Hope the standard new coach in the chair mid season means a win holds true this week

Tigers’ burning question: How do they perform post-Dimma?

Richmond has been the talk of the competition this week given Damien Hardwick’s shock decision to depart, leaving Andrew McQualter as the side’s caretaker coach. It’s already a hard enough game against a side on a seven-match winning run in the Power, not to mention the upheaval the Tigers have to contend with now. McQualter has been a rock-solid lieutenant to Hardwick and will have the side’s game plan memorised inside and out, but what tweaks he makes will be fascinating to watch. That’s not to mention the emotional side of things. Do the Tigers play ‘for’ Hardwick this week to try and honour his legacy in a week of celebration for him, or will the emotional toll prove a hindrance rather than a boost? Sunday is a must-watch for so many reasons.

Power’s burning question: Will they continue to roll the dice through the middle?

The Power are “bucking the trend” of other top eight contenders by opting to bypass the boundary route, and instead going corridor at every opportunity. Statistics show Port are ranked 16th for boundary use so far this season - the next closest is Collingwood ranked eighth in the competition. Teams ranked 1-6 for using the boundary fill out the rest of the top eight. “Everything they are doing is more aggressive,” Fox Footy’s Leigh Montagna said. “I love how aggressive they are being this year. It’s allowing them to back their defenders in. Number one team coming through the corridor. They’ve been able to open up the opposition and it’s a real weapon that they’ve gone with. It’s different to what most other teams are doing. It’s reaping rewards for them.”

Port coach Hinkley wary of Richmond's post-Hardwick era

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley is warning his players to expect the unexpected as Richmond begin life after Damien Hardwick.

Hardwick's resignation from the club he coached since 2010 stunned Hinkley and the wider AFL world.

"He has been an absolute great of the game," Hinkley said.

"He's premiership coach at a great football club and you have to be nothing but shocked."

The Tigers, struggling in 14th spot ahead of hosting the red-hot Power at the MCG on Sunday, appointed Andrew McQualter as interim coach.

The caretaker coach said while Hardwick's resignation was deeply felt by players, they had rapidly refocused to their task.

"It actually wasn't much of a challenge at all ... the players have been unbelievable with their energy this week," McQualter said.

"It's pretty clear that we've still got belief in the way we play.

"The group has been outstanding. The leaders have been outstanding and it hasn't been up to us to drive much of that energy to be honest."

Hinkley was an assistant coach at Gold Coast when McQualter played for the Suns.

And while Hinkley doesn't expect McQualter to change too much at the Tigers, he admits some unease ahead of the MCG encounter.

"Richmond are quite familiar with the people who they've got in charge," he said.

"I would imagine they'll follow a pretty similar programming and a similar game style but there may be some tweaks.

"We talked about that with the playing group. There's some unknowns, we'll never quite know what those unknowns are until we start the game.

"So we have just got to be ready to bring our best and hopefully our best will be good enough."

Port's best has been good enough to down seven opponents in a row, lifting the Power to third spot at the start of the round.

But Hinkley again will be without his key attacking tandem of Charlie Dixon (thigh) and Todd Marshall (concussion), forcing him to be creative with his forward line-up.

The certainties for Round 11

Andrew Slevison
SEN
27 May 2023

Richmond versus Port Adelaide

Rioli to have 21+ disposals, 350+ metres gained

Daniel Rioli is putting together another consistent campaign across half-back.

In 10 outings in 2023, he is yet to drop below 20 disposals and averages 23.9 touches as well as 455 metres gained.

He is a constant in providing drive out of defence for the Tigers and that shouldn’t change under interim coach Andrew McQualter.

We’re banking on Rioli to pick up at least 20 disposals and provide at least 350 metres gained aganst the Power on Sunday.

Butters to have 25+ disposals, 7+ combined inside 50s/clearances

Zak Butters is in some sort of form.

In his last seven outings, the 22-year-old has amassed 212 disposals at an average of 30. (His season average is 26.9 across 10 games).

Last week against Melbourne he was extraordinary with 41 touches, 10 clearances and eight inside 50s (plus two goals).

In seven career games against Richmond he has only averaged 17 touches per game, but in his most recent outing against the Tigers (Round 21 last year) he finished with 28 touches.

With the current form he’s in, we’re confident Butters will collect at least 25 touches.

He also averages 5.1 inside 50s and 4.2 clearances across the season, so we’ll throw in a combined total of 7 or more inside 50s and/or clearances.
