We should have drafted Lohmann instead of Brown.  Kid looks like he is going to be the next Toby Greene.

Surprised we didn't.  We were well into him.  Going to be a very good player
Francis “Betamax” Jackson didn’t get to watch his highlights video in time but according to sources Browns highlights package was top shelf with plenty of star swipes, a split screen and an excellent fade to black at the very end.  :clapping  :rollin

“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Dow was great today and our best mid followed by Aarts. Think we have found a player in Bauer. Stacks bump was a thing of beauty and he was solid enough. Brown is a concern for mine. Tylar Young gets better each week. I would rookie him next year for sure.

Tend to agree , Brown and Clarke have dropped off as the season gets to the end. RCD seemed down today, he must be getting disheartened.

VFL Tigers overrun by Brisbane in final term

By Brenton Mann
Richmond Media
1 August 2022

Richmond VFL has become accustomed to battling trying weather conditions over the past month of football, and the wintery squall that greeted the Tigers and Lions was no exception.

Both sides laid claim to the lead in the opening three quarters until Brisbane clinically edged clear, flying home with the wind with four goals to nil in the final term.

The Lions clinched an important 25-point win, the final score reading, 12.12 (84) to 8.11 (59).

It took over 13 minutes for a goal to be scored in the opening term, with Brisbane booting the opener.

Both sides pride themselves on their ability in the contest and the ball didn’t venture into open space too often in the first quarter with the pressure peaking at nearly every contest.

The Lions broke clear soon after with two goals as Richmond struggled to find a key target forward of the ball.

The near gale force wind made judging the flight of the ball a tricky proposition, although Tom Brown judged it to near perfection, sliding and clinging to a chest mark close to goal.

Brown was the beneficiary of a floating squaring ball by Jacob Bauer, who kept it alive on the half-forward flank, leading to the Tigers’ and Brown’s first goal of the game.

The goal was against the flow, with Richmond capitalising on a shift in momentum late in the opening term with Bigoa Nyuon benefiting from playing in front as a scrubby kick found its way onto his chest.

Nyuon eased through the goal on the breeze, handing the Tigers a slender one-point lead heading into quarter-time.

Bauer stood tall early in the second term, dragging down a strong mark in front of some desperate Lions’ defenders and importantly kicked the goal, handing the Tigers a seven-point buffer.

Unfortunately for Richmond, Brisbane went on a four-goal tear, as it surged forward at will and used the northerly jet stream to full advantage.

The Tigers were in need of an igniter, and as he’s done numerous times throughout his career, Jason Castagna provided the spark.

Jake Aarts, Riley Collier-Dawkins and Thomson Dow started to gain ascendency around the ball and Bauer once again put the team first inside 50, centring the ball where Castagna crumbed and goaled.

The goal was timely and transferred the momentum back in Richmond’s favour. Castagna goaled again swiftly after his first, smothering then soccering through his second.

Richmond dragged back the deficit to one goal as the half-time siren echoed around Punt Road Oval.

The Lions burst out of the blocks against the wind, slotting the first goal of the second half and pushing their lead out to two goals.

Nyuon kept the Tigers within striking distance after slotting his second, however Brisbane hit back briskly.

The Tigers, as they did in the first quarter, captured the lead late in the term and went into the final break with their confidence rising.

The impetus for the back-to-back goals could be traced back to a trademark Sydney Stack bone-jarring hip-and-shoulder that floored an unsuspecting Lion and led to a mini Richmond resurgence.

Skipper, Lachlan Street battled and scrapped against a trio of Brisbane defenders inside 50, holding the fort until the cavalry arrived, which eventually led to Street chipping through a goal and injecting hope into the Tigers.

Bauer found himself in the right place at the right time once again as he was handed the ball following a down-field free after Hugo Ralphsmith was bumped after he pumped the ball inside 50.

The rangy Tiger kicked truly, edging his side clear by a point at three-quarter time.

Richmond’s rally didn’t carry into the last quarter, as Brisbane iced the game with the only four goals of the term.

The highlight of the final term for the Tigers was Aarts’ 80-metre dogged goal-saving run to make a lunging spoil, stopping a near certain Brisbane goal.

