gibcus, hold enormous currency for our list and next build. He's the only first round pick on our list in the last 4 drafts 23, 22, 21, 20).

Brown was first round (17) in the same draft.

But yeah, it would be a real blow if Gibcus's career ended or was significantly affected by this injury. But sometimes things just happen that way, look at Pat McCartin or Matthew Egan. Shyte happens sometimes, and it isn't necessarily anyone's fault, it's just terrible luck.

Putting the blame on S & C staff for an injury like this is infantile to say the least.

GIBCUS SHINES AT TIGER TRAINING

The Richmond fans peering through the fence from Punt Rd on Friday morning were in for a welcome sight with youngster Josh Gibcus powering through a strong running session.

The Tigers defender spent a week in Qatar last month in a bid to solve his ongoing hamstring problems, an injury that ruled him out of the entire 2023 season.

But Gibcus appeared to be running at full speed on Friday, charging through some sprint work away from the main group of mostly first to four year Tigers.

Gibcus worked on some leading patterns as a forward and had no problems pushing off into a sprint on hook leads and marking at speed.

He also joined in some early drills.

Richmond sees the young tall as a budding star defender and he showed strong signs of that trajectory across 18 games in his debut year in 2022.

Richmond young gun Josh Gibcus is on track to make a return early next year after enduring an injury-hit 2023 campaign.

Gibcus didn't appear once this year due to a complicated hamstring injury that initially required surgery to repair the tendon in January, before multiple wound infections, muscular atrophy and damage to the nerve supply ended his season in July.

The 2021 No.9 pick travelled to Qatar last month to spend a week at world-renowned sports medicine practice Aspetar in a bid to find some answers, after the complex injury left the Tigers' high-performance department and specialists around the world stumped.

Gibcus started pre-season training with the club's first-to-fourth-year players a fortnight ago and will follow a modified program this side of Christmas.

Speaking to the media for the first time since being unveiled as Richmond's new senior coach, Adem Yze preached patience with the 20-year-old key defender, but there is growing confidence Gibcus will be ready to resume his career early next season.

"He is tracking really nice. Up until Christmas we need to be really careful with this kid. He has had a tough time with it. It would have been a really frustrating year for him. We need to be mindful that we can't rush this," Yze told reporters at Punt Road on Wednesday.

"Right now, he wants to get involved in everything, and he probably can, but we're just going to temper that, just get him to Christmas and set a nice base for him, so when he comes in he doesn't have any setbacks.

"He is a terrific talent for us. We can't wait to see him out there. he is really close to joining full training – he will do a little bit more today – but we will get him to Christmas."

From The Age:

Yze said Gibcus was close to resuming full training, but the club needed to hold him back before Christmas.

“He is tracking really nicely. We hope that he progresses really strongly and, up until Christmas, we have to be really careful. He has had a tough time of it, it would have been a frustrating year for him last year, so we have got to be mindful that we can’t rush this,” Yze said.

“He wants to get involved in everything, and he probably can, we are just going to temper that and get him to Christmas and really set a nice base for him. So when he comes in, he doesn’t have any setbacks, and he can move forward because he is a terrific talent, and we can’t wait to see him out there.”

Yze said the specialists in Doha had helped Gibcus with] his running technique.

“He has, obviously, had a history with the hamstring, but it was more about the mechanics, the way he runs, the way he picks the ball up. So, [it was] just trying to look at the finer details about how we can get him back into the program, and we are starting to see the benefits of that. So, like I said, he is really close to joining full training,” Yze said.

PLAYERS RETURNING FROM INJURY WHO COULD BE LIKE A NEW RECRUIT IN 2024

Andrew Slevison
SEN

Josh Gibcus (Richmond)

Josh Gibcus is one Tiger who barely played last year and will be crucial to the side’s development under Adem Yze.

The youngster was so impressive in his debut season in 2022, winning the club’s Best First Year Player award for his efforts, primarily in defence.

The former no.9 draft pick missed all of 2023 with a hamstring injury and ensuing complications surrounding the initial issue. It prompted the club to send him to Qatar for specialist treatment.

Yze said this week that the club won’t rush Gibcus in his bid to return, before ramping things up in the New Year.

