Quirky stat:

First time in 26 years we've kicked 20 goals twice against the same opponent in the one season.

AFL Report Card: Round 16

Ben Waterworth, David Zita and Catherine Healey
Foxsports
4 July 2022

RICHMOND

The Tigers stamped their finals credentials with a big win over West Coast. The victory was soured by injury to star Dustin Martin, but the club says it was just precautionary to sub him out of the contest. The Tigers finished down on inside 50s -4, -6 in clearances and -19 in contested possessions but still managed to punish the Eagles by kicking 20 goals.

In the votes

Marlion Pickett had a day out for the Tigers, finishing with 25 touches, two goals, eight intercepts and two big contested marks. Dustin Martin was back to his brilliant best in the first half before his hamstring tightness saw his day ending in the third quarter. Martin had 17 disposals and a trademark goal from stoppage inside forward 50. Dan Rioli had one of his best games in recent memory, with 28 touches, three clearances and a goal.

Room for improvement

Liam Baker was well-held for three quarters before getting off the chain late. The out-of-contract Baker had just one touch to quarter time. Ivan Soldo could only manage five disposals, one mark and nine hit-outs playing as the back up ruck and failed to hit the scoreboard.

Grade

B+

From this side
Balta comes in to replace Soldo
Prestia comes in for Graham and
Sonsie (debut) in for Castagna

Not dropping Graham off one average game dude seriously haha.

Soldo and George out for Balta and Prestia.

Dusty out maybe Cotchin in I dunno.
LOL average has been pretty much the norm for Graham. To think people are expecting him to be one of the blokes to take over the mantle from Dusty Cotch and Prestia.

Why are people not asking the question of why we lost clearances so badly again or contested ball for that matter. also got beaten for inside 50's on the back of losing in those areas.Makes you wonder if they had say Kennedy and Allen available to take advantage of that dominance.

This game probably more than any shows the need for mids to come into the club. We are still okay if healthy but sheesh we get beaten up in these areras.

Has anyone stopped to ask just how good a side we could be if we were dominant in these areas.

Take out Prestia ,Cotchin , Martin and Lambert out same calibre of players from any club you think same outcomes won't happen bit of perspective mate no mention of that we all know our midfield needs to lift  and we need fresh blood , but you can cover so much troops out to.

Think your 100% missing what im saying here and have been all along.Yes we are fine and more than competetive with the oldies fit but sheesh we get belted in some critical areas when even one or  even two are not there and it has been the case for years.
People here just refuse to admit when it comes to the Grahams and Ross's that they are not going to fill the void.
They won't fill the void because they are or more to the point have been average at best.

We got away with it against a side who have had absolutely no continuity and deplorable injury losses. Last time i looked we are more healthy than most. yep we are missing a few mids but fmd when just a few are not there we get belted up in those key areas.
We have had ages to work on this in fact we have had since the end of 2016 to ensure the situation we are now in did not happen.

The point really should be that when you win a premiership you get last pick within each round  of the draft. These players are not the best in the competition as a rule and are likely role players.
The majority of Our best players were top 1 12 picks and to get those picks in the first place means we didnt win a lot of games for 30 something years.

We lose clearances because generally we choose to play a spare behind the ball (thus we are outnumbered at stoppage) and score from the ensuing turnover. If we break even or win clearances (which isn't that often) its generally because the oppo either even up our spare or use their spare behind the ball. Its been a problem for ages because that is our game profile - we are a score from turnover side, not a score from clearance side. It's very difficult to be both a score from stoppage side and a score from turnover side.

Jack, Dusty, Nick V, Cotch, Meatball, Lynch. Rioli

Vrs

Grimesy, Balta, Rance, Nank, Baker, Bolton, Broad, Graham, Shed.

Very nice pair of lists,

I do agree we have a better chance with better picks but if the recruiters did their job properly we could have a better chance this year. We should have added midfield depth,  with cheaper talent not getting games elsewhere. I have a feeling we are going to fall hard if we don’t address our gaps asap.
