SOUTH FREMANTLE
MIDFIELDER, SMALL DEFENDER
#5
Steely Green

Height: 179cm

Weight: 74kg

D.O.B: 09-01-2004

Leagues: WAFL League

SNAPSHOT: “A tough inside midfielder who thrives at the contest, Steely Green has emerged as a bolter in this year’s draft crop having produced some excellent form for South Fremantle at senior level.”

A player with one of the best names in the draft class, South Fremantle’s Steely Green has put together some outstanding form as a midfielder at senior level to put his name in the frame as a draft prospect.

Having produced modest numbers for the Bulldogs at Colts level in his bottom-age year, Green wouldn’t have been on the radar of too many clubs but he did a power of work over the preseason to be a surprise selection in a strong South Fremantle League side for Round 1.

From there, he never looked back, averaging over 18 disposals and four tackles to produce the best form of any Western Australian prospect at League level for the season.

A small but tenacious midfielder, Green translated that form into state colours, where he formed part of the leadership group for Western Australia and captained them to their only win of the carnival against South Australia.

#55 Richmond: Steely Green:

A 179cm (Richmond like them) small ball winning midfielder who works hard and importantly for Richmond has good agility and covers a lot of ground to fit with Taranto/Hopper.

Green lands at Tigerland

Richmond has used its second selection (No. 55 overall) in the 2022 national draft to recruit South Fremantle midfielder/small defender Steely Green.

Recruited from: South Fremantle
Position: Midfielder/small defender
Height: 179cm
Weight: 74kg
DOB: 09/01/2004

What the Richmond recruiters say about Green...

"Steely is a product of the South Fremantle Football Club, playing 11 WAFL Colts games in 2021. After a strong pre-season, he made his league debut for South in Round 1 against Subiaco, gathering 25 disposals in a strong display.

"A member of the WA U18 Nationals team, he played four games and then he went on to play eight league games for South Fremantle. Another highlight of his year was his Round 20 league performance against Perth, where he gathered 31 disposals, 11 of which were contested, to go with seven tackles and eight inside-50s.

"He impressed at the National Combine, clocking 6:17 for the kilometre time trial and registered an elite 8.25 agility run.

"We like his fierceness at the contest, tackle pressure and competitiveness. He is super clean inside and then can get to the outside very fast. Steely wins his own football and brings others into the game, displaying the versatility to multiple roles in our system."

Steely top 5 in agility and top ten in endurance. He’s undersized but Richmond’s MO is to value competitiveness rather than height. The philosophy is clear: draft talent not need.

How a freak, near-death experience turned sailor Steely Green into an AFL draft prospect

This bizarre story of a lightning quick WA footballer - who was struck by lightning - is so incredible it seems unbelievable.

Steely Green is lightning quick, was struck by lightning, and is an electrician ... oh, and he’s named after 70s ‘yacht rock’ band Steely Dan, his mother’s favourite.

But that’s not all he has to thank his mum for after a pair of rubber boots she bought him ended up saving his life.

The South Fremantle AFL draft prospect’s first sporting love was sailing, until he was struck by lightning when he was on his boat near the South Perth Yacht Club a few years ago.

The weather turned and he went in to dock the yacht, placing his hand on the mast.

“(Lightning) hit the top of the mast and came through me and pushed me off the boat,” Green told 7NEWS.

“Mum was actually in the clubhouse having a nice wine and a lady who was looking on came into the club and literally yelled out, ‘Your son’s been struck by lightning’.”

The brand new rubber boots were only a week old and Green said ‘the rubber in them stopped the lightning pushing through my body so I was pretty lucky that I was wearing all this protective gear.”

He revealed he would normally race barefoot.

Following the accident, Steely needed a break from the boat and sought out a new hobby, heading down to the local footy club, Brookton Pingelly.

“When they kicked a goal they all celebrated, got around each other, which I thought was everything.”

He didn’t know the rules of footy but got involved, and three years later he was playing in the WAFL with South Fremantle.

“I love getting knocked around, I love tackling, I love the contested side of footy, I think it’s everything,” he said.

Green finished in the top bracket of the 2km time trial and the agility test at the recent AFL draft combine, and is tipped to be picked in this month’s AFL draft.

Ironically, the accident also led him to an apprenticeship as a sparky saying, ‘I’ll always question why I wanted to be a an electrician.”

Green also revealed he had never played a Steely Dan song.

Steely resolve: Green ready for AFL journey

Steely Green has more than just a great name.

The 18-year-old South Fremantle midfielder looms as a likely draft prospect later this month, having featured at senior level in eight games this season on top of his state under 18’s commitments.

Originally from Brookton in the state’s southeast, Green averaged 18 disposals at league level, playing in the club’s finals clash with Peel in September to further enhance his claims to AFL recruiters.

Having not been on the recruiting radar 12 months ago, Green has emerged as a draft bolter, added to the under 18’s squad early in the year after his performances at league level, recording 25 disposals against Subiaco on league debut in round one.

“I think I was heading down to the beach when Todd Curley rang me,” Green told Sports Breakfast.

“I was getting ready for the Colts game; he told me a spot had opened up and they thought I was ready for the opportunity. I just sat there in awe and couldn’t believe it. It was amazing.”

Green went on to feature in the under 18’s carnival for Western Australia, averaging 14 disposals, 4 marks, 2 tackles, 2 clearances and 3 inside 50’s, mixing his time between a midfielder and forward.

Green described himself as an inside midfielder who enjoyed the physical side of the game.

“I definitely like the rougher side of footy. I love getting my hands dirty and pushing in and under. The idea of hitting bodies is what I love the most.”

Green, who stands at 178 cm compared his football to that of dual Richmond premiership player Liam Baker, capable of playing different roles.

A keen sailor in his younger years, Green was struck by lightning in a freak accident while onboard a ship in 2017, spared death thanks to the rubber on his clothing and shoes.

“One day I finished off a race and managed to find my way in, as I just docked up the boat I had my hand on the mast which was in the sky and got pulsated off the boat,” he said.

“I had rubber boots on which saved me.”

Having fully recovered within a few weeks, Green has now parked his sailing dream, setting his sights on an AFL venture instead.

“It would mean the world to me to get drafted,” he said.

“I’ve got to wait until someone reads my name out. That’s when the work will really start. I’ll just wait and see.”

A small midfielder who has been one of the surprise packets of the year with his immediate impact at senior level for South Fremantle, where he averaged 19 disposals (eight contested) and four tackles in eight WAFL matches. He brought his zest and competitive mindset for Western Australia at the National Championships, where he averaged 15 disposals. A composed character with good vision and speed, he also makes excellent decisions with ball in hand. His elite agility was displayed at the Draft Combine, with his 8.24 seconds on the agility test the fourth-best time, while his 6.17 in the 2km time trial was seventh best.