That will be music to the ears of Richmond supporters who would love to see the talented 20-year-old back in the thick of the action in 2024.

Josh Gibcus joined the defenders for line drills as he pushes to return to senior football after a complex hamstring injury derailed his entire 2023 season.

Broad called the 20-year-old a “freak” as he began to ramp up his training amid great caution from Richmond.

“He’s a freak, Gibby, he’s tall, he’s quick, he’s fit. He’s probably ready to go at the moment, but just with the past history and where he’s been at, we don’t want to push it,” he said.

“He came and joined in a couple of back(line) things today and the boys got around him … he’s going to be a great player for the future.”

Gibcus 'on the up' following successful trip to Qatar

After a testing year of injury, emerging Richmond defender Josh Gibcus is tracking well as he looks towards his return in 2024.

It's been a testing year of injury, but things are "on the up" for emerging Richmond defender Josh Gibcus as he eyes his return in 2024.

The 20-year-old spent a successful week in the Middle East in October, undergoing intensive rehabilitation at Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital.

Gibcus travelled with Tigers physiotherapist Anthony Schache to visit the world leading sports medicine practice in Doha, where they worked with specialist Dr Enda King.

A complex hamstring issue derailed Gibcus’ second season in the league, after an initial tendon injury in January, which required surgery, was followed by further complications that eventually ruled him out for the year.

Relieved to now have the injury under control, Gibcus said the trip was an eye-opening experience.

"It was a hard-hitting, high-intensity stretch of strength work. Putting me in positions that aren't really comfortable for a hamstring and applying weight to it, but also improving muscles that are also around the hamstring to help it with some overload as well," he said.

"(It was) obviously a frustrating year last year. It was a struggle (for me)... But, hopefully now it's all fixed and (I'm) ready for next year.

"I do appreciate what the Club did for me going above and beyond. Taking me to the facility that we went to, which was state of the art. A lot of top athletes around the world go there to do their rehab and pre-season training."

Gibcus said he returned back to Melbourne with valuable insights that would propel both him and the Club forward.

"I got a lot out of it and Schache did as well," he said.

"It was very different over there, it was a fun and exciting journey that we went on to help me and the Club.

"Dr Enda King was unreal... He actually took me out for a round of golf while I was over there, he was an unbelievable bloke.

"It's very fast-moving over there, it was a good experience."

Gibcus, Richmond's No. 9 pick from the 2021 NAB AFL Draft, said he was likely to resume full training in the coming weeks.

"It's a bit of a relief that I've been in certain situations where I'm putting my leg in uncomfortable situations and being okay," he said.

"That's how in my head I know we're going well and are on track."

While "having a year off your favourite thing to do is tough", it's given Gibcus an appreciation for what's ahead.

"It makes me hungry... I've missed it, I'm excited for next year," he said.

"My first year, playing a handful of games, I got to learn how quick the speed of the ball was, how other teams like to play, and just overall getting a feel for what the game was like.

"My second year, I was able to watch a lot more footy from above, just to have a look at what they're doing on the field. So, there was learning still.

"(In 2024) I want to keep chipping away at what I want to get better at and then improving what I'm already good at. That's what I want to keep my focus on."

As the team wraps up their first pre-season training phase ahead of the Christmas break, Gibcus said the "vibe has been very good" at Tigerland.

"Camp (in Iverloch) was really fun, except for the 10-kilometre run, 20-kilometre bike ride and beach sprints," he joked.

"It was a lot of fun to have that connection and get to know our new coaches a bit more. I think it's been very positive for all the boys and coaching staff.

"Coming in with the first to fourth years, we tried to set the bar where we wanted it to be at. And when the older boys came in, they met it and I think we're going very well right now.

"(Adem) Yze has been very good, he's demanded a lot of us but he's also encouraged us to become better, not just as AFL players but as people.

“I think the new coaches and players have adjusted to our way of football very easily and have been quick to learn about who we are and what we want to achieve."

Josh Gibcus is as crucial as any Tiger in the Richmond reset.
18 games in his debut year, none in 2023.
He’s headed abroad to change his running style and put an end to hamstring troubles.
Now eyeing a date against his old coach in the opening round.
