Surely Rioli plays on Cameron and not Baker?

Your club's one-wood: The KPIs each finalist excels in

BRISBANE V RICHMOND, ELIMINATION FINAL

Brisbane
The Lions rank No.2 across three of the KPIs identified by Champion Data, but don't lead the competition in any. Their ability to transition the ball from defence to attack is a major strength, turning rebound 50s to inside 50s at a rate of 27.7 per cent. Once the ball is locked in their forward half, they are better than most at scoring from a stoppage, accruing 19.4 points a game from that source. Accuracy has been a concern for some players in the past, but as a team the Lions rank second for shot at goal accuracy (52.5 per cent).

Richmond
The Tigers are a force once the opposition turns the ball over. This is due to both their attacking mindset when they win possession and their ability to force turnovers in dangerous positions. They rank No.2 for forward-half intercepts (25.6), making it easier to score from that source, and No.2 for scores from turnover differential (+17.8 ). Their style and talent in the forward half allows them to score at a high rate per forward entry, hitting the scoreboard from 45.9 per cent of their inside 50s (No.3 in the AFL).

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan says captain Dayne Zorko should be ready for Richmond to come after him physically in Thursday night's elimination final at the Gabba.

Fagan said it was "Richmond's call" whether it went after Zorko verbally, but said his skipper should be ready for some physicality.

Entering his fourth straight finals campaign, Fagan said he's tired of talking about the club's one-and-five record under his watch.

"They're not stupid, the players, they know the record, but to be honest I'm sort of sick of it," he said.

Brisbane v Richmond - Elimination Final Preview

Hugh Fitzpatrick
SEN
31 August 2022

Brisbane and Richmond will kick off the 2022 finals on Thursday night at the Gabba.

The Tigers boast an unbelievable record over the Lions, winning 17 of the past 19 matches, making them the justified favourites.

Despite Richmond's record, the last four games between the two have been even, sharing a 2-2 record with the Lions, claiming both those wins at the Gabba.

Brisbane’s forward line poses a legitimate threat to the Tigers.

Joe Daniher, Eric Hipwood and Dan McStay will stretch the defence of Robbie Tarrant, Noah Balta and Nathan Broad. If the Lions trio can get on top, Damien Hardwick will start worrying.

As for the Tigers, they head into the finals in good form, winning their last four games by an average of 43 points.

They also welcome back the best finals player to ever play the game in Dustin Martin. If Dusty gets rolling, we know what happens.

Adding more spice to this clash, we can’t wait to see Zac Bailey and Shai Bolton light it up on the big stage. These two are made for finals and will be instrumental if their sides are to get the job done.

These two teams know each other inside out, they have met in two Qualifying Finals since 2019, both at the Gabba, with each side winning one.

This one takes place at the Gabba, which you think would give Brisbane an edge.

Tip: Brisbane by 24 points.

Elim Final preview: Will Dusty be rusty? Are the Lions for real? (Age)

Will Dusty be rusty? Are the Lions for real?

Jon Pierik
The Age
September 1, 2022

Tom Lynch, Joe Daniher and, dare we say, Dustin Martin loom large in Thursday night’s elimination final, but can the Lions overcome their poor finals record?

Jon Pierik looks at the key questions.

Are the Lions for real?
That’s the big question heading into September. They appeared set for a top-four finish but slipped to sixth, having leaked too many goals over the final month of the season. Team defence, as coach Chris Fagan conceded, has been an issue. The absence of Marcus Adams (concussion) is a major blow, leaving Harris Andrews as the key man in defence. Their 1-5 win-loss record through the finals over the past three years reeks of a team lacking in belief when the stakes are at their greatest. Two defeats to Melbourne and a stinging loss to the Tigers in round 20, the latter having coughed up a 42-point lead, means this clash shapes as much as a psychological battle as it is physical against a side that has been there and done that - on three occasions.