The Tigers continually tried to inject speed into the game and run the ball into the wind but struggled to convert their chances into pressure on the scoreboard.

Went along to watch a double header, and what a great day it turned out to be. My likes yesterday:
Dow was the best mid for us on the day. Just needs to be a little cleaner and become a one grab player. His kicks also needs work. He gets plenty of the ball and hard ball which is a good sign.
Aarts was his tenacious self- never gives up.
Ralphsmith ran all day and provided good speed on the day. Looks great with the ball.
Bauer will be a fine forward as he gets into the right positions and is aggressive in the air.
Mansell played his usual strong defensive game and never gives in. Would play him in the ones every week.
Stack was solid enough however was cut off on a few occasions by George. He would make space and or leads only to see George cut in and stuff it up!

I worry about Brown and his ability to be physically competitive. Time will tell but would like him to learn how to be aggressive as he currently has nothing in this area.
Gibcus looks so much better playing in the ones just saying.

Richmond VFL coach Steve Morris provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in Sunday's match against Brisbane at the Swinburne Centre.

Thomson Dow

"Found a lot of the footy and won a lot of ball for us in-and-under. If he can gain a little bit more from his possessions then he'll be a really valuable contributor over the coming weeks."

Jake Arts

"Standout player for us on the day. He won the ball, his tackle pressure was outstanding and he got the ball going our way with 11 clearances."

Riley Collier-Dawkins

"Whilst it wasn't a terrible day by his standards, he's been in a lot better form than he showed on the weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing him bounce back next weekend."

Jason Castagna

"I thought he had a really good game. His pressure around the footy was great, he got plenty of opportunities in front of goal and was able to hit the scoreboard for us."

Hugo Ralphsmith

"His first half was a bit average but he certainly bounced back with a much-improved second half. He really backed himself in the air, won some important contests, and his speed really stood out."

Tom Brown

"When he's got the footy in his hands, he makes really good decisions and uses the ball well. He's got really clean hands but it's probably his off-ball stuff that we want to see improve slightly. He's only new to the wing role and he has a really good understanding of that already, which highlights his coachability."

Will Martyn

"He was solid on the day. It certainly wasn't his best game, our backs as a whole were a little bit off on the weekend, but I'm looking forward to seeing them bounce back as a unit next weekend."

Jacob Bauer

"Competed really well in the air for us. A lot of the day he was outnumbered, but he brought the ball to ground and also hit the scoreboard for us."

Sydney Stack

"Struggled to have his usual impact on the game. It was a difficult day with the windy conditions, but he is certainly capable of more than what we saw on the weekend."

Ivan Soldo

"He was really important for us in the first three quarters. He came off at quarter-time in readiness to step up at AFL level if needed, but his absence really hurt us. He gave our mids first use all day and I was really impressed with his pressure around the ball also."

Josh Gibcus

"I thought he looked a class above the level last week and he probably didn't play to that same standard this week. He's had some really good moments in aerial contests but I think we can get more value from his possessions with the ball in hand."

Sam Banks

"Didn't have the impact that we're used to seeing him have, we didn't notice his run and carry off half-back as much as we have over previous weeks. But, he's only new to the role and he's having a really good season."

Rhyan Mansell

"Didn't have his best game on the day. In contests he was really solid but probably allowed his opponents a little too much leg rope on the day. He's capable of more and I'm certain we'll see a big spike in his performance next week."

Bigoa Nyuon

"I thought he showed some things up forward. His contest work was a little bit inconsistent but I think it's a matter of him getting used to reading the play forward of the footy and understanding what patterns to run. He definitely does things that other players aren't capable of doing, and he was a great target for us up forward on a difficult day for key forwards."

Mate Colina

"He's very new to the game, so it's almost a matter of two steps forward, one step back for him at times, as his game knowledge is something that will continue to improve over the journey. But you can't question his work-rate and he's a really good runner for someone of his size and he's a good competitor for us, we're just going to have to be a little bit patient in his development."

Judson Clarke

"Didn't have the impact that he usually would, but it was pleasing to see him still back himself with his speed late in the last quarter and we know that's what he does when he's playing his best footy."
