Tigers eye AFL's best winning streak in Dreamtime clash

By Sarah Black

17 May 2023

RICHMOND is a chance to claim outright ownership of the AFL's longest current winning streak against a single club when it faces Essendon on Saturday night.

The Tigers have won a whopping 13 games in a row against the Bombers, dating back to round 20, 2014, with an average victory margin of 29.3 points.

It's by far Richmond's longest current winning streak against any rival, with the next best being three straight victories over West Coast.

Yartapuulti [Port Adelaide] is also currently riding a 13-game winning streak against Gold Coast, the Power having never been beaten by the Suns since the initial match between the pair in 2011, which was the expansion club's first-ever win.

The Suns feature four times in the list of the biggest current losing streaks, having also struggled to beat Narrm, Brisbane and St Kilda.

The Power will next face the Suns in round 17.

The AFL's biggest current winning streaks

           Club                 Opponent

13    Yartapuulti           Gold Coast

13    Richmond             Essendon

11    Narrm                 Gold Coast

10    Geelong            North Melbourne

8      Brisbane            Gold Coast

8     Essendon           North Melbourne

8     St Kilda               Gold Coast

The all-time VFL/AFL record for consecutive wins against one club is the 29 times in a row Collingwood beat Hawthorn between 1925 and 1941.

The last time the Bombers saluted against the Tigers was round 11, 2014 – a Dreamtime at the 'G match – where Brendon Goddard won the Yiooken Award in the 50-point triumph.

Dustin Fletcher, Paul Chapman, Paddy Ryder, Ivan Maric and Nathan Foley were some of the players to feature in that game at the MCG.

Richmond champion Dustin Martin is the only player to have won multiple Yiooken Awards, named player of the match in both 2016 and his Brownlow year of 2017.

He's a typically strong performer against the Bombers, averaging 26.2 disposals (his third highest against a club) and 1.3 goals (fifth), the only club to feature in both of Martin's top five for touches and majors.

Shane Edwards was the first Indigenous player to win the award, with Shai Bolton following up in 2020 at TIO Stadium, Darwin.

The Dreamtime game was also played at Optus Stadium the next year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but has been at the MCG every other season.

From AAP:

Essendon players are expected to line up for a crack at taming Richmond's Dustin Martin as the Bombers attempt to beat the Tigers for the first time since 2014.

Defender Jake Kelly had loomed as one option on Martin when he swings forward but remains sidelined with concussion.

Scott was adamant Essendon's losing streak against Richmond wouldn't add any extra pressure.

"The easy answer for me is that was a long time ago, all those things, but the reality is Essendon fans want to beat Richmond and we're going to be doing everything we can to make sure that happens Saturday night," he said.

"No-one likes those sort of streaks against you and we'll be doing everything we can to arrest that."

Scott believed there wasn't anything beyond Richmond's quality that had contributed to the streak and noted Essendon had challenged them in some games.

"Richmond winning three flags through that period is a big part of it. They're just a good team," he said.

"If you go back, I've gone back through a few of those games, then you realise very quickly how irrelevant it is when you look at some of the personnel who are playing in those games - very different teams.

"I probably wasted a fair bit of time looking at it because I thought I'd find some sort of common themes, but there aren't too many that I can see other than Richmond keep winning."

Scott believed Richmond had returned to their ominous best as recruits like Tim Taranto settled.

"When there's changes in personnel, sometimes the system can look a little bit clunky, but they looked back to their best last week," he said.

"The positive about that is we're very clear about what that looks like.

"Countering it is another story altogether."

Essendon v Richmond Preview

Andrew Slevison
SEN
19 May 2023

Dreamtime at the ‘G is here for another year.

The annual Essendon v Richmond clash in Sir Doug Nicholls Round is a joyous event and a great under-lights spectacle, celebrating Indigenous players and their respective cultures.

The Bombers enter the 2023 edition on the back of a four-game losing streak, the latest being a 42-point defeat to Brisbane at the Gabba last weekend.

Brad Scott’s side has improved this year and appears a little sturdier in defence than they have been in recent years. That backline welcomes Jordan Ridley in after he missed the Lions loss with concussion, however, Jake Kelly remains sidelined with the same ailment.

There is a gaping hole or two in the middle with Darcy Parish (calf) out and now Will Setterfield (fractured foot) cast aside, which places extra pressure on captain Zach Merrett and Dylan Shiel.

They have to navigate a Tigers outfit that has found form in the past fortnight with wins over lowly West Coast and reigning premier Geelong.

