I thought Elle McKenzie was our great hope.  A great kick but kicks it to the opposition almost every time.

Yea very disappointing. She’s better than that.

Not sure what her role was but at times I thought she was quite selfish

Richmond fell to Geelong in the final minute in Sunday's season opener at GMHBA Stadium, going down by four points.

Cats forward-turned-defender Claudia Gunjaca took two strong intercept marks in the last minutes as Richmond attempted to clear the ball, before Georgie Prespakis was the beneficiary of a downfield free kick, which she duly converted from about 35m.

Geelong had booted eight goals in its practice match win over Gold Coast, with Richmond piling on eight itself against Hawthorn, but scoring was few and far between in the 2.3 (15) to 1.5 (11) result.

The Tigers had their opportunities to build a sizeable lead in the second term, but booted four straight behinds from set shots, two from Courtney Wakefield, one from Sarah Hosking and a fourth from Emelia Yassir.

Tireless Geelong midfielder Amy McDonald picked up where she left off last season, recording 10 disposals in the first quarter, but did not have another till the opening minute of the third term. She finished with 24 and seven clearances.

Unsurprisingly, the Cats dominated play in the premiership quarter off the back of McDonald's work in the centre and skipper Meg McDonald patrolling the backline.

Usual forward Chloe Scheer had started the second half in the middle, and it seemed to unlock something for the Cats, with Prespakis delivering a low bouncing goal for the Cats' first.

But both teams will want to work on their entries inside 50 after struggling to deliver the ball cleanly in the face of two strong defences.

The Tigers have found one

Richmond only took one 18-year-old in the recent NAB AFLW Draft, instead looking for older players to strengthen particular areas on their list. Height and rebound out of defence were both issues, and 29-year-old Eilish Sheerin appears to have filled both needs. Recruited from AFL Sydney club Inner West Magpies, Sheerin looked totally unfazed in her AFLW debut, playing with dash and dare in her 19 disposals and a whopping 16 intercepts.

"It was a tough one. One team was going to feel ordinary out of tonight, a tight tussle like that. I was actually quite pleased with our last quarter, I thought we were really strong and started to get some more territory and own the game a bit more. They did really well to fight back and keep the game alive, in the end, it was a 50-50 sort of moment. Probably the third quarter was where we lost it rather than the last," – Richmond coach Ryan Ferguson

Ferguson also said with so many new players we'll get better week by week as the season goes along once we jell better as a team.

Brennan is a maybe for next week. Ferguson said he can't say for 100% she will play. Early in the week she was going play today but it (her foot) got worse as the week went along so she didn't play.

Umm...No we lost it in the 2nd by not nailing 3 of the easiest set shots you will ever get

I'm glad the coach was "quite pleased" because it was a diabolical performance and I just feel embarrassed

Finally,  it is a 10 week season, not 17 weeks. So TBBH you don't have time for things to "jell"  .

Would recommend not listening to the presser. I was starting to calm down then listened to it and I'm peeved again

Have said it a few times now. We have a bloody soft draw. We cannot afford to drop games to teams that are around the same mark as us. That's what we did today.

Geelong is an average side. Today they wanted it more at crucial times. Yes the final decision was a shocker but we should not have been in that position.

Chucks actually right. Liverpool scored 3 times as many goals in 90 minutes last game then this entire AFLW match.

It’s a disappointing result but I saw some real positive signs. Hopefully some of the other girls can contribute more often.

I’d like to have seen more from Dempsey, D’Arcy and Lavey.

Wakefield was disappointing and no one else was offering an option up forward. Our smalls completely unsighted except for Williams who at least looked like she was trying to get involved by tackling and harassing. New girl Cox I didn’t notice at all.

I’m not sure why we continue to persist with Molan I’m not sure what they see in her to be honest.
Poor decision maker, slow and fumbly and cannot execute correctly by hand or foot.
I’d rather see Jacques play ahead of her.

I know she’s very young but Stella Reid (pick 5) is starting to make Molan look ok. Not a great sign. Poppy Kelly isn’t much chop, besides her height I’m not sure what they saw in her to be honest.

Play the girls that want the ball and maybe get them fitter so they’ll work for each other when they haven’t got the ball.

Good signs from Seymour, Conti, Miller, Hosking, Egan looks pretty good and Sheerin was BOG.

Not all bad news and I’d expect huge improvements next game from McKenzie, Lavey, Dempsey, D’arcy, and Wakefield.
