Before he gets on the park, can the Serpell critics please advise if he's had enough time on the sidelines? Are we rushing it or playing it too cautious?

If he gets injured he rushed him, if he doesn’t he held him back too long….

Reminds me of my ex wife. Can't win!

Richmond defender Josh Gibcus will return

Tyler Lewis

July 4, 2025

Richmond defender Josh Gibcus will pull on the jumper for the first time in nearly 500 days when he returns to action through the VFL.

Gibcus has had a difficult 18 months after sustaining an ACL rupture in the Tigers’ second game of 2024.

Prior to that injury, the promising key back had a series of hamstring troubles which he sought treatment for overseas.

He will make his long-awaited return this weekend in Richmond’s reserves against Geelong on Sunday.

“Yeah he’s (Gibcus) playing some VFL footy which is awesome, he’s been chomping at the bit for the last few weeks,” Richmond coach Adem Yze said.

“He’s finally got that opportunity, a big smile comes on my face when you say his name and I can’t wait.

“They obviously play the next day so there will be a heap of staff staying down to be there and support him through it.

“We can’t wait to see him out there.”

Jayden Short will accompany Gibcus in returning from injury and, according to Yze, will play 70 to 80 per cent game time before being available next week.

Does anyone know how much game time Gibcus had on the weekend?

It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”

NWM would have to be in the conversation for best player in the game? Players taken before him come under the microscope.

As much as I like gibbo

Luckless Tiger to make long-awaited return after horror run of injuries

Josh Gibcus plays his first game since round one last year when Richmond faces Geelong

RICHMOND key defender Josh Gibcus will play his first AFL game in 527 days against Geelong at the MCG on Saturday.

The 2021 pick No.9 has endured a nightmare run since producing a brilliant debut season in 2022, managing only two senior appearances since then due to long-term injuries.

After returning in the VFL at the start of last month and gradually building his game time and form across six games in the reserves, Adem Yze has picked Gibcus for the final game of 2025.

The 22-year-old hasn't played since rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in round one last year in just his second game after missing all of 2023 due to a complex hamstring injury.

Richmond has been ultra-conservative with the Ballarat product, who suffered a couple of setbacks in his recovery from the knee reconstruction and didn't play for 15 months.

Gibcus required secondary knee surgery last year and didn't run at all for nine months until January this year.

The Greater Western Victoria Rebels product has visited renowned sports medicine practice Aspetar in each of the past two off-seasons, working with Irish performance rehab specialist Enda King in Doha to help his recovery.

With Nick Vlastuin ruled out for the final game of the season after fracturing his ankle against North Melbourne, Gibcus will replace him down back against the Cats.

Gibcus was Richmond's first top 10 pick since the club selected Vlastuin at No.9 in 2012 and has been viewed as a crucial component of the Tigers' long-term plans since he arrived at Punt Road.

Those players are the future of Richmond. Now Gibcus gets the chance to head to an off-season with the benefit of returning at AFL level.

IF ...
it's fantastic that Josh Gibcus will get to play an AFL game for the first time in 527 days ...

THEN ...
it's also sobering for him that it's against Geelong, which is again on a potential Grand Final path. Gibcus has had so much go wrong with his body since a 2022 debut. Hope this is the start of him becoming the topline player he was always meant to be.

  • From Foxsports:[/i]

Injury-prone young defender Josh Gibcus got through his first match in almost 18 months, and while clearly disappointed to be subbed out in the third term, he showed good signs in the minutes he managed.

The talented top 10 pick from the 2021 Draft has endured a horror injury run so far in his career.

But on Saturday at the MCG, he played his first game since Round 1, 2024 before being subbed in the third term.

“He wants to be out here. But they’ve got to look after him,” AFL great Jason Dunstall said.

“For me, if you don’t play him... he goes another six months without playing. And it becomes an even longer period that you’re stressing, all through pre-season. He’s going ‘I haven’t played a game for three years’.

“Nice to have it under your belt and then go back to pre-season and work again.”

Vision from the bench showed Richmond coach Adem Yze sitting alongside Gibcus and comforting him as he pulled on his training top.

“Great to see the senior coach sit beside him and just check in with him,” Brownlow Medallist Nathan Buckley said.

I wasn't in favour of playing him but Dunny makes a good point.

Subbing him is neither here nor there.
