VFL Tigers blast past Cats with final-term blitz

After trailing by 27 points at three-quarter time, Richmond VFL stormed home with an eight-goal final term to defeat Geelong on Sunday afternoon at GMHBA Stadium.

"Bring the same music as last week."

That was the directive Richmond VFL senior coach, Steve Morris, implored to his chargers as the Tigers made the trek down the highway to face Geelong on Sunday.

On a day where momentum swung like a pendulum, Richmond saved its best tune for the final set, raising the tempo to fever pitch with an eight-goal final that clinched a barnstorming 14-point win.

Trailing by 27 points at the final change, Richmond delivered last quarter performance bursting with heart and fire, the final score reading 16.7 (103) to 13.11 (89).

The Tigers overran the locals, a performance that was capped off with a debut goal to savour by Mate Colina.

Geelong burst out of the blocks with three goals in as many minutes. The Tigers sensed the urgency and went to work on getting the game played in the manner they wanted.

Richmond ratcheted up the heat, injected speed on the ball and utilised the one-on-one contests forward of centre.

Sydney Stack led the way in this regard, as the constant drizzle formed a layer of mist over the venue, Stack’s cleanliness and creativity led to Richmond's initial two goals.

Stack classily snapped the Tigers’ opening goal and then had a direct hand in skipper, Lachlan Street’s first goal.

The dynamism of Richmond’s forwards worried the Cats at ground level, with Noah Cumberland, Jason Castagna, Jake Aarts and Stack forever dangerous.

Cumberland slotted a major after the quarter-time siren, which pegged back the margin to a manageable 15 points at the first change.

Swiftly after the restart, Richmond surged the ball forward, with Stack soccering the ball into the waiting arms of Castagna.

The triple-premiership forward converted, then goaled shortly after, slicing the margin to just three points.

Geelong edged clear by 15 points as the half-time siren sounded on the back of a couple of defensive lapses by Richmond.

Coming out of the main break, the Cats jumped the Tigers with a clump of three quick goals once again, pushing the margin out to 31 points.

Senior Tiger Jake Aarts rose to prominence, bobbing up for two of the next four goals, with the Cats matching Aarts’ goals to hold a 33-point lead.

Bigoa Nyuon was swung forward after copping a heavy knock to the back and hip in the third term and had an instant impact.

The territory may have been foreign for Nyuon, but he slotted a vital goal after the three-quarter time siren to keep the Tigers in touch.

Nyuon found space inside 50 but was nearly in the construction site at the northern end of the ground when he snuck through beautiful set-shot goal, reducing the margin to 27 points.

The Tigers re-energized at the last break, blitzing the Cats from the opening bounce of the final term.

Castagna was the fire starter, nailing his third goal, injecting hope into the budding Tigers around him.

Cumberland produced arguably his best performance in the Yellow and Black, with a match-winning three goals in the final term to help guide Richmond to its win.

The third-year forward’s goal had Richmond bubbling, then did Mate Colina after snapping his first goal at the level.

With the ball bobbling around, 213cm Colina collected the ball at ground level and swung it onto his right boot. As the goal umpire arched his back, the big man was consumed by Yellow and Black.

Cumberland’s third goal got Richmond within three points, then Nathan Oakes read the flight of the ball superbly, marking unopposed 15 metres out.

Importantly, Oakes kicked the go-ahead goal as Richmond’s belief started to swell.

Cumberland’s fourth pushed the lead to 10 points, before Matthew Parker snapped his first as the lead grew to 16 points.

The Cats pegged one back, but then Jacob Bauer put the icing on the cake with a classy goal on the run.

GEEL 5.4 7.7 12.9 13.11 (89)

RICH 3.1 5.5 8.6 16.7 (103)

Goal Kickers:

Richmond: Cumberland (4), Castagna (3), Aarts (2), Bauer, Colina, Stack, Oakes, Nyuon, Parker, Street

Re-watched the last quarter, a joy to watch :clapping
So much to like about the comeback, mainly due to contested and tough footy. Cumberland is slowly winning me over as he doesn't play selfish anymore- learning the Richmond Man way it seems. Stack was fantastic as was Mansell. In fact, Mansell as the lockdown small defender should be the norm moving forward. Big Ryan will be very good :shh

Richmond VFL coach Steve Morris provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in Sunday's 14-point comeback win over Geelong at GMHBA Stadium.