Last week’s 24-point triumph over the Cats was impressive with their renowned manic pressure and rapid ball movement back in vogue, led by veterans Dustin Martin (19 disposals and four goals), Trent Cotchin (three goals) and Tim Taranto (28 disposals, 12 tackles)

Their midfield will lose Taranto's fellow recruit Jacob Hopper (calf) though.

Damien Hardwick’s Tigers have dominated the Dons in recent times, winning 13 in a row in a streak that dates back to 2014. Eight of those wins have been in Dreamtime games with an average winning margin of 30 points.

Richmond will also honour two milestone men - Nick Vlaustin (200 games) and Shai Bolton (100 games) - which bodes well as they have a decent record in milestone matches which includes Dion Prestia’s 200th last week.

Given Essendon’s personnel issues in the middle and with the Tigers seemingly purring again, the nod must be with the sash of the yellow and black persuasion to continue their winning run in this fixture.

Tip: Richmond by 18 points.

Round 10 Blowtorch: Essendon vs Richmond

David Zita, Ben Cotton, Jono Baruch and Max Laughton
Fox Sports
May 19th, 2023

Tigers’ burning question: Are they really back?

The Tigers channelled their simple minds last week with a rousing rendition of ‘Don’t you forget about me’ as they took down the reigning premiers. Despite still sitting in 13th position on the ladder, Richmond started showing signs of the Tigers of old against the reigning premiers with their breakneck style, accuracy and system in the face of a significant injury list still. With the opposition (Essendon) themselves battling injuries, Dreamtime at the ‘G looms as a tricky game but another one for the Tigers, if at their best, to send another message that they can cause some damage in the second half of the season as they start getting their stars back.

Bombers’ burning question: Who is going to take the midfield minutes suddenly on offer?

The Bombers are battling through an injury crisis with several important holes to fill across the park. With their tall stocks heavily depleted, the midfield absentees will be causing Brad Scott some headaches. Darcy Parish was ruled out last week for an extended period and now new recruit Will Setterfield’s foot injury will see him make way until after Essendon's bye. There are opportunities there to be taken but who will fill the minutes? With a string of winnable games on the horizon starting with the Tigers and then coming up against the Eagles, Roos and Blues, the opportunities are there to learn more about the capabilities of the list and expose some young players to the coalface. The recently re-signed Ben Hobbs is a prime example.

THE TEAMS UNDER THE MOST PRESSURE HEADING INTO ROUND 10

Dwayne Russell
SEN
19 May 2023

2 - Richmond

“Richmond’s still kind of in elimination final mode.

“We don’t know if Richmond is back or not. They’re not fully back, they’re not fully the old Richmond, but they might be.

“It’s a big test.

“Essendon have got to stop this losing streak at some stage. They’ve lost four in a row.

“But I’ve got Richmond at number two.”

How so? Both teams are in the bottom 8. I’m sure there’s been multiple dreamtime games where both teams were top8 at the time.

It’s normally how far the tigers going to win - this time, feels like a sliding doors moment potentially for both teams - or we just strong arm them again.
I have a feeling might be the moment Bombers announce they are overtaking us in the comp
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Probably a bit of a grand final game for Bombers. Big feature game, season sorta on the line for both teams, big winning streak they'll want to wipe.

Hope we beat them silly and crush their hopes.

The big difference for me at least with this Dreamtime game is Brad Scott is coaching the Bombers this time round.

Historically we don't have a great records when he's coached against us.

Huge game on some many levels IMHO

THE CERTAINTIES FOR ROUND 10

Andrew Slevison
SEN
20 May 2023

Essendon versus Richmond

Vlastuin and Bolton to combine for 30+ disposals, 6+ marks and 1+ goal

Nick Vlastuin plays his 200th game on Saturday night.

The three-time premiership defender has had a solid season, averaging 18 disposals and 5.6 marks.

Shai Bolton plays his 100th game on Saturday night.

The electric forward/midfielder has found form of late and now averages 20 touches, 3.4 marks and 1.2 goals per game this season.

Richmond’s milestone men should combine for at least 30 disposals and six marks, while we’ll throw in at least one goal (thanks Shai).

Merrett to have 25+ disposals and 4+ clearances

Zach Merrett has a fairly decent record against the Tigers.

In his last five against them he has picked up 37, 33, 32, 34 and 30 touches (including a total of 30 clearances at 6 per game) while averaging 27.15 over 13 games career-wise.

In 2023, he is averaging 27.2 touches and 4.4 clearances, and with Darcy Parish and Will Setterfield out of the side, the Bombers are going to rely on him to deliver.

Against the Tigers on Saturday night, Merrett should be ticking off at least 25 disposals while adding four or more clearances to this stats sheet.

Oddly, if we win tonight I think we will end the round 2 points outside the 8.