Is home ground an advantage for the Lions?
It should be but the “Gabbatoir” has been anything but in recent finals. The Lions have lost four times at home under Fagan, in part because of their inaccuracy in front of goal. This offsets the win they had over the Tigers in the 2020 qualifying final. However, the Lions have lost only twice in 11 games there this season, and won nine of their last 10 there last year. It’s now time to get the job done when it matters the most.

Will Dusty be rusty?
Perhaps, but it’s not a major concern. It’s been more than nine weeks since Martin played his last game, the man regarded as the best finals performer, perhaps of all time, hampered by a hamstring strain. There had been a setback or two in his recovery but he has lifted his intensity over the past fortnight, and has trained strongly. Even if Dusty is not quite match fit, any defender - Brandon Starcevich is likely to spend time on him - will be nervous when he lines up inside attacking 50. The three-time Norm Smith medallist only needs to have 15 or so touches to have a major impact, and if left one-out it could take only one goal from him to turn the contest.

Can the Lions stop Lynch?
Having recovered from an adductor issue, Lynch is the man who could tear this game apart. He has been a man on a mission over the past month, booting 21 goals in four games (including four against the Lions in round 20) since returning from a hamstring strain. Harris Andrews is likely to get the job on him but, even if he is quiet, the Tigers have weapons aplenty. Noah Cumberland booted five goals when the teams last met, and there’s Jack Riewoldt and Shai Bolton. And here comes Dusty. It’s an imposing forward line - the Lions will be under pressure.

Can Joe take a stand?
While the Tigers have a deep forward line, and are the league’s No.1 scoring side, the Lions are No.2 for scoring. Matthew Lloyd has put some heat on Daniher to take a stand. He has 36 goals this season, behind small forward Charlie Cameron (47), but had a finals campaign to forget last year, managing only one major in a straight-sets exit. He had only six touches in the semi-final loss to the Western Bulldogs, far from good enough for a high-priced, recruit. It’s now time for the former Bomber to deliver.

What the coaches say

Chris Fagan:
“I look at the Richmond team that we play and remember back when ‘Dimma’ [Damien Hardwick] got them into three elimination finals in a row and they couldn’t actually win and then they missed the finals completely then came out and won the premiership the year after that. I’m a bit of a historian on the game, and I look at teams and their progression towards hopefully winning premierships, and usually there’s a few disappointments along the way, and I feel like we’ve had those in the last three years.”

Damien Hardwick:
“He [Dustin Martin] will play predominantly forward. We know he’s played that role before and he’s quite capable. Against Brisbane he’s had some really good games like that. What we do know is that players of Dustin’s ilk put themselves where they need to be.”

Odds
Richmond: $1.72
Brisbane: $2.15
Source: Pointsbet

Verdict
Richmond by eight points.

Fox Footy’s Leigh Montagna and David King preview where the matches will be won and lost this weekend.

BRISBANE V RICHMOND ........ (6th v 7th, Thursday night, Gabba)

The Lions and Tigers will clash in an elimination final that pits the two top scoring teams of the competition against each other.

But Montagna warns the match won’t be the shootout many are predicting.

“The talk about this game being a shootout doesn’t stack up. In the last five finals series, only one game has had two teams kick 80 points or more,” he said.

Statistics show both Brisbane and Richmond are struggling defensively, with the Lions ranked 11th in opposition defensive 50 to inside 50 and the Tigers in 12th.

Opposition scores per entry sees Brisbane in 12th and Richmond 13th.

“Both those numbers are really poor for both those teams playing in finals,” Montagna lamented.

“We know these two teams can score on offence, but who is going to stand up defensively in a final?

“That’s where the game is going to be won and lost.

“It’s the team that can knuckle down defensively and stop a team scoring on turnover that will win the game.

“The only way I think Brisbane can really get a hold of Richmond is really dominate clearance.”

When the two teams last met, the Tigers managed to score at over 60 per cent when they went inside 50 in the second half.

King said the Lions were struggling to stop opposition scores – and it was an ongoing issue.

“Their whole back six are struggling. In their defensive 50 they are 18th in the competition over the last six weeks at winning a contest,” he said.

“Richmond right now will take control in their forward 50 against Brisbane’s D50 - absolutely no doubt.”