Jake Aarts (23 disposals, six marks, six clearances, two goals)

"Hard, tough, uncompromising game from him. He led us for contested possessions, took his opportunities in front of goal, and was really desperate when it counted. Fantastic effort from him."

Tyler Sonsie (22 disposals, six marks, three clearances)

"Tyler was solid. We'd like him to engage slightly more at stoppage, as he is at his best when he's in the contest and winning contested ball. But it was a decent game from him."

Sam Banks (20 disposals, five inside-50s, four marks)

"I thought it was a fantastic opportunity for Sam to get some midfield minutes. We saw that in the first half he was able to break lines and run and carry from inside, as well as what we've seen on the outside from him. He certainly was a contributor in the second half on the wing."

Riley Collier-Dawkins (19 disposals, five tackles, four clearances)

"Felt like it was an 'almost' game from Riley. He could have been cleaner with the footy and around stoppage, albeit on a tough day. He's close to breaking a game apart but we really want to see that from him in the coming weeks."

Rhyan Mansell (17 disposals, seven marks, five tackles)

"Stood up when it really counted. He had half a dozen crucial contests in the last quarter to thwart the opposition. He stood under high balls, he won contested balls at ground level, and I thought it was a fantastic game from him."

Will Martyn (17 disposals, five rebound-50s, four marks)

"Will was solid on the day. He's been in great form over the last couple of months and he was a solid contributor in a back six that really stood up on the day. He reduced the Cats' impact despite them having quite a lot of inside-50s."

Sydney Stack (16 disposals, six inside-50s, eight tackles, four marks, one goal)

"His game impact was quite high. We always feel as though Sydney plays his best footy when he's really engaged defensively, and eight tackles certainly highlights that fact. A great game from him."

Noah Cumberland (15 disposals, three marks, four goals)

"He's a really difficult match-up Noah, and he kicked the footy as well as I've seen him kick it all year. He took his opportunities, won contests in front of the footy, and he's in great form. He stood up when it really counted in the last quarter."

Ben Miller (14 disposals, 10 rebound-50s, three marks)

"Ben, like most of our backline, was quite solid without standing out on the day. He made sure Geelong's key forwards didn't have a huge impact on the game."

Jason Castagna (13 disposals, nine tackles, four inside-50s, three goals)

"I thought he was fantastic. He importantly took his opportunities in front of goal, but when we needed hard, tough footy in the last quarter he stepped in with a team-high nine tackles, and played his role really well."

Thomson Dow (13 disposals, six tackles, five marks)

"He had a solid game. There were some really pleasing aspects of his work-rate at times to outnumber and help out our backs, but I thought our mids got outworked at other times. So, the challenge for him is to improve that consistency moving forward."

Tom Brown (10 disposals, four marks, three rebound-50s)

"It's fantastic to see Tom start to take the game on. And anyone that watches him play would notice how clean he is. The challenge for him is to become more and more involved each week in our offence, and I think his aerial prowess is something that will continue to grow."

Samson Ryan (10 disposals, 34 hit-outs five tackles, four clearances)

"A really solid game from Samson. He had seven free kicks for and zero against, which was pleasing as it's something our rucks have been working on. To have 34 hit-outs and 11 contested possessions is pretty critical for a young ruckman, and he took a couple of good marks in behind the football."

Matt Parker (10 disposals, four tackles, one goal)

"Like a couple of our other wings, his work-rate was outstanding and at times wasn't rewarded. Time and time again, he was down in our back half helping out and getting forward as well. He was rewarded on the scoreboard in the last quarter."

Jacob Bauer (eight disposals, four inside-50s, one goal)

"Eight possessions and one goal certainly does not reflect his impact on the game. He was one of the standout key forwards on the ground. Whether he was 2v1 or 3v1, he continuously fought to bring the ball to ground. He played a really smart game and was crucial in keeping the ball in our forward half."

Bigoa Nyuon (seven disposals, five marks, one goal)

"We talk about taking our moments fairly often, and he certainly did that before three-quarter time. He was pretty sore after a big collision down back and he swung forward and was able to hit the scoreboard up there."

Mate Colina (five disposals, one goal)

"The goal of the day came from the big 213cm ruckman. It was fantastic to see him finish off that way and see his teammates really celebrate his first goal at VFL level for the club. He's an exciting player who continues to improve and is a much-loved Tiger."
